I'm a long time PC gamer and never go into StarCraft when it was released but try playing it now from my point of view and it's just dated. The game is a pretty standard rush type RTS with little tactics at all and just for me it doesn't offer alot compared to other RTS these days like COH. The graphics and UI and everything are really clunky and not very nice to use and it seems pretty unstable with newer machines too.

I just find myself saying ok where are the numbers playing this game because there doesn't seem to be that much. Just seems like most people just claim it to be the best over Nostalgia or because they think it makes them look cool or something :S I dunno.

Anyways i just wasted money on this game to be like...... "meh theres much better out today in terms of gameplay".

You lost credibility when you said SC's UI is really clunky.

I just started getting serious into Starcraft: Brood War because I want to be up to date when sc 2 comes out, and before that I didn't really play sc at all. But I found it to be really fun because there are alot of different tacticts with each race, and alot of different ways you can mix and match unit combos with your team. Aside from that the whole world of starcraft is just really cool, the races, the different landscapes, it all adds to the whole experience.

But if you want to put all that aside, Starcraft is a VERY competitive game, it was made perfectly to work on the ladder and work as a great game for tournaments and such, if you think sc is popular in North America, that's nothing compared to South Korea. I'm not going to get into the whole South Korea/ Starcraft thing, but I'll just say its really big and it's bigger than national sports here in North America.

Anyways, hope I helped :)

If you don't appreciate the ancient quality of Starcraft you're likely a platform fanboy. Even then, most platformers know Starcraft from when they palyed it 10 years ago

He also lost credibility when he said that Starcraft has little tactics.
Starcraft requires a ton of tactics and involves huge amounts of microing and macroing.

While its certainly true the Starcraft is old, for its time, it was absolutly amazing. Aside from the rush tactics used by little noobs (easily countered by experienced players), Starcraft's depth and balance is incredible. It really does require a lot of practice to develop good strategies, and there is no god strategy that pwns all others (except maybe massing carriers, but again that can be easily countered by experienced players). You can't really compair graphics to today's RTS, as obviously technology is way better than it was when Starcraft came out, but the interface and the controls are still top notch. So overall, Starcraft is an awsome game that, while is most definately shows signs of aging, is still by far one of the best RTS of all time.

well, if you want to know what made starcraft so great at that time, is the fact that before it, RTS had one generic race with little or nodifferences (like age of empires, one race with variants depending on civilization) or they had 2 (C&C for example,NOD and GDI)that of course, being 2 it was easy to balance them, but starcraft was the first one to have three, and while it doesn't sound like that big of a deal, it actually was a big difference and it became a landmark on gaming

also, the story was absolutely great for an RTS, which tend to have little story, and they're also never focused on characters so deeply as in SC

It is balanced and maintained the test of time, I mean if now a game like this were released we would say, that sucks, but alot of people got into SC when it came out and stuck with it.

There was a game before Starcracft that had 3 factions: Dune II, by Westwood Studios, later to be swallowed up by EA. Granted, Atredies, Ordos, and Harkonnen shared some units, but there were strategical differences, and House specific units. It should also be noted that this game preceeded the original Warcraft.

You can play Starcraft however you want, and anyway you play it there are tactics. You can play making major tactical decisions or just micro-ing units. The play is VERY competitive, the story is AWESOME, there are 3 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT RACES (not just British vs French or somthing - this doesn't just mean different units), and the graphics are immersive. I hate to say it but from the looks of things right now im gonna prefer original Starcraft graphics to the new ones. They are brilliant. Simple 2D sprites give the game just the right "feel". I always felt "into" the game. Im not a "feely" person. THIS IS THE ONLY GAME I HAVE REALLY BEEN TOTALLY IMMERSED IN!

Starcraft and Counterstrike are two of the most hyped games in the entire universe. 80% of the fans will ignorantly tell you that it's the best game ever and you are an idiot...so don't listen to them.

They were made a long time ago. There are BETTER THINGS OUT NOW, GREENER GRASS. Yes they were probably good games then, but they aren't now. I personally hated Starcraft for the fact that the one with the most resources wins. There was no real strategy in Starcraft besides for the best strategy to gain minerals and resources. It wasn't a battle-strategic victory that won you the game, it was an economic victory that won you wars.

That's why I liked Dawn of War much better...it revolved much more heavily on strategic battles rather than economic victories. Then again, I don't even really like RTS games...they bore the hell out of me (no offense RTS'ers...it's just me).

I played the singleplayer of SC and multiplayer a couple times, and I'm not really a fan of RTS in general but I can see why people love it because of the following reasons:

- It is one of the most 'balanced' RTS games ever made. I say balanced in that each race has its pros/cons, maps are well designed, etc.

- Lots of different tactics, macro/micro, etc. This game isn't just about rushing.

- Few bugs

- Alright storyline, for an RTS, it's got a pretty good storyline/plot.

- Blizzard Entertainment... they have made some very influential games and have gained lots of fanboys.

Can't think of anything else right now but I don't think it's hard to figure out other reasons for the success of SC

Yeah um...Starcraft still is the best RTS. I've played and finished:

C&C 1

Read Alert 2

Dune for Sega genesis

Emperor: Battle for Dune

Warcraft 2

Warcraft 3 and TFT

Warhammer 40,000

AOE1 and expansion

AOE2 and expansion

AOM and expansion (which I really enjoyed).

I have glanced at Supreme and C&C3 and I doubt that they will be any different-though im sure they will be okay in its entirety-they can still be fun if they don't possess these qualities. No RTS ever made has actually come close to SC. It has a great single player story, 3 PERFECTLY BALANCED, UNIQUE races, COMPLIMENTING units (marines, firebats and medics with ghost support etc) and of course greater strategy and simply more interesting units. All the games except SC have these exact problems (yes W3-please don't get me started!). Though After SC I would say that AOM was the best I had played.

Just got to add I don't like how SC2 is shaping. It simply doesn't look the same from visual, voicing, new characters, plot and dialogue-I also don't like this new thing about interacting with the soldiers and choosing your own dialogue crud and choosing your units for a mission-just seem unnecessary and buy into this now popular sandbox thing about games. SC2 has been influenced (rape-ified) by W3.

This isn't true for any well-known RTS, let alone SC. That's a pretty ignorant thing to say.

That's why I liked Dawn of War much better...it revolved much more heavily on strategic battles rather than economic victories. Then again, I don't even really like RTS games...they bore the hell out of me (no offense RTS'ers...it's just me).Skullheart

Capturing point is just another way to gather resource, don't sugarcoat it as something better. And DoW isn't any more strategic than SC, so stop saying nonsense.

Total Annihilation was a much better game, same with Shogun Total War released around that era, it's pretty over-rated, it's got a nice story, but it's a pretty simple game.

starcraft is good because it was developed by god, handed down to blizzard and given to millions of unsuspecting people.

the game is awesome, i played it when it came out and i cant stress out how much i love the game and its nostalgic feel.

also, i hate you for not having the same opinion i do.

I think the problem is that he just started playing and doesn't know the ropes so he just assumes that the game is actually shallow and requires no tactics... which is quite untrue.

The main reason why people love starcraft it's the first RTS they played. Let's face it, the game was huge. People are too ignorant and stubborn to try any other of the decade. On top of that, find another RTS made in 199xthathas recieved this much support from the creator after it's release.I played about every RTS of the 90's (the golden age of RTS's) and found Starcraftto bepretty generic. It was made extremely well and was pretty interesting, but there were a few that rank higher on my list. To begin with, Red Alert was and is the best RTS ever made. Next would be Total Annihilation, with Age of Empires after that. I guess Starcraft would be after these. Flame away

Flame awaysixty7velle

Woops, meant Age of Empires 2... The first one sucked. And for the newer RTS's, suggest Company of Heroes, it's sick

Don't turn this into a what-the-best-RTS-ever-is thread. First game we played or not, it was a very good game.

It's not the best RTS's ever, it's just the ones that own Stracraft

Starcraft, and AoE are both on the top of the greatest RTS games of all time IMO. Command and Conquer is also up there too

And what does that have to do with SC being loved? People can't love it because it's not as good?

Grantelicious

You are comparing a 10 year old game(albeit the best of its generation) to modern RTS's of course its going to seem dated.

Yes, and I responded to your reasoning. I just told you not to incite a flame war by comparing SC to other games.

I own or played for a long time (probably borrowed from a friend or something) just about every big RTS since Warcraft 1(never played Dune 2 unfortunately), including all AoE1-3, C&C(all), EE(just the first), SC, WC1-3, AoM, DoW, CoH, RoN, Battle Realms, TA, SupCom, M;TW. Starcraft rapes every single RTS game released in all of the genre's existence. By Far. As in, it's not even close. I have more fun playing Starcraft NOW(just the clarify- IN THE PRESENT) than the rest of these games combined. Why? My favorite feature of Starcraft is how it seems to scale perfectly with the skill levels of the players. Games like CoH, SupCom, WC3, hell just about all games force you to play a certain way. Starcraft doesn't. The tactics and strategy are truly infinite, even at the pro level where they seem to follow set patterns.

Youhaven't answered by question yet (minus RA2 bit of course)...

I fail to comprehend how you can like TA and AOE more when the teams are near identicaland if Red Alert is similar to RA2 then how can youplace them higher despite them havingsuch enormous flaws?-While SC has it the gameplay, equality and uniqueness...

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You guys make it sound like the guy is retarded for not liking StarCraft. I love the game, this guys doesn't, oh well.jakedogg14

Thank you for saying something intelligent. I'm not a big fan of Starcraft myself. I didn't find the gameplay all that entertaining, and I have never seen what the fuss is all about. Does that mean I am saying that nobody else should like it? Nope.

But thats the thing its NOT dated it is till the best made to date! What the hell do the other RTS game shave apart from graphics?!

I don't need to:

Make alliances

Trade

Zoom in to first person

Make walls

Even having sea warfare is redundant since if you control the skies you can deploy anywhere as long as its on land-you cant build in the sea (in any good RTS) etc.

There is like nothing else that these RTS games have on Starcraft-like in SC I would be annoyed if you could make alliances and trade minerals-that would be dumb-DETRACTING from the SC's simplicity BATTLING AND SURVIVING!

I will have to disagree with you there when you imply that Starcraft surpasses Supreme Commander when it comes to using tactics. Supreme Commander has the massive maps that actually gives you room to maneuver your armies to flank, surround, and besiege your enemies. How can you say that is not a tactically superrior game? I've had battles that lasted for hours because the other player and I were fairly evenly matches, and I've been stomped into the ground in seconds because I made a mistake and didn't get enough offensive units up and running fast enough. That's all SupCom is... Tactics. Starcraft simply doesn't allow for that kind of scale for the use of such tactics. Starcraft is far from the end-all-beat-all of RTS games. If fact, there isn't one. It may be a good game, but it is by no means perfect.

I haven't played Supreme Commander. But I can see one thing that is wrong from the videos-the 'super' juggernaught. Each race has one right? Isn't like that in sc there is no super unit becuase they are generally super unfair. Though I imagine they can be killed like AOM-but still from a (studying to be a game designer)design view is is quite similar to a one hit kill sniper rifle.

The teams aren't identicle... AoE2 is a historic RTS. What more can i say? TA basically took what was great about the C&C games and added to them to add depth behind the madness.
