Why no mention of in-game ads in the GRAW2 review?

I refuse to buy a game that has in-game ads in it. If a game developer wants me to look at ads for crap I have zero interest in, they'd better not expect me to shell out any cash for their game.

I was thinking of picking up GRAW 2 until I saw a review on another site which mentioned that the game is marred with in-game ads.

No sale.

Well genius, I don't pay for radio, nor do I pay for specific TV programmes. Were I to do so, I certainly would avoid ones that featured advertising.

I think it's a good reason, since when has having principles become a bad thing. I think that if the game has ads it should at least be cheaper to purchase, or have more free content released on it.

Well it shouldn't be. Personally, I actually don't mind it, with certain expectations. I mean, having ads in a modern game can add to the atmosphere and make it more realistic, but I really hate it, when in movies a car drives through a Coke sign, or there's a huge Fox8 ad in the background.

Ads should only be there to add to the atmosphere, and you can do this with fake ads anyway.

What's the difference if the city billboards talk about Pepsi instead of Super Cool Drink (fake) ? As long as it stays in the concept of the game, I don't mind at all. They can fill GTA IV's New York full of ads and I won't care because it makes it look more realistic and it gives a bit of additional money to the developer so they can work on a bigger project next time.

You realize these in-game ads are integrated into the environment, it's not like you are flipping through menu screens and need to press Continue on a advertisement to keep going or something right?

It's not that obtrusive, and in some games, I think it actually help make the game more realistic (GRAW2 isn't a good example).

But to each their own, if that's something you are firmly against, congrats for standing up for your beliefs!!!! :D I personally have a dislike towards single-player games that require an internet connection (unlock, install, etc doesn't matter) :P

If you play Battlefield 2142, you will see "Ghost Rider" ads in some levels and also Core 2 Duo ads. I think that if they make any money doing this, it's something new and somehow funny. But I think that a game having ads isn't a reason to retract you from buying a game.

It's its gameplay, the originality of story, the graphical designment, the music even that should make you buy, or retract you from buying the game. But well, as all, this is only my humble opinion.

Funny because, well, you know, in 2142 everyone is going to want a Core 2 Duo! :)

Hahahahaha true, but none of my concern. Everybody knows that mind control through in-game advertisement is the supreme objective of all giant industries to create mindless creepless zombies that then will make more adepts until all world is under the domination of this giants...

That's exactly what I'm telling you. Were and of those games to have advertising, I would not buy them. (Not that I'd ever buy MGS4 or God of War in any case.) As for "getting over myself", well, I do apologize for having the temerity to hold an opinion that differs from yours. My god, what effrontery!

Look, if you aren't bothered by paying full price for a game that sticks products in your face, then so be it. I will not do so. In the specific case of GRAW2, I find the argument that ads fit the game environment because they're on billboards to be absurd. The game world takes place in 2014. Why Discovery Channel would be advertising programming for the week of Aug 1-7, 2007 in 2014 is anyone's guess.

More importantly, the company that supplies ingame advertising track how long each player looks at each ad, and from what angle. This means two things:

One, your actions and habits are being spied upon. I find that rather sinister and have no wish to be a guinea pig for some marketing/demographics weasels who want to find a better way to market their garbage to me.

Two, they are eating up bandwidth to both place ads and to track how I look at them. That adversely affects my ping rate and contributes to lowering my ability to play well as well as increasing my frustration.

I think the thing is that people don't realize that these companys won't stop at just a few ads. If they can fill every game texture with an ad and still sell it, then they will.

Ingame advertising is fine as long as the publishers don't QQ when we block them.

If it's non-dynamic background stuff that attempts to recreate reality, then I don't mind so much. Like in NHL 2007, it doesn't bother me if they put ads for CCM or Bauer skates on the boards. Nobody's tracking my usage or viewing habits and it's not eating up my bandwidth. This dynamic crap like advertising Coke in a game that takes place 200 years in the future is garbage. I won't buy any game that uses such a feature and I'll be sure to let any corp who advertises with it know that I won't be buying their product either.

I agree with the naysayers on this. I refuse to buy (emphasis on buy) any game that has in-game ads. I don't wear clothes that make me into a human billboard nor will I play games that turn my entertainment time into a marketing campaign.

What really amazes me is people's willingness to accept this intrusive garbage into their lives. The depths the Playstation Generation will go through -- allowing themselves be tools of the Corporate Agenda -- will never cease to amaze me. I honestly think we're doomed...

I'm sure your sale is more important to them then the money they're making from ads..
