So, I keep hearing, over and over, that PC gaming is a dying breed of gaming. They seem to say this because of how much it costs to have a decent computer and also because they say that not many people buy the PC games. I don't think that this is true. A lot of my friends love the PC and the is what they game on most of the time even if they have a console. I don't want to start a whole war thing here, I'm just wondering why people are saying this, even though every other game coming out is made for pc!

Well, console gaming is definatley smarter, you can play most all games that are for PC on 360 and PS3. But I personally perfer PC gaming, at least for FPS games.

The Witcher was on consoles? Total War series is on consoles? Diablo series is on consoles? WOW is on consoles? ARMA2 on consoles? Gothic 1-3 is on consoles? Dawn Of Discovery is on consoles? Staker series is on pc? Crysis 1/Warhead is on pc? Galactic Civlization2 is on consoles? Starcraft2 is on consoles? Why did I ever get a gaming pc then!!!!!!! :P

Also a huge aspect of pc gamign is the awesome mods for so many games, along with beign able to upgrade and customize your pc.

PC definatly is not going anywhere.

PC Gamers are the old men sitting on the porch barking at the world passing them by, thats why.

Most of them are, at least.

PC gaming isnt dying, its just evolving, and the people getting left behind dont want to admit it is their fault theyre left in the past, so they say its PC Gaming's fault...like PC Gaming is some sort of entity :P

Most of the people who say that are either joking or are high schoolers who play only on consoles. I've learned to just ignore people who say that.

Because it makes them feel better that their console games are up-converted 720p, with no FSAA, Aniso, vsync, or filtering, s*** shading, 30fps capped (that look like PC games from 8 years ago), terribly imprecise controls, and pay-to-play schemes . That would be my guess. PC gaming is fine. I'll stick with PC games unless they are 360 exclusives that look reasonably interesting.

It's not dying at all. It may have lost popularity over the years due to accessibility and what compared to consoles. Obviously, publishers and developers are still finding ways to invest in the PC market or else no games would be made for it. Multiplatform games have become the mainstay these days with fewer and fewer exclusives. This drives decision making because people are less likely to buy a particular platform based on the games it has. It's just a few examples, but overall, PC gaming is not going to die. It's a silly notion.

Better example, people are still playing StarCraft: Brood War, now that's old. Do you know if people still play Wolfenstein: ET?

PC gaming is history's greatest Zombie. It's been "dead" for decades, yet it still walks the earth strong as ever. My favorite way of explaining it :)

that is what Europe said five years ago, and now look at them :P

PC gaming is still strong, but it is slowly fading. Hopefully, by the time Asia catches on to console gaming, a console wi ll basically be a keyboard and mouse (almost like a prebuilt PC via Dell or Gateway) and the evolution will be complete!

Consoles for the most part are closed systems. People have very limited control of how their console operates. In a age where the distribution of media is becoming a ever more relevant issue as internet speeds increase, the number of people online, and peoples ability to upload and share content with millions of people worldwide. The internet is a vast place. Tracking down and eliminating a specific file and any other copies that have spread is a near impossible feat. Publsihers/devs want to be able to have a control over the content distribution, and be able to gain a profit as games become ever more expensive to produce. Console piracy is also a issue, but it is in no means as widespread and as much of a problem as pc piracy. There is a growing trend for games to be multiplatform to reach a larger audience, and in many cases devs/pubs choose console as the main focus as they know they can get more sales out of it. Technology advances and the gap between what devs can accomplish on a dated console as compared to a new pc shortens, thus the need for a new high end gaming rig is no longer needed to achieve the visuals and quality of content desired.

This is just my personal view of the way the industry is headed. By no means is pc gaming dying, however i see a future where there are a lot less exclusives and what is capable on consoles will rival what is done on pc's.

The only reason I would buy consoles would be for the exclusives. I wouldn't see any other reason for buying hardware again, that is actually older than what my PC has.

Then they graduate from high school and realize they were wrong.

Multiplatform development is far more profitable than exclusive development regardless of the original system. The only reason why console games can stay exclusive is because the system owners themselves enter them into contracts which guarantee exclusivity for a price, as this adds incentive to buy the platform.

It's very impressive that PC gaming doesn't have this advantage of a massively wealthy entity which buys us exclusive rights to our games, yet it still manages to outperform any of its competitors in terms of its quantity of quality exclusives.

Majority of the people who still continue to spread such accusations continue to be uneducated, ignorant, don't posses enough exposure into PC Gaming overall or are just plain spiteful for whatever reasons and there are many reasons to take into considerations - personal grudges and displeasure's, media politics and agendas, etc.

At this point in time, we are seeing PC evolving into different medium - Digital Distribution. With it come convenience, better prices and various deal. This year alone, even majority of multiplatform games will be superb on PC. Actual System Hardware had dropped in price significantly over the last few years.

I'm able to build up very good Gaming PC for around 700$ compare to 1400$ few years back. You just need to have little more knowledge on PC components and their quality. All the information can be found on various websites, I personally still use Tom's Hardware.

I highly doubt we'll ever see PC as dead gaming platform, if anything it will continue to evolve.

Declining maybe, but very slowly. To be honest I used to be a big PC gamer about 10 yrs ago but started playing on consoles more and more. Consoles failed me last year by providing sub-par games, crappy hardware for all 3 systems, and no plans for new hardware anytime soon cause they'd rather cash in on motion controllers. I upgraded my PC and have only bought 2 console games in the past year (Halo Reach and Little Big Planet 2), mostly bought PC games off Steam. I'm not sure if i'll ever go back to consoles.

i don't mind the hardware on consoles. i loved PS1. it invented so many games. now they just make graphical updates around those same ideas except for Wii. it does something new, but it doesn't suit a "hardcore-gamer" like me.

i'm also pretty much PC-only atm. let's see what the future has in store for us.

Thank you for the collected thoughts. Because I figured they were wrong, it's just that I couldn't help but get a little uncomfortable. And I totally agree that the console community sucks. Not to make them mad, but seriously, it's just swarmed by immature 11 and 12 year olds.

PC gaming is going the way of comics. It isn't dying, it's just undergoing a massive change. A big example of this parallel is digital distribution like many of you have already mentioned.

Lets put it this way...

People dont really strive for quality anymore, they strive for simplicity and generally the people that see things this way also think that other people see things this way so they assume pc gaming is dying because they think everyone sees things this way.

PC gaming has entire genres of games that aren't available on the consoles. Who's gonna replace that?? Nobody. PC Gaming will live.
