Why does my laptop dip below 30 fps on guild wars 2?

So I can max quite a few games on my laptop @ around 30 fps. So i figured GW2 wouldn't be any different since it is just an mmo. Boy was I wrong. I am currently playing on the absolute lowest settings possible and idle around 35 fps. When I move it dips into the 20-25 range and it's really annoying because im not even in any crowded areas. I had my laptop checked at canyourunit.com and it exceeds the requirements by a Loooonnnggg shot. My laptop specs are:

Core i7 2630QM @b 2.0GHz

Nvidia GT 540m gpu

6GB DDR3 ram

500gb 7200rpm HDD

Thanks in advance.

Because GW2 is demanding for a MMO.

Your GPU is really, really bad, I find it hard to believe that you can max anything above 30fps.

Your PC in general is pretty bad to be held up to todays standards.

gpu is nvidia. nvidia's support for guildwars 2 has been very.. very poor. theres storys of folks with gtx 560ti's getting crud fps.

amd has been much quicker on the draw. my hd 6950 runs at a toasty 60fps steadily. anywhere. on maximum @ 900p

i find this hilarious because its an nvidia sponsored game with 3d vision surround support

i wuz being generalistic. but on the hole the majority of fps problems seem to be on desktops or laptops with nvidia gpu's. its alot more uncommon on amd's videocard based machines. its not like nvidia drivers are free of scrutiny atm either. gtx 550ti & civ V is a fine example. there is a vram leak on nvidia cards in this game and while 2gb + vram gpu owners dont feel it at much my buddies athlon II x4 gtx 550ti machine crashes hourly as a result of a video memory dump

if you want specific examples

it seems to be that generally speaking. omitting exceptions nvidia gpu based systems have good fps up until about medium settings and then start fluctuating greatly varying on the card at high and maximum. (resolution may also be a factor)

amd related problems seem to be focused around 3 cards voer and over. hd 6950 1gb, hd 6970, hd 5870) the rest seem to be fine including CFX configs (but cfx does nothing for your fps at this time)

Uh the 540m is actually a solid budget graphics card.. I can play things like Crysis 2 on my laptop at high settings and native resolution.. It never goes below 34 fps.. And hovers to high 30s to low 40s.. Its aging though and Guild Wars 2 is a pretty demanding game..

Becuase your laptop has a bad GPU...yeah it's good for older games...but GW 2 is new, and very demanding! And Nvidia hasn't really paid much attention to optimizing for GW 2

I get sh!t performance in GW2 on my desktop, it's game or driver related at least to some degree so I'd just wait and see.

I have the exact same system (Dell XPS L502X) and up until 2 weeks ago I was getting 45-60 fps easily on GW2. However, my computer would crash every hour or so because the gpu was drawing too much power from the motherboard causing a surge which "stopped" the whole system and required a hard shutdown. I temporarily fixed this by underclocking my GPU by 110MHz on all clocks (Which didn't hinder performance at all) I got my motherboard replaced and I reinstalled Windows 7. Instead of re-downloading GW2 I simply moved it from windows.old. Now when I enter the game, my FPS starts at a nice 55fps and stays there but the moment I start to move around or turn the camera, the FPS steadily drops to about 20-30 FPS and although it is still semi-smooth, the moment I hit a zerg my FPS tanks to 5-15. However, when I change areas or alt-tab out of the game and go back in, my FPS jumps back up again to 55 FPS and the process occurs again. I Believe the true problem is an error in the game engine, or an error in the way resources are managed within the v-ram. It may have to do with my index.dat file being erroneous or be a consequence of a bad update which is improperly placing a greater resource load on the CPU. And as for those who say the problem is that it is a laptop, or that the GPU sucks, or anything of that sort, at least have the common sense to back-up those claims. The 540m has a graphics clock speed of 672 MHz, shader clock speed of 1342, and memory clock speed of 900. If you are having similar problems, or not having any problems, please tell us which GPU and CPU you have, as well as all the respective clock speeds. For GPU clock speeds you can use MSI afterburner or just Google your GPU model. And it doesn't hurt to be detailed.

Sounds like overheating - you alt tab out meaning the gpu isn't running the game any more and has a chance to cool down, then it takes a minute or so to heat up again and throttles to reduce heat.

Run the game in lowest settings , or you can connect external GPU for better quality.

Game just runs like **** on nvidia cards I think, Even my rig dips into the low 40s maxed out. I use super sampling tho but I think it still ran poorly without SS
