Because it caches everything to make stuff open on the fly, 4Gb of ram nowadays is cheap, two years ago it 3x more.

Well you see Vista is designed to shift more data back and forth to the RAM, this is supposed to make the operating system more efficient, however it turns into higher system memory requirements. Inevitably Vista has been driving the computer hardware market, so Vista has been good in some ways. Anyway you really shouldn't worry cause as long as you have at least 2 gigabytes of RAM then you're just fine. Also, Service Pack 2 for Vista just came out a few months ago.

Because in its default configuration Vista uses a lot more RAM for itself than XP did.

Just look at it like this...

When XP first came out people complained about how much more RAM is used than other operating sytems. Vista's launch was almost EXACTLY like XP's.

Indeed; XP seems to use up twice the RAM that Windows 2000 did. The incompatibility issues during XP's launch were even worse since a lot of people were upgrading from 98 SE instead of 2000, and this was their first taste of an NT-based Windows. TONS of applications broke with the change, especially games. However, I'd make sure that if you're getting a new PC NOW and not in late October afterward, your Vista license is eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. Vista isn't that bad, but Windows 7 is easily the best Windows yet.

I don't know about the best Windows OS, that's either NT 4.0 or 2000, but yeah. 7 is awkward, it's requirements went downward instead of upwards, either way I am loving it. Anyone who is getting the RC, no fears, it's exactly the same as RTM, I've used both for a while now.
