Because I hate it. Every time I play a game that baffles me with how unfun it is, it turns out to be mega popular and all my friends start talking about it nonstop for weeks on end. Urgh.

Sounds like me :P Except my friends haven't stopped talkin about LoL ever since they picked it up like a year or two ago. it never ends
As others are saying, it's free! But, also.... Riot adds a bit more character into their champions than HoN and Dota. Not to mention the increasingly large amount of microtransactions and devotion to skins in the game! I for one, like LoL more than the others just because there is more dependancy on items. Plus it's less of a mind baffle when you die..... Of course, I kinda just suck at Dota and HoN... :(

I agree partially, it's no fun when you're getting your ass kicked and die in a blink of an eye. But it's a ****ing blast to play the other way around.
You can tell riot games really love there product and I think thats what makes it so succesful. They are really interactive with the community. The dev team is constantly posting on the forums in threads where people ask about the upcoming changes or even some fun threads too. I mean the other day I saw a thread made by some totally random player saying Marc Merill ( the president of Riot ) was sexy and he actually replied quite a few times in it. When are you going to see the CEO of other gaming companies just browsing the forums and talking to the community?
Also the champions have a really good feel to them, they all have a great backstory and a lot of lore is poured out every week in the journal of justice to keep that fanbase happy. Theres an actual sense of a story behind the game for the people who like it. It's not just a main menu with a queue button.
It's pretty much really well balanced overall through not many people like to admit that after they got stomped hard by "so and so champion" and they really work hard at making the game as fun and fair as it can be. They release major changes every 1-2 weeks and champions aswell.
Theres a lot of reasons why LoL is really popular and it's because Riot created a great product and they have a great team to back it up. I got to play a game with 4 riot members on my team last month after posting on the forums late at night wondering if any of them were bored :P
Dominion is also coming out soon which I think is another great map and game style thats gonna pull in A LOT of people. I mean, who dosen't want to run a Arathi Basin style map with the great champions of league of legends!
It's just pure fun. You hate it, you love it, you can't get enough of it.
Probably because HoN (S2 Games) seems to have the worst network backbone and server infrastructure known to mankind. -CheeseEater-
There are times when League goes down for hours because of one patch. Ugh, I remember the Leona debacle.
It's popular because it's fun and easy to get into.

I have no idea what you are talking about, it has one of the best, and the only time it had trouble was when it was constantly getting DDOS. LoL goes down nearly every patch for a day, S2 updates their game without servers going down at all. Not to mention if you have 200 ping it is still playable unlike LoL where it is rediculous. HoN has the same server type of infrastructure as valve, so are you really going to say that valve has horrible server infrastructure???
. I think their past tournament had over a million viewers...

No. Why do people keep repeating this awful lie? :( And a million? Come on, really?
