Why do games like crysis and splinter cell double agent require a cd to play. this is really annoying because i always have to get them out of their nicely shelfed cases to run them. Crysis didn't do this till i installed it on my new hard drive after unistalling it from the old one. and now because of the new patch i can't use the no cd crack.

Splinter cell double agent is just a mess on vista, it crashes alot, and quick save and checkpoints don't actually count as saved games after a crash, plus it doesn't even run super high resolutions, i.e 1680X1050. and why do i need a cd to run this game. would it help if i unistalled both games and reinstalled them to get rid of the using a cd to play? does this even make any sense. thanks

but other games like lost planet, stalker, and halo 2 don't need a cd to play. im all for curbing pirating of games but why inconvienice your loyal consumers. i guess that is what steam is for.

Thanks, i was just making sure it wasn't something i did during installation. or the fact that i took the disc out before i ran the game for the first time. i heard something about that, that if u take the disc out before u run a freshly installed pc game for the first time, u will always need the cd after that. any truth to that rumor.

Double Agent is a mess in general. It's definitely not just Vista.

As others have said, some games run partially off of discs to try and prevent piracy. In most (but not all) cases, the only thing not installed is a tiny disc-checking file, but there are work-arounds available if you know where to look. Some older games stream audio and video files from the disc, since HDD space was more limited in the olden days. Digital distribution platforms like Steam seem like a more viable future to me, though. And they make gaming so much easier. Some companes - especially THQ - support discless gaming. They're pretty cool.

I can't seem to find a link for it anywhere but I am sure I've read that Microsoft is investigating the possibility of eliminating the installation process with PC games. Getting everything to stream straight off the disc, just like a console. But yeah, I can't find any info on it now so maybe it was a dream. Or a nightmare.

It makes it less likely for someone to go buy it and install it and go back to the store and get a refund and still play the game...

NoCD cracks or any other method used to circumvent the copy protection is a violation of the EULA and is by all means against the law. Period.

actually if you own the CD and you still have the cd in your pocession and you don't want to have to use the cd. You can use a DVD image or No CD crack.. (at least thats what I've seen)

I'm pretty sure it's illegal altogether, especially since that's not enforceable. What are they supposed to do, come into your house and see if you have the disc to press litigation? Anyway, it's simple logic: cracks turn all single-player games into freeware, since anyone can just borrow someone else's disc, install the game, return it, and run a fixed exe.

I agree that Steam is probably the future, since it allows discless gaming but at the same time doesn't allow that kind of game sharing.

Because some developers think it is possible to stop piracy by making the lives of legal owners more inconvenient.

Well that isn't really true my older brother got Crisis for free he boot legged it. Anywase they make cd keys because thats away how they track the sells of the games so that when someone enters a cd key and if you get a boot leg it won't let you play but some people figure out how to hack the little cd key that is just my theroy i am not sure if it is true:evil:

Are you thinking of Tray and Play? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tray_and_Play

Or was it something even above and beyond that? Tray and Play seems to have really gone nowhere past Halo 2 :)

I think the TC did something to the thread he's maybe not supposed to. I don't know what, but it's fishy.

I checked the html source of the page and a previous poster "DeltoidRecon" has an invalid image link in his/her signature. That's what is causing the popup. Nothing too much to worry about.

Actually, there is no way to prove, nor disprove whether or not the person downloading said "Cracks" are reputable gamers who've merely lost or misplaced their CD, or pirates who are trying to illegally hack the game and play it.

Hence, it is a violation of the EULA, because you are not owning the rights to the property, you are owning the rights to play the game through the developer's means. If you should somehow misplace those means, your rights of playing said game are no longer legit.
