Why do games not have that big global chat thing anymore like they used too? I rember when I first started playing games they would have chat rooms for everyone then you moved off into a room to play. Then they started up those multiplayer gameing sites like mplayer, gamespy, and the msn zone. Still all of those had chat rooms. But now its so rare in the games I come across to find any. Its not that I want to chat so much but I do miss the back and forth, and how you would learn peoples names and make friends or start clans so easy because there was that little chat thing. Now everything seems to have a very impersonal matchmakeing system, throw you in a game, never learn who your playing with, and then back out again to repeat. I miss the good old days.

I agree with you, this matchmaking system sucks, i mean it does help find games quicker but chat rooms where awesome. YOu really got to know who u were playing against and the community. The newer games which dont even have a server browser (like left 4 dead) really sucks. Matchmaking is good and all, but sometimes i wanna play on spefic server, or find match ups with good people through a chat room.

i still remember the chat rooms in the half life games lol. Not extremely sad to see them go. I remember that one game really pushed in game communities - Tribes 2. It had a web page for yourself and a clan, chat rooms, private messaging. The implementation was pretty good. but in the end it received some negative press because basically did what other community websites were doing so it made one redundant. There are still games that have regional chat, I think they are Crysis, Red Alert 3, Diablo 2 just to name a few.

I haven't found a matchmaking server that is any good. I know what could tell betetr what server is right for me: ME. I know better than any software what server I will enjoy. It is the same as checkpoint save systems: I know better than some programmer when I want to save.

Probably when game makers noticed that those chat rooms were usualy nothing but fighting, racial slurs and little kids running their mouths. I for one am gladto see them gone.

In that case why doesn't Microsoft drop voice support for the 360, same thing happens. Plus they could of kept the server browser and not gone to matchmaking systems while still dropping the chat rooms.

I agree. The ability to communicate with each other is often abused by younger kids who enjoy using words that they shouldn't be using.

You have never ever played Counter-Strike. You want a tactical 5v5? Hell no, you have to scroll down past the 16v16 servers that have no less than 50 .wav files that you must download in order to join. There is this one service owned by some league with a name that I forgot where it had something like a 5v5 matchmaking service. The main problem is you have to pay though. A matchmaking service is PERFECT. I don't want to play some 16v16 no skilled spray-till-you-die game on CoD4 or C-S, I want to play a game that doesn't have a ridiculous amount of people with a ridiculous amount of .wav files. When I borrowed my friends 360 to play Halo 3 for a month, I was initially taken aback by the lack of a server browser. Gradually though, I found it an amazing alternative to the server browser. I could play custom games with my friends and I don't even have to mess with no ports or whatnot. Depending on what I felt like, I just chose the right gametype and start playing, no stupid large downloads, and no kiddie 16v16 where little kids can gloat because they can finally get a cheap kill. I might know better than any software what server I will enjoy, but I sure as hell can't find the server as fast as the software. And by the way, the checkpoint save system is there not for your convenience, but so that the game is more challenging and enjoyable. You might now better than some programmer when you want to save, but the programmer doesn't give a damn.

i agree with you that match making that has made its way into pc gaming sux and i hate it in forced onto my rts. But left 4 dead is an exception i was apprehensive at first by the unusual system but i got used to it and giving the nature of the game i find it works really well for that type of game with different campaigns separated by difficulties and 5 maps on each campign. and starting a campaign or versus game is easier with the match making. now for every other rts and fps keep match making away and don't force it on us if u want to keep it as an options that's ok but don't make it the only way to play.
