Why is this HD4870 cheaper than the others?

SAPPHIRE 100257L Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail- $259

I noticed that Saphire does have a 1GB model out for $40 more. Is the extra video ram even worth it? What games would I actually notice a difference in with the extra vram?

You will only notice the extra VRAM at extra high resolutions.

Actually, for once the extra VRAM may make a slight difference, although probably only if you play at higher resolutions. See this.
