Why not see technology step back for a while and more quality games developed?

Why do developers have to keep pushing the limit and making us wait 2x as long for games when they could use the current technology and make more and more good games? They would make more money selling more copies of their software than creating a game engine and 1 game and then moving on...

Its easier to build hype for a game using pretty pictures than it is using promises of good gameplay.

Big projects = big budgets = big profits.

Small projects = small budgets = small profits.

It's a money game.

I really don't care about the graphics in a game, but the fact of the matter is that people look at screenshots and go "sweet" or "naaw". People are excited about Crysis, Mass Effect, Far Cry 2 mainly because of the graphics, even though they're probably awesome games. Someday this has to end though, content creation is getting too expensive.

Why do gamers constently blame developers? Did you guys ever stop and think what *really* dictates the market? Yup...it's you! This is capitalism, and the CONSUMERS drive the market, and therefore control what type of products are released.

Since the games that sell well (meaning the games that consumers buy the most of) generally have top notch graphics, that of corse is what the big developers will concentrate most on.

Don't like it? Stop buying games with good graphics (doubtful)...

Reality of the situation is of course, despite all this complaining about the graphics trends, we are all responsible for it. Also, there is a HUGE indie movement with TONS of great games (albiet "crappy" or "last gen" graphics) out there everyone seems to ignore. If you guys were really serious about this, why not support them? Yup, you *want* those cutting edge graphics as bad as everyone else. That's why you bought a kick arse system isn't it?

i would have been in total agreement with you until i played bioshock. Devs can take as long as they want imo if the finished product is as great as that.

Lets just hope other games, crysis, The Witcher and UT3 etc are worth the wait, i really hope they are.

Just check out the IPOD, or cell phones. People are in love with technology. If a game uses old technology but creates the most top notch game, it won't get as much attention because it's not the NEW top of the line stuff. How many people own a DX10 video card that they paid at least $250 or more for? That technology won't be used completely until at least another 2 years. Sure the card is better than the old, but did you know that movies are played at 24 frames per second, and we are playing video games at over 50 FPS, does it really matter at that point how smooth it is? Gamers just like music listeners want new technology. I'm not quite hip to the whole MP3 format, cause it sounds like crap to me. I mean CD sound good, but vinyl still sounds the best, so why did we move backwards in quality just so that it would be cheaper for publishers or record labels to give away their products. We want quality games, not premature use of technology so we can lose out on why it is that we love games or music.

LucasArts made great adventure games, and they never pushed the envelope of their games. All they did was create great stories with simple technology and they succeeded, until the adventure game genre died and now all they make is Star Wars games.
