you mean platformers, like Rockman, Contra and Bionic Commando? if that's the case, nope, it's pretty much a dead genre on pc nowadays.

nah i mean like games that come out on 360 and ps3. like saints row 2, dead space, farcry 2. people would rather pirate it then go out and buy it. if u dont release games on pc its a lot harder to pirate a game to play on a console. i shouldve said console games not platform games, sorry.

I dont get this logic, if 1 million copies sell, and 3 million copies are pirated, they still make the money from the 1 million sold, and didnt arguably "lose" any money from the pirated copies.

i hope you're not here to troll....but in any case, you're quite mistaken. piracy is prevalent across all platforms, not just pc.

I agree... but the main reason is because some genre doesn't suit in console, especially FPS and RTS... So it's a big mistake if developer release such game on console but didn't release it on PC...

how am i trolling???

anyway. well then how come all these gaming companies are complaining that piracy is causing them to lose money? if they are losing money to piracy of pc games why not just stop releasing games on the pc and stick to the consoles. dont get me wrong, im not a console fanboy, i enjoy pc games a lot more than console, but im just curious as to why they would risk losing money by making a pc version of a game that will sell just fine if it was only released as a console game.

I find it hard to believe that you enjoy pc games more than console when you try to discuss how it would be better for the developers not to release their games on the pc.

Yea it's simple, they still make money. The game has already been made, it can't take that much more effort and money to make a pc playable version. Even if more people pirate it than buy it, they can still turn a profit. Maybe not as much as they would like, but if they're still making money, they'd rather have it than not. If all these multi-platform games were really losing money on their pc versions, then yes I'm sure they'd cease to continue doing so.

There are and will always be a great number of people who, if presented with the option to buy a PC versus console game, would choose PC. And someone who pirates a game wouldn't have bought it anyway, so the company is really getting free advertising. Before I get spammed, think about it. Have you done that? Okay. Let's not forget that PC games are a lot cheaper as well, and don't require licensing fees -and can be distributed online for much less overhead.

As for the other comment, if someone pirates something they more than likely weren't going to buy it in the first place. People who pirate probably started because they had no money, so how could they afford these games anyway?

there is talk all over the internet that sait row has already been pirated for the xbox360. By the way every gaming machines has been pirated. lastly you cannot compare pc gaming to console gaming. Pc gaming is light years a head. Pc gaming has created all genres!

why do you console players have a hard time with that! lastly it has been consoles that has been taken from pc not the other way around.

they will not make more money only if what they get from PC sales is actually less than porting cost. now, those big corporates, if they do continue to port games to PC, it means that they're making money, only less than what they made from the console ones.

also, I'd Loooove to see corporates agree with you: stop porting games to PC, and may those *why XXX not on PC* threads rest in peace, and no console trespassers here on PC forum anymore.

Console games are released on PC to milk them for every penny. That should be obvious. The publisher has probably already recouped the development costs and made profits on the console sales - and its not rocket science to transfer a Xbox360 game to the PC with little modification, particularly if they are using a multiplatform game engine. So for a little more investment, they can make more money by dishing up sloppy seconds on the PC, and the piracy doesn't really matter if they can shift another million units.

can't remember the link but last quater, EA's biggest money maker was the PS3, followed by the PC. The PC made more money for EA than the 360.

Also have a look at amazon and it the PC version of Far cry2 thats selling more. Look at amazon.de and in germany PC games sell a lot more.

Piracy in some cases can in fact be beneficial. You must see the situation in terms of the network effect. The value of a product will increase if other people are also using the product, given that it produces a positive externality. For example, if your friends have a particular game, you may also want to buy due to some multiplayer aspect. Although those people that do not have these 'connections' that some people and can't 'acquire' these games will buy them retail, not a big % of people, but enough. Losses aren't great because these products are easily produced after the first copy has been made and after research and development. The research and development of the first copy can be considered as their fixed costs, whilst variable costs are next to none; cd's, dvd's. Most of these companies attempt to restrict piracy, but not completely. Piracy has it's benefits if controlled to an extent. The network effect in games is huge in today's industry.
