Hasn't it been going on for ages now in very large numbers. PC games still sell surprisingly strong, and digital is getting larger too. I think they may just act like that because they try to compare PC game sales with console sales. It is not as simple as that. Lower Costs and less royalties, the rising digital market, long-run sales, and the decreasing price of gaming grade computer parts, among other things, have to be considered on the PC publishing side.

Just because its not new doesn't mean the cumulative effect doesn't hurt them more each year. Less income in subsequent years means you have less capital to deal with in the present and future. Also they need to cry more about it because nothing they've tried has worked, I wouldn't expect them to ever give up, nor should they.

I posted this in the other thread so if youve read it my appologies... but Im gonna post it here too.

If you owned a store and people came in and started stealing all your crap you would put some type of security in. More than likely it wouldnt work all that well, a minor deterent, but you would still do it. After you installed your security and people said, "well we are not going to shop here anymore." you would say...??? Im guessing too bad so sad. I am not saying you dont by games with DRM, but that argument is the same for those who are against DRM or any other type of game security.

Right now the game companies are trying to find a simple minor "intrusive" way to combat piracy and nothing has worked thus far. Sadly, the only way they are going to be able to stop it is lobbying for ridiculous penalties if you get caught.. Im talking prison time for people who pirate along with ridiculous fines. Additionally, they need to have a system similiar to what Autodesk has for their software. With the invention of .Net software it would be really easy to require and internet connection to validate the game, and yes that would solve most of the piracy problems. Try and find a copy of Autocad 2007-2010 and being able to ever plug your computer into the internet again... I dare you. Actually don't, cause people who do their machines get JACKED.

Anyways, my whole point is that the DRM that we know today is going away to something completely different. Its just that no one wants to be the first to pull the trigger for fear of a "boycott". But its getting to the point now where thy pretty much have to... HAVE TO. For people that dont understand how bad piracy has gotten... 4.1 million copies of MW 2 were pirated. 4.1 MILLION. Pirates are screwing it up for all of us... and I hate you for it. Get a job and pay for it.

Also, with youre comment on lowering prices there are two things wront with that:

1. The depreciation of the dollar (Thanks OBAMA, KEEP PRINTING MONEY AND RAPING OUR FUTURE!!) would hurt them even more.

2. Free is still better than paying.

Diablo 3 is not pay to play... Whoever told you that need to stop using the white dust...

They said that some battle net features will require that you pay (like moving character over realms or select a new name) and so on.

checklist to reduce piracy:

1.have an attractive package. have some collectibles (posters etc..) to force consumers purchase the item. if the package sucks no need to add it in your collection.

2. create high quality games. dark void was released. the game was looking promising and then reviews kill it. this is an example because people like to try games but do not affort to buy them if they suck. so what they do is just simply download them.

3. have strong multiplayer components. so people can purchase the games to play online with an original cd key.

4. dont rush and deliver poor games. this is for movie tie in games which all suck. ALL KNOWS THAT REPETITION = BAD GAME. take your time to design games because when reviews kill a game, also they kill the possibility of purchasing the game.

5. Availability. i am suprised to hear that some really good games are not available to some countries. Are you people serious? its like saying to your customers download the game. Recently i heard rumors that blazblue for pc will be released only in france which is the worst move ever. OMG!! Think about what you are doing.

6. Have reasonable prices according to the game and if its really worth it. example is rogue warrior. the game should be $5 not for example $60.you want to charge more then WORK on your games.

7. have games that can be played easily on pc's. When crysis released everyone was warried about game requirements instead of Cod4 was a good looking game and had low requirements. what is going on here. warhead was running more smooth than the original.

8. have patches to fix broken stuff and glitches on the games. some companies dont even bother. so why purchasing their product when there is 0 service.

9. THINK OF THE CONSUMERS NEEDS NOT THEIR POCKETS. SOME GAMES ARE UNACCEPTABLE FOR RELEASING IN 2010. So people are scaredto purchase

10.Have demos available. trying the game might influence purchase.

You can add onmy list if you want

Peace out.

They can't expect people to not pirate games when it's so easy to do and when that game costs AUD120.

Piracy has always been there. It's just some people like to use it as an excuse for not getting enough sales.

while all these are true, 3 and 5 are debatable.

Portal, half life series and fallout series are fun because of its singleplayer value.

and about the availablity, I read article yesterday that Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez thinks PS3 is a poison. and I remember reading articles few months back that Austraila banned some games... Availablity has more to do with that region rather than the developers/publishers.

Because those people cannt believe that their games are not making money on pc while they make on consoles. So its piracy and not "other" reasons!!

sounds like alot of people are defending piracy. Its still freaking illigal. I spent my hard earned cash on my games. People spend lots of time working and developing these games. What your saying is you don't repsect the developers enough to acutally pay them for the work they have put into them. If that be the case then you shouldn't even want to pirate the damn games in the first place.

Companies usually blame piracy for bad sales to cover up the fact that the game they made sucks!

What the poster above said is 100% true, well except the fact that good games get pirated as well. Ok so maybe it's not true at all. And if it were true then pirates are the most stupid people on earth as they are stealing crap? Is that why they do it, because they want crap? ok then that explains it.

piracy is more of a concern now because now that games have a larger audience than lets say 10 years ago (every year COD, halo or gears breaks a new record) and it hurts the smaller companies such as the cryostasis dudes or companies like croteam, crytek, etc. where they dont have as huge a fanbase as blizzard, valve, bungie, activision, etc. the small companies have to make as many sales as they can because the dev teams are larger therefore making it more expensive. also piracy is more rampant because of the tough economic times and the sudden influx of really **** games like COD, halo, gears, uncharted. why buy MW2 for 60 bucks when you can have it for free on pc especially when the game is as short and dull as it is. i dont endorse piracy, but i can see where people come from. piracy of games from smaller companies i dont like though because it affects them more than a company like activision or blizzard

At least, you take the time to download the game and play it, if the game is good enough that people want to pirate it, go crazy!

DRM will never stop hackers, but DRM does attempt to keep honest people honest. Example: Yeah anybody could break into your house if they wanted, you have glass windows, but would you still keep your door unlocked at all times? That analogy applies to piracy and games/software.

what i find funny is that the gaming industrie has been growing since its begining. Making more money, reaching more people, etc... Piracy has been around since the medieval ages here in europe. The first book-printing machine was illegal too because it was "coping" books. The market needs to adjust to piracy not the way around. - make games free and use in-game ads (it ads up to realism too but they shouldn't bombard us with it) - make games free with limited options and use pay-unlocks (5 dollar/euro) to update your game. - Make a good singelplayer game and an even better multiplayer game - ... You can't look at intelectual products like software/music/books/... as if it was an item in a regular store. because intelectual products can be re-produced (the owner doesn't lose the product and therefor doesn't make any loss) What i'm saying is that most people who download a game and don't buy it ever wouldn't have bought it in the first place. Games i bought: Red Faction Guerrilla, Crysis, Fallout 3, World in Conflict, The Witcher, Orange box, Left for Dead 2, ... I'm not gonna say things that could get me in trouble on an American website but lets say i'm not gonna buy dragon age origins because i kinda "knew" i wasn"t gonna like it. (and there is nothing wrong with that) And yes, capitalistic puplishers can make it hard for the buyers because of piracy (which always was around before the big company's and mainstream gaming) Did you know i couldn't play on my birthday with my own band because of Sabam (copyright belgium) They walked in saying we didn't pay for this even't! :p (you have to pay sabam so the artists get "payed", even if we wanted to play for free, its mad) It has come to this for nothing

actually they dont...

its just another form of theft... (so they say) so is the arm and leg they want to charge us too..(dont forget that)

but it starts messing with their money... (profit) if you think its anything new for "controversy" over loss of profits, you need to take a real good close look at every single war America has ever been in (and why they were in it) and who made money off of it.

i would love to see the developers come down hard legally on pirates leading to fines and/or jail time.

the fact is if you cant afford to buy a game you dont have the right to own it.

as someone who pays for all there games i group pirates in the same scumbag catagory as your every day thief.

So you have never pirated or copied or done anything releated to piracy at all? Ever? Well in that case i have to welcome you to the internet because you are clearly new here... I know there are a few holier then thou people around here... But comeon dont lie on the internet that you have never pirated or something. Go to any school class in my country and everyone will know what it is or they have someone doing it for them... Its like the "how many people pirate games in sweden" survey they did... And they came up with a low number... But tbh who would say "hey there i pirate games /signed [name]" Atleast one person in each family do it in sweden and lets say the average family is 5 ppl and we have around 10m people... then you have alot of people that pirate games... and lets not forget the nr of people that have others doing it for them... The music gangsters tried to bribe and enfroce laws here in sweden where the pirated basicly laughed them in the face and began to download even more things from these companies. Im sorry but i cant feel sorry for companies that bribe swedish cops and when they buy judges at courts.

So you can't see the difference between removing physical property and copying data?
