whenever i hook up my 360 and wii through component cables, theres a bunch being cut off on the sides, as in, if i usually my HDTVs horizontal shift bar( where the color adjustment, sharpness, etc is) i can shift it both ways and see that significant portions of each side of the frame are being hidden away...why is this?

Is your hdtv widescreen? If so, does the image look stretched out horizontally to you? If so, then maybe the signal's being stretched too wide or something.

my HDTV is indeed widescreen, but it doesnt look stretched, however it seems as the frame is too big to fit on my television lengthwise, why is that? should it fit in the 16x9 HDTV frame?

Your TV is doing a process called overscan. Most TVs (including modern HDTVs) are setup to overscan the image on the TV so that the scan lines, broadcast information, and static of television broadcasts which is located just off of the picture are not seen by the viewer. If your TV is a LCD, DLP, LCOS, or Plasma there may be an option in the settings to turn off overscan or to perform 1:1 pixel mapping (if you do not see one of these options in the settings menu then it maybe in the hidden service menu). If you TV is a CRT TV it is extremely difficult to remove overscan and it must be done in the service menu of the TV. Some people try to correct this themselves but I don't recommend it because you can really screw up the geometry of the set. A certified ISF technician can remove it properly but this often costs big $$$.

i see...it doesnt do it when i connect through DVI, VGA, Composites, or S-videos, only through components, its a Dell W1700 HD Ready LCD TV, and its really annoying because its cutting off significant portions of the viewing frame, almost as if the frame was too long to fit my television, does anyone know how to turn it off on  Dell W1700? I googled it but i cannot find anyhting.

Many HD ready monitors have this problem. Try changing horizontal size Under the OSD menu of the screen when it's running under component. The value is probably jacked way up..

if i did that, the the screen would be shifted all the way to the left, meaning alot of the screen would be hidden on the left side.

Doesn't the OSD shrink both sides of the screen the same. There's two different Horizontal controls. One is Horizontal position which moves the image right and left. The other control is Horizontal size. Which squeezes both sides of the image.  After squeezing the image you may have to use Horizontal position to place the image centered in the screen. Did you try the OSD controls yet?

I just recently checked the manual. Boy those TV's display setting are convoluted. While in component mode did you try changing the video mode under special features. Also there is a setting for HOR. shift under the picture setting. Just a thought! That's one goofy tv dude!

yea those video modes are nothign special, it goes to 4:3 creating black bars on the side, but still hiding parts of the frame inside the blackbars, then theres a fullscreen which just zooms in, and the last one does the panorama thing, stretches the sides narrows the middle...and the HOR. Shift just moves the picture left or right like i said...guess ill have to deal with the overscan huh!

Yeah, I was expecting a way to shrink the screen left and right. After reading the manual though I relized what your problem was. Maybe call Dell up and see if they have a solution. It sounds like it's over overscanning (like zooming). Oh well...We all tried to help.

well its a great monitor for the PC....which is why i bought some VGA cables for my 360 since it doesnt overscan on VGAs, so that will solve that problem, but i think ill have to live with overscanning on with the wii.

and to the poster above, i sit like 3ft away from the HD set, lol so size isnt to big of a deal for me, though it looks amazing on my dads 32er.
