So my grandma gave me this laptop because she never used it. It's descent, not meant for gaming or anything, just a good browser. However, the battery is terrible (like many laptops I have run across). I know this is a common problem with laptops and is probably just my batter, but I don't see how it got so bad without my grandma ever using it. Is there something else that could be causing this? I don't want to pay $55 for a new battery only to screw that one up because it turned out to be the AC charger and not the battery. Any suggestions? Is it the battery? Should I get a new one? Thank you.

for the most part all laptop batteries suck. I'd say most last about any where from 1/2 hour to an hour.

Since your unfamiliar w/ the laptop I'd say call/email the manufacturer, and ask them what the average battery life should be. You might be able to find out estimated use times for a new battery w/ more storage, and figure out if it's worth the upgrade.

Also since most laptop batteries are lithium-ion batteries I'd suggest checking out how to properly care for Li-ion batteries (wikipedia has a nice easy to follow set of guidelines).

I have had my HP laptop for 2 years now. The only thing wrong with it is the battery. It started out lasting about 3 hours. Now it will die before the computer turns on.

It happens. But the new liPo stuff from apple is pretty cool, 8 hours, 1000 charges.

Laptop battery life is often helped by callibration. The usual way involves letting the battery run totally flat, then charging it fully and letting it run totally flat again.

Sometimes not using a battery is worse for battery life than proper usage.

If you use a laptop plugged in all the time the battery is ruined. So many people do this. You need to run a battery down at least once a week to keep it working well.

Laptop batteries are starting to irritate me, too. I work with Dell laptops and nowadays the batteries only go about one year before their charge life drops off dramatically and need replacement. Meanwhile I have systems that are 3-4 years old whose batteries still perform normally. I swear its the latest greatest way to nickel-and-dime us by system manufacturers.

From what I've read, Lithium Ion batteries are a curious thing though. They are pre-destined to lose their charge ability and expire no matter what, and the expiration process is actually accelerated if the battery is left depleted and unused for extended periods.

Yes I know not to do this, because so many of my friends have done it.

Naooaoaooaaoa Do not do this on lithium ion batteries, do not discharge then, that kills the weaker cells. That's used on nickel cell batteries. What you want to do is, keep the battery at 40%, you can tell Windows this. 40% Is the optimal charge for a lithium ion battery.
