I played it for about 3 hours and got bored out of my mind. The combat is horrible. The AI sucks. Not scary at all cause of the graphics and AI (maybe other reasons). The RPG character customization and story seems cool, the only thing I like about it. But even that is tedious trying to get skill ups like an MMORPG to be able to do speficic tasks like use a weapon or hack something. The levels are just repetitive mazes, feels like work getting through them, killing enemies which is tedious cause the combat sucks and is repetitive, searching through every little thing to pick up stuff, trying to find doors, etc. Reminds me of WoW, where you keep doing boring raid after raid to reach a goal even though you don't like doing it (the goal in this case is the story). Does it get better or what?

What does being boring have to do with it? You said the game reminds you of WoW, which is beyond stupid.

Oh I see, you stopped reading after "Reminds me of WoW," so you missed the part where I said "where you keep doing boring raid after raid to reach a goal even though you don't like doing it (the goal in this case is the story)."

Maybe it's just, you know.. not your kind of game? I loved it, it's in my top 10 best games of all time. Everything you said that was bad about it, was excellent in my opinion.

Were you constantly setting off the alarms? When I played it (a tech character), it was about 80% exploration and 20% combat.

And the combat is fine, as long as you don't expect it to play like a typical FPS.

What? The game is linear, you're forced to fight to find ways into the next area.

I've only set off 1 alarm the whole game and that was the one in the beginning. I duno, maybe I'll try the game again in a year or so.

Back on topic..

The kid is entitled to his opinion. Granted SS2 is not an easy game to get into. A very steep learning curve. Though it is silly to criticise the visuals given the game is nearly 10 years old now. They are still quite clean, bar the pyrotechnics of the explosions.

For all its RPG elements, its a game about key searching.

The level design also isn't as interesting as say Half-Life 1.

People like it due to the mix of RPG/FPS/Stealth and the futuristic setting which was different from most (fallout the exception) at the time. If anyone is serious about the game then head to http://shtup.home.att.net/ (shtup = shock texture upgrade), this is compatible with the rebirth mod as per http://shtup.home.att.net/. These add-ons enhance the atmosphere of the game alot and are worth the time to install...they are mostly graphic updates.

There are two realities in life, the subjective reality and the objective reality. My "exaggeration" was an objective remark, one that attributes the quality of the game. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it isn't good. So many people have problems with telling the difference between these two things. You should read what I wrote again since I never claimed anything about anyone having to "like" SS2, just "realize" that it is a very well-made game.

It's a game for masochistic gamers. You know who you are.
Games have generally gotten less and less masochistic over the years, and it upsets the so-called "hardcore" gamer.
So in order to relieve the built-up tension that forms from playing through insta-respawn-chamber-thus-allieviating-the-pain-of-death games like Bioshock, a couple bouts ofI Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Gameis necessary every other day or so.

...and dangit why aren't links working! Get thee compatible with Google Chrome Gamespot! (more likely the other way around; but w/e forum software Gamespot uses pisses me off, so they should be the ones to budge!)

WoW is forever the worst game ever in my mind. It completely destroyed my friends life. The only population I have ever witnessed to play that game is people with esd or extreme social deficiency for short excluding my friend because he used to do cool things like surf but now his hobbies are eating sleeping and playing WoW..

Please take note that I am in no way mocking any WoW users on this forum. I am not just biased because its WoW and allot of people hate it, I actually tried it and gave it a good 40 hours before I decided that this is the absolute most boring RPG I have EVER played. Plus the graphics never get better I feel like I am stuck 8 years in the past. EVEN Runescape had a graphical uplift that makes it close to WoW's graphics.

Personally I wish that all the kids who waste their time on that game realize that its not cool to put 100+ hours in a game per week and really blizzard must be laughing all the way to the bank right now because they can make a game that is boaring to play and look like garbage and still make a killing-profit. Just my 2 cents and enjoy my rant on WoW. I would say more but what I actually have to say about the game would be 1000 times worse then any thing you have ever heard about he game... Seriously I made a 39 year old cry because of what I said about WoW.

Okay I understand what you are getting at now. Sure some of it is well made, but that shouldn't mean that elements of it can't be criticised - like the level design!

Nonsense. HL's levels are extremely linear, how the hell is that more interesting than SS2's non-linear and more realistic level design? Even Bioshock has better level design than HL.

Moving in and around deadly machinery, falling through floor boards, crumbling cliff faces, tiny air vents, alien planets, the infamous train ride - HL 1 we are talking about, has some of the most varied and exciting level design of all time. Aided by great cinematic scripting as well.

SS2 has some really dull level design, like the cargo bay, which are pretty linear too.

late to the game and don't want spoil the nice conversations being going on. so I'll just say my piece.

to OP:

1. whether the game is scary I don't think has anything to do with this game's rating. some people find it scary, but it's good for discussing scary games, rather than whether SS2 is a good game.

2. I can completely understand how you feel and your confusion since frequently there come a game that I loathe while others loving (Oblivion comes to mind). SS2 is not your game, but to some it's their cup of tea. well, it just so happens that a more vocal group at GS likes it or even worships it.

3. personally I think it's the best FS view game I've played. but not my favorite (being the two NOLF games). for a FPS type of game, it has the richest player style config possiblities (the naosuit of Crysis can cry a river in this department), and tell a quite interesting story in FPS games. Pit it against CRPG greats such as Torment, BG2, and even Arcnaum, its story is quite weak, but for a FPS, it's great.

then, for the HL vs. SS2 thing. both are great FP shooters and being praised and loved by many gamers for years. saying one is better than the other is close to meaningless. but if you guys want to word-slugging out a winner, have fun.
