Well if it's overclocked that makes more sense. Do prime95 and check how how it goes, I wouldn't be surprised if hit 85c. Try it and post back :)I'm using stock cooler and I did not overclock it, running at 3.0ghz...
The processor is 41'C when Idle but when I play games, normally it hits around 65 - 70'C... :(MRXwee

Actually as like JigglyWiggly said, there's also possible that my power supply unit might be dumping heat on my processor...
The PSU I'm using is CoolerMaster Extreme Power Plus 460w (black colour) and I am not sure whether the fan suck in air or blow it out. Also is it possible to change the blowing direction of the PSU fan?
is the heatsink properly fitted? take it off and put it on again and see if it makes any difference, has your case got decent ventilation? imprezawrx500
my 7200 though i dont o.c. id imagine would never get to that point get some decent thermal grease and remount that fan!

Still a bit high but a lot better than before. You could probably leave it, but I'd just turn off your side panel fans and see how it goes. For somehow yesterday the temp shoot up to 82'C (OMG!!). After that I rush to the shop to get a thermal paste to apply it on the processor, now the highest temp is 65'C.
MRXwee
After re-apply the thermal paste, I didn't close up the side panel first and after some testing the temp is around there as well.
That was my first time using the thermal paste, I not really sure whether I had applied the right amount of the paste. Tthe thermal paste I used is the syringe typed and I just used about half of the paste from it.

Hmm, that might be more than enough required. It could be the fan you are using itself. What kind of fan are you using for CPU.
its meant to be a pea size drop....am i right in thking you just used half the sryinge? After re-apply the thermal paste, I didn't close up the side panel first and after some testing the temp is around there as well.

Highly doubt it unless its going bad. Try leaving the side panel off and run some of the stuff you were doing when it got above 55C. Now if the the temps are way lower then they were with the panel on with fans then you found the issue, the case. Now if you are still getting the same temps with the side off then one of two things are happening temp probe issue isnt working right or you have a faulty part ethier the cooler(if it has heatpipes),cpu, or the motherboard.I just re-applied the thermal paste yesterday and the cpu fan is working and is locked on the board. Somebody told me might be the psu causing it but it is possible?

you know the E8400 has some serious issues as mine is doing the exact same thing. The funny thing is that I never noticed it untill I got a little curious, because I never measure temps unless I'm overclocking.

the highest mine ever hit was 90c after that I decided to do something about it. The thing that seemed to work is also the most expensive one sadly enough which is that I got myself a new case.
Sounds like you need to re-apply your thermal paste and reseat the heatsink. You bareliy need any paste, spread it thin w/ a business card. Make sure your prongs are all pushed in correctly, too.

Wow.. that's even worse than mine.. lol. Anyway I'm using thermaltake tsunami dream case. I think I would just leave it be as long it don't go over 70'C.Sounds like you need to re-apply your thermal paste and reseat the heatsink. It is found out that my board sensor is faulty for my high temp readings. After sometime I re-applied the thermal compound I decided to buy a after market cpu cooler as the temp is still quite high (65 - 69C at stock 3.0ghz).
So, I bought the Xigmatek Achilles and applied the Tuniq thermal compound with it and I found out that my Idle temp is still the same as before which is 40 and 41C. Thus, I think most likely the sensor on my board is bad.
Now I had overclocked the processor to 3.6ghz and Idle is still the same, and max temp is around 56C.
