I have a few theories. I think the piracy theory is pretty lame, when compared to the issues of gamespot reselling games over and over and game rentals.

i never understood the whole Piracy complaint. Expecially from Crytek when their game sold over 3 million.
I think its because they can actually see how many times it has happened. I dont think gamespot tells anybody how many times they resell the same game.i never understood the whole Piracy complaint. Expecially from Crytek when their game sold over 3 million.

[QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"]It's pretty difficult to grasp, but I'll try to summarize the main points for you: When someone pirates, nobody gets paid for it. That not what I meant ,piracy is even there with consoles and Even more sometimes in case of ps2 and psp consoles.I hope you can grasp that,PC game is not dying ,its just that games on consoles are better sometimes ,just like I like playing on my xbox 360 more because of games like gears of war which are also made for pc but are much more enjoyable than on a pci never understood the whole Piracy complaint. I will ask this question in another way:
For all we know half of the people that decided to buy the game downloaded it first. If they would never have downloaded it they would never have got it in the first place... So did they get more money from piracy or did they get less? No one know. The End
I think so too, with hardware prices coming down and huge releases coming in the near future how could it not?pc gaming is on the rise...

I believe that with every new console the computer is more capable of handling the games for that console. Therefore, those who can't decide between consoles, or who are entertainment enthusiasts gravitate to computers.
Computer gaming will never die.
Thats true, I also think pc gaming is what adults do. Gaming on a pc is like driving a car, gaming on a console is like driving a bicycle.[QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"]It's pretty difficult to grasp, but I'll try to summarize the main points for you: When someone pirates, nobody gets paid for it. I don't agree with any of the answers. PC gaming is going to be smaller and smaller and consoles are taking over the market. Yet, PC will remain the happy island for MMO's, RTS', The Sims 2458, adventures such as Monkey island, Ceville etc...
And please let's stop to put all the blame in piracy, this is getting old... many people I know have eighter a PC and a console and get multiplatform games for the console cause they don't want to upgrade the pc, they want to play games on their big televisions sitting on the sofa, these games are usually available on console earlier than on the PC, you can sell ur games on ebay when you are done getting back at least 50% of what u spent on the game (I said ebay, not Game Stop) and lots of other reasons.
This is what you call "A failure to think for oneself". This is totally wrong. Many people you know, lol, hardly scientific stats there. Most I know online and in person get games for PC except Console exclusives, means nothing. Sales including Digital distribution show PC sales increasing, and more and more console games are noow going to PC then ever before. A few games are on console earlier, lets not make it out to be a large portion, most still launch the same time, and Pc has it's own exclusives, in fact, Pc has an impressive list. You can play Pc gams ona big tv on a sofa or anywhere you want, not sure why people keep bringin this up. Takes one little cable. Sales data, and the wealth of shooters, adventure, and other genres on PC show there is no merit to this argument, but hey, you know a couple people right?I don't agree with any of the answers. A game like Crysis, took a high end PC to turn, still sold 3 million, yes, PC is dying. Simply nothing of fact in this post. The only thing that has changed is the poplarity of consoles, PC has always been a smaller albeit still big market, that has never changed. MS, Sony and the media have a few brainwashed it seems. Stalker sold 2 million, The Witcher all great games, all Pc exclusive, all a big success, by the time these devs branch out to grow and go multi-plat, new devs will start on PC. PC is where developers get their start, anyone can code oN PC, it is easier to start, to be a dev for consoels you need tyo apply which costs hundreds of thousands, GSC gameword recently became a 360 certified dev, they said they could not earlier, too expensive. PC is where new innovative devs start. Just like Epic, Valve, etc, before them. PC has biggwer market potential then consoles, see the sims sales, too big a market to ignore. too much money at stake for Nvidia, AMD, Intel.
With console lifecycles getting longer and longer, i see PC gaming getting bigger as soon a low end PC will match anything the consoles can run. Things go in cycles.
The only place PC is hurting is the US, in europe Pc games sell as good or better then console, not sure what it is with americans and consoles, instant gratification I guess, but there is a world outside the US, worlwide sales of Pc games is in the billions.
I do not think its the media, dd, or pirates that gives the picture that pc games are dying, I think it is word of mouth, especially on forums like these.
I find it hard to belive that pc gaming is dying when pc componants for gaming are sold WAY more then consoles are put together (well not the wii, that one is in its own island).
There simply are people who wishes the pc to be dead, likely said person could not afford a pc, and seteled with a console, its the same person who bash all other consoles.
PC gaming is taking a slight retail hit tho, alot of games made for pc, are getting ported to the consoles, the so called multiplats are mostly pc games that is being converted to consoles.
Then there is the point of people on here claiming pc gaming is dying, theyre mostly american, if you look at Europe, Russia, and asia (all 3 way bigger markets then the US ironicly), they all prefer PC's over consoles, partly because they do not get everything advertised with said console, it is rare the online componants work quite right, or work at all in some situations.
In the states, I do belive that PC gaming is seeping out for a while (hibernation), over here in the country I live in, when making statistics, rescearch firms concluded that nearly all families has 1 pc, and nearly half had an aditional pc dedicated for gaming (likely one of the children). I must say 50% penetration on the market, is pretty huge (ok noted we are only 6 mill. people in my country ;) ).
Then there are the piracy issue, I really dislike pirates, and thewarped ethicsthey seem to have. PC IS the platform with most piracy, if you belive the reports (something like all software in use are pirate copys), Not my place to say if that number is tight or wrong, irony has it that even if you count the piracy rate (and if it is that high), It is still more profitible to make games for the pc then the consoles (the crit success is higher on a console, but if said product fails, or not lives up to expectations, you lose an uncanny amount of money).
Ya but how more could they have made?[QUOTE="zaibutzu"][QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"]

Their idea was 'we know what kind of game this is, we know how many people know about it, and we know roughly what to expect from sales. If it were a console-only title instead of PC-only, for a variety of reasons it would have sold more copies than it did.' They were always saying it was selling great, better than they expected, and they were able to break even on it (and eventually make a profit, I wager) - but given such a high profile release and the size of the installed hardware base capable of really playing the game well, the platform as a whole was underperforming vs. a 360 launch or something. And then yeah, they're able to see how many people are playing the game at various points in time, and can do some simple math vs. the numbers of copies sold and see some depressing news whenever they feel like it.This is what you call "A failure to think for oneself". Well, well.... what do we have here? Someone who's scientific and who could use some chilling out. Let's see... sales, including digital distribution, show PC sales increasing... wow, they don't put digital distribution data on the statistics cause they are too hard to measure, but you are, the man! You have the numbers! Then why don't you shere them with us? More and more console gamers are now going to PC... wonderful! Again, a scientific guy like you surely has numbers backing up his argument... but where are they? You can play pc games on a big tv, i give you that, when you write a wall of text you are bound to say something right... You want to talk sales? Okay... why don't you post the numbers? We established I am a brainwashed idiot, so that's probably a scientific task that could use someone like you... Crysis sold 3 millions, Stalker 2... given you are the genius here, you probably know that 2-3 millions is considered a great success in PC sales, but in console sales 3 millions is a poor income for a game, that needs to sell 6 millions in order to be considered successful... PC games is where new innovative dev start... why don't you mention some innovative PC gamas in the last 2 years? And by the way, you don't need to remind me there's a world outside the US, I am not American. And FYI, I am a pc gamer (only console I own is a DS)... but personal taste is not what the topic is about.PC gaming isn't dying, it's just a thing that some people think, because of overhyped exposure from any of the above given reasons. What people think and the actual truth are two separate things when a rumor like this is brought up. Hopefully not too many developers will buy a ticket to the crazy train heading for the supposed death of PC games. PC gaming is where it all began and where it all will end.
The PC market is not a homogenous market. It is a strength as well as a weakness, but that weakness have never been great enough to make the PC unattractive for gaming companies. I don't have any numbers, but I think that the PC is the single strongest platform for games. It may not beat the other consoles' combined sales, but that isn't required.
PC games were great back in the days of the 80's, they are great now and there seem to be many great PC games in the future as well. I'm looking forward to Dragon Age and Diablo 3.
PC gaming is dead, long live PC gaming!
yeah but it gets worse every year, its not the media or the pircay or the buggy console ports, even the exclusives are buggy even if you dot run them on vista, simply the unstability of the pc doesnt sell, or the hardcore games, the world wants simple games that will quarentee that will work properly, and the developers wanna make money, pc gaming simply doesnt sell they use consoles instead and lower the quaility of pc products.I believe that with every new console the computer is more capable of handling the games for that console. Therefore, those who can't decide between consoles, or who are entertainment enthusiasts gravitate to computers.
Computer gaming will never die.

i THINK most of us are missing the point.PC gaming is not going to die anyway.PCs are more verstile, more development friendly, more users friendly, more addons and mods friendly...etc
the dam problem is that most of PCs games are FPS,RTS,RPGs.we dont have these great adventure games like the dam japanese games on PS3 and Wii.im not an expert since i didnt play any console game, but i think PS3 and Wii have some great Japanese games i want to see on the PC.
as for the XboX,its just an inferior PC
The media isn't saying PC gaming is dying, it's only console fanboys. They like to criticize other platforms because it makes them feel better about gaming on their console and they want to feel like they bought the best system for gaming. Of course anyone who isn't a a blind, ignorant fanboy would realize that: - Consoles only last 5-7 years while PC gaming is the oldest platform and has always been around. - It has more AA and AAA exclusives than all the consoles combined for 2005-2009 alone. - It is the most customizable because it is the ONLY open platform. - It is the most technologically advanced platform (even at this gen's console launch). So please, enough with the "PC gaming is dying" threads. Even if you are only ASKING about it, you are keeping this stupid belief alive in the gaming community.TheBigBadGRIM
I'm not saying it's dying, but it's getting smaller: Consoles only last 5-7 years while PC gaming is the oldest platform and has always been around: irrelevant if I want to game today. It has more AA and AAA exclusives than all the consoles combined for 2005-2009 alone: according to GS, the only exclusives from 9 and up in 2008 and 2009 are: King Lich (surprise), The Sims 3 (again, surprise) World of Goo, Crysys Warhead, Galactic civilization 2 (expansion) and Sins of a Solar Empire. That is 2 expansions, 1 RTS', one indie, The Sims 3 and a shooter in almost 2 years. It is the most customizable because it is the ONLY open platform: irrelevant if I want to game today. It is the most technologically advanced platform (even at this gen's console launch): do we really need more graphics? It's not dying, but it's getting smaller...
Mainly I would blame the high development costs and the multiplaform trend it gave birth to. The only high budget exclusives will be the ones the manufacturer paid for, and unfortunately PC doesn't have that luxury. And while PC might have the best multiplats, the majority doesn't care about "the best", PC will always be in a disadvantage with multiplats because of price, image and because it's not as easy or convenient as consoles.
Great exclusives are still there for PC, but they aren't mainstream enough and thus the idea it's dying. Piracy is an excuse, if one game can do well despite it then others can too, and there are still many succesfull games on PC. DD doesn't help either, games fading from store shelves means even less visibility.
being a pc/consoler game, i dont think pc gaming is dying at all. Though it seems console are more populated because its alot simpler. what i mean is that you dont have to worry about upgrading pc parts, Most HARDCORE pc gamers have a gaming rig, they are alot more expensive too.
The console also has a larger age range which makes it an easy audience target. Therefor there are more games advertised for the consoles. We must look at this perspective.
As for the game itself and the developers, they are a par with each other. There are still alot of big pc game developer (EA, Blizzard, Relic) Pc gaming will never die. I cant see it happening
It's a huge conspiracy. A ton of people are involved. Fox News, CNN, NASA, Reverse Vampires, Debbie Rowe, Mel Gibson, several players on the St. Louis Cardinals, the guy who made Alvin and the Chipmunks, Iraq, and David Letterman. I don't know how each of them is involved, but I know they are. They want you to believe that pc gaming is dying. Don't let them get to you though. It's not dying. It's better than ever! :)
I didn't vote for any of the things you suggested. I think another more realistic reason that PC gaming may appear to be declining is because not as many people like to think about compatibility and upgrade issues. It's so much easier to just grab a console and buy a bunch of games for it that you 100% know will work. It's none of this, "Hmmm, well, it says I need 2 GB of RAM. I have 1.5. That might be enough. And my video card is generic but it's equivalent to a...".
You know... that whole thing. There are still a ton of ppl out there that like pc gaming and that will continue to be unless console gaming really excels and becomes much better than pc gaming. It would have to offer the same advantages that pc gaming has AND go beyond that. That would mean that consoles would have to start offering mouse support, chip upgrades, better graphics/sound, the ability for easily installing legal user-created mods for games like Oblivion, and more. Of course, if console gaming becomes like computer gaming, then what's the point?
It's not that PC gaming is dying, it's that PC games are nothing more than Console Ports, now....ThreesixtyciMultiplat games arent always ported from console. And there are plenty of exclusive pc games out this year, way more than any console.
I love PC gaming but if you think it is anything but a shell of its former self then you're sadly deluding yourself. Mediocre, unoriginal games and afterthought console ports are what's killing PC gaming, not piracy. Piracy has ALWAYS existed (it exists on the console too) but now on the PC it's become a convenient scapegoat, a game developers version of The Boogieman.
PC gamers that pirate games are also killing gaming as well, but console makers are also spending big bucks to make sure we think so. And as I have said, those who make PC games are killing gaming as well. What I mean by that, is they continuosly rush great games and do not complete on finishing the game. There are some great games being made these days, but they are too short, the difficulty isn't what it says it is, and there are some huge things missing out of most of those games.
