Why such a long pause in the Half-life series?

It's been over 3 and a half years since episode 2 was released. Yes, 3 and a half years. It's been 6 and a half years since Half-life 2 was released, That's longer the the time between Half-life 1 and 2. Why no news of episode 3 or Half-life 3? It seems to me episode 3 should have been out a long time ago and Half-life 3 should be the talk of e3. It feels like Valve has brushed off the Half-life series to focus on Steam and other games.

I doubt there will be episode 3. If anything they gotta make hl3. Valve better be working on it in secrecy or i am not gonna see hl3 before the endo f the world. As for the long pause? they wanted to make smaller games but release them faster, they totally faild on the point of episodic gaming since it took too long. So they stopped.

I don't mind if they kill the episodes, but I'd like to see something to advance or end the story. I was never a huge fan of the story aspect of the Half-life series, but episode 2 got me excited for the next chapter.

My guess is that it's good for their profit model if they string people along and don't finish off the series. Soemthing seems a little fishy about it for sure. It's been so long, a finale would almost be anticlimactic.

I do hope that they don't make another one. The Half-Life franchise is terrible.

hl 1 - A game setting up the future of stories and cinematic for all future games = terrible. h2 2 - A game starting a new wave of amazing graphics, facial features, and next age physics = terriible

Wait no...

Both = Amazing

They are likely making a new engine along with it, plus their development team is small and they are, like Blizzard, perfectionists. They are probably experimenting with new potentially revolutionary forms of graphics/gameplay too.

Actually there is going to be an episode 3, my cousin who works for Valve can confirm this. Also if you remember back in the day when Episode 2 came out, there was a news article where Valve was saying that the story line wasn't even finished and at the time they were still working on the storyline for Episode 3. But I do agree that they should stop putting more effort into side projects like Portal or Left4Dead, and finish up Episode 3 already!

Because they can make millions making Left 4 Dead and Portal games on relatively small budgets, so why hurry up and pour a ton of money into the next Half-Life?

Three words Left for Dead. Why create a single player game when you can create a simple easily copied multi player game for a fraction of the cost of a full fledged single player and come out with more profits?

I've given up expecting anything new from the Half Life series. It would be nice to play an episode 3, or even better, and entire game that fills in the story gap, but I don't expect that.

I get the feeling that Valve is being fed a lot of delicious money through the landsliding success of Steam. Perhaps when there are more competing digital game distributors there will be more incentive for them to continue some of their franchises.

Have faith my friends

I have seen the mountaintops, Half Life 3 is coming and it will be amazing.

I was not sent here by Valve, but I did have a vision last night in my sleep

Well the expectation for Episode 3 is severely high considering how high regards many hold Half-life 2, I'm guessing they just don't want to release something that fans will deem as a quick and flawed finish.
