So every short story book out there should be sold FREE at BookStores? Every 20 minute short movie should be sold FREE at DVD Stores?it was a unique experience and all, but serioulsy, it is just a source mod with no actual gameplay. lasts 1 hr 30 min and has no replay value

Cause the person who made it wanted to charge money for it and there is clearly a market for it to actually sell so why wouldn't it be?
Why do you pay to see see a film? It's just moving pictures on screen and it's the same thing every time you see it.skrat_01which doesn't apply to Dear Esther really because the story is different every time you play the game. You'll never hear all the dialog in the same playthrough and the order of how the story is presented can change how you perceive the story that is told. You don't even see the ghosts in every playthrough either.
What a dumb question. If you didn't get it to begin with then why did you buy it?
Also im glad it did cost money cos it brought the devs fame up a great deal and allowed them to make Amnesia A machine for pigs. They deserve recognition and support. I bought it on Day 1 for a LOT more than it was during the sale and I have no regrets

Oh the story is deliberately vague, and indeed it is slightly randomised in delivery each time - the structure and plan however is identical. It's not different though, the same sentiments and parallel tales are there, only fragmented differently within reason.
- Because there are stupid people that would pay for it.
A better question would be "why does it cost as much as a complete game that required a lot of time and money to develop". And the answer would be the same.
It doesn't cost as much as a complete game, so keep trying.- Because there are stupid people that would pay for it.

Implying most "complete games" cost $5 and Implying Dear Esther did not require time and money to make.- Because there are stupid people that would pay for it.

Second person I've seen write this gibberish. You know you don't have to buy it right?
vfibsux
It really is this painfully obvious. Not only do you not have to buy it, you also have the option of playing the original source mod FOR FREE. So dry those tears brighteyes.
[QUOTE="JC_AEK4ever"]It doesn't cost as much as a complete game, so keep trying. There are so many games that cost less than £7 that I don't even need to try to find one.- Because there are stupid people that would pay for it.

I shouldn't bother but here you go: "- Because there are stupid people that would pay for it." --- Troll comment saying that people that enjoy the game are stupid. "A better question would be "why does it cost as much as a complete game that required a lot of time and money to develop"." --- It doesn't cost as much as a complete game, depending what u call a complete game. And Dear Esther is a complete game anyway. So maybe clarify ur point instead of wasting forum space from ur last 4 comments? We might get somewhere then.Because people put work into it? Surely you can see that... Just because it isn't a game doesn't mean its creators don't deserve compensation.

Ok, so what's wrong with Dear Esther? And why are people stupid buying it?FelipeInside1) Short. No interaction with the environment. Bad story. 2) You can buy a better game with the same amount of money. If you compare the quality of Dear Esther and any other game with a similar price you can see that to develop Dear Esther it did not cost as much as any of the other games.

But that's all subjective to personal taste. I agree the game is short, but the story is good imo (might be bad for someone else, hence the subjective part). You can buy a better game also depends on personal taste. I think Minecraft isn't that great, but other people love it. I don't think a person should be called "stupid" because they want to experience a journey through story instead of shooting things...

The story is just random. You walk around and when you reach a certain point in the island a random part of the story starts. You might play the game 1 million times and never listen to all parts of the story even if they are finite (that's what random means).
I never said people are stupid for enjoying it. I said they are stupid for paying for it. If you find a Ferrari and a Toyota with the same amount of money and you buy the Toyota then you are definitely stupid.

The car comparison would be valid if for example Esther cost AU$80-$90, same as an AAA Title with gameplay, interaction, online MP etc. But alas, it only cost $5, so for it's length, story etc then the price is just right. I don't see anything stupid with that.Because the guy behind it saw a excellent chance to rip people of :D He even got goverment funding to make this "book-game"it was a unique experience and all, but serioulsy, it is just a source mod with no actual gameplay. lasts 1 hr 30 min and has no replay value

And i have to say its a excellent scam, if the 118.000 copies is true, he has made close to 450.000£ on the "game" so far.
Which is sick when you think about it and its something a 5year old could have made in his basement.

Here it costs£7 = $11. The same as HL 2. Which one would you buy?

That's another invalid comparison, HL2 is 8 years old, and Esther is an Indie game hence the cheaper price as well.[QUOTE="JC_AEK4ever"][QUOTE="FelipeInside"]The car comparison would be valid if for example Esther cost AU$80-$90, same as an AAA Title with gameplay, interaction, online MP etc. But alas, it only cost $5, so for it's length, story etc then the price is just right. That's another invalid comparison, HL2 is 8 years old, and Esther is an Indie game hence the cheaper price as well. So what if a game is 8 years old? It's still better for the same price. Also, Dear Esther was a mod for HL 2, 4 years ago.

Dear Esther is a scam A scam normally involves PARTY A paying PARTY B for a service, and then PARTY B not delivering this service to PARTY A and cutting all communications links. In Dear Esther's case, you pay for the service (game) and it is delivered to you so Scam is incorrect term. Here it costs£7 = $11. The same as HL 2. Which one would you buy?
