ya well I expected some steam fanboys to reply.
on what level is charging MORE for a digital product that cuts out things like packaging and distribution costs in any way an ethical business model
it's theft, and they can't be suprised when people will resort to not paying for products.
I'm not a steam fanboy...just stating the obvious. The industry is clearly moving digital...if that makes you quit gaming then that's your choice but it's happening. What is it you want us to say? Get all emo and vow to quit gaming if it goes digital with you? Hell no! Granted I live in the US but gaming has never been cheaper and more convenient since...ever.

Oh, and I use gamersgate more often than Steam these days. Their blue coin system is really cool and they have very competative prices. I also use greenmangaming a lot for steamworks games as very often they are cheaper then steam.
This. Or try a CD key vendor. You'll be forced to use steam anyway with SR3. Still, the games priced at 80-90 are usually steamworks titles as publishers want to prioritise retail sales to rid of their stock - Digital distribution just doesnt have that problem.Well, buy a hard copy. It's a Steamworks game.

Is Steam to blame for this or the Australian government?MythPro1Publishers localizing the prices to match retail. It was $38 AUD at GMG - a Steam key... and $45 is the cheapest I have seen if you import a boxed copy. Digital still wins. Ah well, I guess the TC doesnt shop around.

Yeah I tend to agree. From my experience, 80% of the time (maybe more) it's cheaper for me to buy a hard copy. Unforunately though, I think developers are eventually going to drop hard copies... which is a shame. Why haven't you fell off the planet? You must have magnetic shoes.
Also Steam,Origin etc are great!
(Ok mabey not origin)
Just get an american friend to buy it for you.
I have my european buddies coming to me all the time to buy them stuff. They pass me the money via paypal, I gift them the game. They save money and get the uncensored versions (they are germans, they have the crappy censored versions).

Um... It's not theft if you're willing to pay for it.
sorry you live in the wrong country when it comes to buying/gaming on steam bro. everyone knows games cost a crap load in australia

I find the tone of your post to be rather abrasive. Digital has its own set of problems and challenges to overcome before it can honestly replace retail completely. Bandwidth costs money in most countries. The publishers are passing on the costs of packaging retail copies in the form of bandwidth cost to the internet service providers, who then pass those costs off to the consumer. If one's internet speed is slow, it might be faster to drive to one's local store, buy the retail game, and install off the DVD than to buy digital. Internet providers need to be cheaper, faster, and more reliable to make a full move to digital. There is no reason to believe that is necessarily going to happen in our lifetimes.
Not really. Games wont go fully digital and if they do it won't be for another decade or so. There's still a lot of places that just don't have internet or the internet connections to download large games. Not only that but a lot of us still like owning hard copy games. For example I shelled the 150 for the CE or Skyrim. Companies make huge money selling hard copies so don't even worry, they're not going anywhere. Then your days as a gamer are numbered. Enjoy it while you can I guess.

You do know right that why the price is that way is because they can :) and also it is understandable taking piracy into account. So i have no problem with paying the same price as a hardcopy, more money means more money for their next game.went on to check prices for saints row 3

Eh, Valve doesn't decide the prices for new games on Steam. The retail-sellers usually don't allow Valve to make Steam-games cheaper than physical copies.went on to check prices for saints row 3

If you found my tone abrasive, what do you have to say about the OP and his fanboy comments? You get the responses you deserve.
Anyways internet penetration is growing every day, speed increasing, ect...the issues are not as big as retail's issue...the most important factor to a business too...cost to distribute. The industry is moving digital that much is clear. Does that mean at some point everyone just stops making retail boxes? No probably not, but when 90% of game companies stop producing them and the ones that do are pretty much just $150 CE's that's really the end of retail for all intents and purposes.
"There is no reason to believe that is necessarily going to happen in our lifetimes."
You should go look at some statistics regarding internet penetration...forget a life time...look at the last 10 years alone.

And that's exactly why they cost that much on steam, so you go and buy the hard copy and retailers don't complain to THQ.
Also for the record Steam is just a platform, they don't control pricing of other companies products. Valve on the other hand offers very fair prices on Steam for us Aussies... so don't hate on them too much.
