I really don't get it. In my opinion, leet speaking sounds really stupid, and well, childish. Don't get me wrong, I'm no grammer Nazi I'm not the type of poster who thinks that he or she is an english professor and harps on someone over and over for grammatical or spelling mistakes. But at the same time, I really don't understand why some people leet speak. To me, it seems very stupid, loserish even. For example:

"I didn't really enjoy the game, it was kind of boring to me"
"OMG dat game is pwnage you n00b!! Grafics are KICK ASS!!! etc etc"

So, I'm interested in hearing from all of you, especially those who do it often: why do it?

Leet speak is basicly what the original poster gave an example of. It is an over simplified way to speak in which whole words are dumbed down to a few letters. I personally hate it and never use it, except maybe when I am trying to make fun of those who use it.

something like this: l33t or l33t5p34k it's really annoying

On the subject:

I think it's more useful when on keyboard an you're not using teamspeak. sry for tk is just easier than sorry for teamkill. That's about the only times I use it. In normal text I find it rather irritating.

In game I can understand it and would never chew someone out for it, but here on a forum there is really no excuse.

I agree, but I'm sure a lot of people here don't. Maybe it has something to do with us growing older. I remember how my mom yelled at me for playing loud rockmusic. Nevertheless, I think it can be disturbing in regular documents... don;t know exactly why that is. Maybe because you have to decipher at some level. Seen that movie Ali G. in tha house? There's a  scene in it where he tries to make a real short text message to make things speed up a little. Ofcourse the guy receiving the message doesn't know what he is talking about and decides to call him. I often feel that way... But there is some hope for us illiterate people.

Personally I don't even like txt language, I find it stupid that people type u or 2 instead of you and to. It's alright for actual texting on phones by there's really no point on forums since it's not hard to type the actual words. Leet speak is REALLY lame if people use it regularly, but it's funny when people use them in jokes.

Yeah, I have this one idea for a short film: two people are having a conversation completly in leet speak. So instead of laughing at a joke they would say "LOL", I mean literaly spell it out. I don't know, it could be good.

Listening to someone talking in leetspeak would be absolutely the most tedious expierence you'll ever see. Therefor it would be a very good idea to make such a short movie. If done right, you really can make a statement with it. Nice one.

Interesting, most of you have the same view I do, in fact, almost all of you do. To clarify, when playing an online game or something, I often use short forms, and I dont care when other people do. It's just quicker, and you dont exactly have time to type full sentences while playing. But I dont think  "sorry for tk" or "lol thanks" or anything like that is really leet speak, its more a short form. What I am refering to are the people who regularily use the term "n00b" or "noob" or "pwnage" or something like that, while on boards. In games, I guess it's just loserish trash talk, but on forums? Any leet-speakers want to clarify why they do it? I really am curious, not trying to be a jerk or anything.

It started back in the early '90's when real hackers would chat on message boards but didn't want people tracking their conversations, so they would make up approximations of the words so they would know what each other was talking about but law enforcement would have a really really hard time finding them. It somehow de-evolved into this gibberish, nonsense, pseudo-language that 16 year old nerds living in their parents basement use because they think it makes them sound cool, even though they sound like morons and the actual usage is totally wrong and pointless.

I don't fully agree to this as I have first hand experience in the scene. I started out long before the early 90s. In the scenes where I used to move around we all used to send regular text emails. Echelon was something obscure and there was a lot of freedom back in those days. Now, I can't speak for the total community here, so it might just have its origins there. But I like to think MSN and clones have more to do with it. Especially in the early 90s 'cause the re was no broadband thus no webcam. Teenagers tend to form their own language, that's really nothing new - you have been doing it while you were young too (10 to 16) It has a lot to do with forming groups and determining who is in or out of it. In Dutch we use(d) to call it turbotaal or turbospeech. Language is something that is a very moving thing. (I'm very interested in languages) 20 years ago, when I was gay I was happy, nowadays if I say I'm gay...(which I'm not according to both me and my girlfriend  ) it means a totally different thing. So you got a keyboard, a teenager and a language. This was bound to happen.

Its sorta like people speaking gheto, when they arent gheto. Its annoying. People who speak leet is usually little kids new to gamming who think they are awsome. When they suck. It usually happens like this.

*begging  of round in COD2*

*10 seconds pass*

*BOOM headshot*

"OMG!!!11!!11!!!!!El1even!! HaKcsssss"

I think thats a perfect sum up of exactly what leet speak is, a little extreme, but there it is. That kind of extreme leet speak is kind of like cyber graffiti. I'm more irritated by the "uber pwnage n00b haxxors" spewing fan boys. I always find that fan boys are the most likely to use leet speak. I wonder if there's a connection between the two...a very very irritating connection.

Most of the time it's just people with normal vocabulary simply making fun of it and being funny in doing so. Don't get your panties in a twist about it

I really don't mind it that much...when your in the middle of a fight you need to shorten your words (I know get a mic) but it's not that bad normally if I say it I use as little as possible "NS man you pwned him" it's easier then saying "That was a good shot you certainly killed him that time."

It could be me, but I spend more time deciphering leet to read than I do typing something in the midst of game, sure, I'll shorten something, skip a capital letter here or there, or even mispell something, just so I can get back to the game, but like others have said here, using ABBREVIATIONS OR ACRONYMS like rofl, tx, ppl etc., is okay, but, I just do not see the speed advantage of substituting numbers for letters, anyone who uses a keyboard regularly will have to agree to this.

And as far as sms messaging (texting on phones) all I have to say is WTF is that all about (see another good use of "leetspeak", getting around the censors), I don't know about you, but don't you have to dial the number you are texting to?? And if so, would it not be just as easy to leave a voicemail? Sorry, but I have never really gotten the point of a text message except for maybe sending an address or time and date, you know that kind of stuff.
