I mean i am not an MMO player, i mean i want to play one but my computer can't handle graphically demanding games, heck not even WoW..but i really want to play that EvE Online because of its science fiction setting, but why do every time a new MMO is announced its a Fantasy MMO with orcs and elves and other fantasy themed creatures..i mean why not the change of setting?

I think its mainly because of WoW. Since its so popular, competitors want to try and beat Blizzard (but end up just copying them).

A Sci-Fi MMO is hard to come by.

If you're really set on getting EvEO then I suggest reading player reviews on it before you buy it.

If you dont have powerfull PC try games like this

http://www.ogame.org/

OGame is a strategic space simulation game with thousands of players across the world competing with each other simultaneously. All you need to play is a standard web browser.

Well its not MMO but...

Here is one SF mmo from Richard Garriot (he is the one who invented word MMO if im not mistaken) TABULA RASA

Yeah you are absolutely right..i mean everybody is trying to beat blizzard but i don't get it is that why even trying to beat WoW, i mean WoW is fantasy MMO at its best, why not go on a different route and make your own identity. i mean every time MMO games are discussed only one game comes to mind, WOW, developers should just forget beating blizzard and try to do something different to attract people's attention.

And i do read people's reviews regarding eve Online and majority of the reviews are pretty good except that almost everybody says that it has a very steep learning curve but that also say that the community of EVE is really great and helpful.

Mainly just becasue its been done so many times that its easy to follow the steps of other companies instead of thinking of brand new game mechanics..If you look at most upcoming MMOs though its mostly science fiction themed games on the horizon.

It has nothing to do with WoW. A majority of MMO's were fantasy based long before WoW came around. Fantasy is the easiest genre to do. I always felt that "ranged" combat in Ao was odd as you and the mob would stop 4-6ft away from each other and just stand there firing away. I do prefer space based MMO's like EVE Online and Earth and Beyond.

The short answer is because its easy. The only major success that I can think of that has broken away from this formula was City of Heroes.

Isn't there suppose to be a KOTOR MMO coming out in the distant future? I think if Bioware/LucasArts plays their cards right on developing that, it could easily de-throne WoW.... Because the first and second KOTOR were bad ass...

Exactly. And not necessarily all MMOs are fantasy based. There's several non-fantasy MMOs that have come out if you've been paying attention. Eve Online, City of Heroes, and Anarchy Online all spring to mind.

Theres a lot more non-fantasy MMOs coming too. Prepare yourselves. The companies are now just realizing that they can't beat WoW at its own game..

WoW does have something to do with it. After WoW's success, hordes of companies have been trying to emulate their success that wouldn't have even heard of the genre. If WoW didn't come around there wouldn't be nearly as many Fantasy MMOs.

You're right... people are making games that will compete for a market share of WoW subscribers but don't do it even half as well.

That's an awesome business model to make an MMO on...

No, if WoW didn't come around there wouldn't be nearly as many MMOs period. But the majority of those MMOs that are around would still be fantasy - just like they were pre-WoW. Look at the above list - those are the major MMO names before WoW, and they are all fantasy games.

All WoW did was bring the MMO to the mainstream audience and make companies realise there is a large market there.

Crediting WoW with popularising fantasy MMORPGs would be like crediting The Matrix with popularising science fiction films. It already happened much earlier. While it may be true, as with films, that there are peaks and troughs of genre interest in the computer game industry, including cyclical genre fads, fantasy has always been the number one setting for the MMORPG.
