I just got a laptop that is pretty high end that cost me 900 dollars, and I find it can only play games that are made for xbox? Morrowind for example, I bought for my new laptop, it freezes in the middle of the game and crap, what the heck. X boxes are 150 dollars.

Sounds like you got a "Generic" laptop from BestBuy or some other place. Sure, they advertize it as high end, but the truth is, your graphics card probably sucks. So no, PC games ARE dominant, its just that you probably had little idea as to what exactly you purchased. Just because it costs you more than an Xbox doesnt mean you got a much more powerfull system.

Sorry to say it: A laptop can never ber a gaming computer. A laptop focuses on power consumption, and a decent desktop graphics card consumes more than your entire laptop.

Laptops are OK for older games and some newer RTS games, but they fail utterly on newer FPS games.

Laptops are never good for games. That simple.

Gaming machines arent that expensive. Today I ordered a £500 PC (so thats a PS3 and a couple of extra controllers) which will run Oblivion on high settings without a hitch.

lol maybe you should look at what your buying first. The best option would be to make your own computer.

A 900$ laptop is a crap for games... I'm sure yours doesn't even have a decent video card... maybe a 7600???

Try buying a desktop for 900$ I'm sure you'll be satisfy with that, mine only cost 700$ almost two years ago and I'm still pretty happy with that pc

$900??? I just sank $1,500 into my new custom built gaming PC. Anything that is $900 and bought from a store will not be a good computer for gaming.

Computers cost a lot because the hardware costs a lot, the hardware costs a lot because it's expensive to make, and those expenses are passed onto you... It's a little thing called capitalism

Heh, if you are patient enough, then you could build a computer using parts from www.newegg.com.

One of the best sites for parts out there.

yall are rainin on this doods parade ROFL, but yah sounds like he has no clue "HP from Frys" he just knows the name brand, none of the specs he got suckered.

I would be willing to bet its using shared memory for video/system and a stripped down version of a gpu.

for 900 bux mate you coulda built a sweet gamin desktop, oh well dont worry too much man, live and learn, and laptops are nice to have and you can still probly play older games fine, but unless yer willin to drop around 2000 bux a laptop aint gonna hack it for HIGH END GAMING.

Exactly. These prices change so fast and new tech comes out on a monthly basis. The markup on these products are so high that they can drop the price by half just like that.

you shouldnt have bought a laptop. Laptops are pretty weak compared to a destkop. PC Gamer tested a gaming laptop from velocity micro, the laptop got a lower score then my old p4 3.0ghz computer.

I like to buy the best gaming platform. Consoles performance cant match a pcs because they weaken the hardware to avoid high cost.

If you think a $900 laptop is alot, my video card alone cost $600. That was two months ago.

Dude you got a laptop for gaming? Let me guess, integrated gpu....you might as well get a macintosh.

Honestly why don't people get educated and learn that for the price of a ps3 you can build a beastly desktop pc that will run any game maxed?

Ignorance is no excuse for being ripped off.

Christ.

900$ ehh. When I started University 3 years ago I got a 2500$ laptop which played new games at that time decently. Simply laptops aren't for gaming. The 1500$ once CAN but for that cost I'd rather custom built another high end comp that would smoke any laptop or console. Remember INTEL integrated GPU = Checking Email or Looking at pics. Most definitely not for gaming.

Dx11 would have to come out after Dx 10 and it took quite a while for the jump from 9 to 10. also by that time the computer you have would probably be completly outdated

Thats not true a $1800 dell xps laptop can be very good performance with a 7900 type video card in it they can play games like FEAR at high settings. Youw ould be surpised. Though its of course not gonna match acomputer of that price or really one you can make $1000 or less.. But you can still great performance.

Why does a gaming pc cost so much? Well, since youre obviously refering to a top of the line pc, that truly does cost a lot more than the consoles, lets take a look at what you get...

1) A kick-ass gaming machine that can play all current (and probably most games for around a year) at high, if not maxed, settings. That is, higher than any of the consoles can go. Also, most game devs these days are making it easier and easier to mod games and make new content and maps, since it lengthens the lifespan of the game and provides more fun to the user (good to see epic making this available for ps3 UT3 as well). Whats more, the games are on the hard drive, which reduces loading times, and if you crack your games you dont need discs at all. In fact, some of the more recent games dont even need the disc after install.

2) A music and video player, and picture viewer that is far superior to anything the consoles can do. Why? Quite simply - massive hard drives baby! Ive got about 550 gb, and thats not that much these days, with hard drives getting cheaper and cheaper. You can also burn and use data dvds, if you run out of space.

3) An internet browser with full access to all the internets and all its glory. Email too, and a bunch of good instant messaging programs.

4) A workstation that you can use for work or for school/uni assignments, or anything else thats not gaming related - yes you build it for games, but its more than capable of running anything you may need for doing other activities. Whats more, your gaming pc will be MUCH MUCH better at these tasks than a basic computer that only just meets the requirements for doing them. Eg the $1000(nz) computers that were available a couple of years ago are terrible, they can barely run windows. Id rather pay a bit (or even a lot) more and get a system that does what its supposed to do well, and hence also has the capability to do a few other things... like gaming!

5) A system that can do all of those things at once! Of course, youd get no-where in your game or your work, youd miss a lot of the video and music, but thats not the point :P

Is that really worth all the extra cost? For me(who is merely a poor student), hell yes! But if you dont, then STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IT!!! Get whatever you think is worth what you pay for and be happy!

Well, it costs that much because the hardware manufacturers have to make money from their sales. Sony and Microsoft lose money from every console they sell, and Nintendo earns money because the hardware of the wii is cheaper and older technology.

Not to mention the Laptop market is narrow with the fact that the consumer has the inability to build one them selves for the most part.. This stops the company from being forced with competing with those prices of indvidiaul part costs.

Dell offers a nicely priced custom job for around $850 that more than meets most needs. It's not "high end" but it gets the job done. My advice? Enter a contest for an alienware or similar if you want real firepower without the requisite cash.
