Epic sold all the copies they made for Gears of War. It seems like there is quite a demand for the PC version of Gears of War. There is a bidding frenzy on eBay for Gears of War PC, it's easily going for $20-$25 a pop which I consider pretty high for a 3 year old game. I know there were 25-30 copies of the PC version of Gears of War at my local Best Buy store and they sold all their copies.

So, if Gears was pretty successful on the PC why didn't they release Gears 2 for PC? Is this another case of Epic being console w*ores?

It wasn't successful, it sold very poorly from what I understand. Epic was also concerned by the high rate of piracy of the PC version.

....And what evidence do you have that it sold poorly on the PC? If it did so then why is there a bidding frenzy on e-bay for this game and why did all the copies at my local Best Buy were all sold out. It seems to me there is quite a demand for the game.

You won't see Gears of War on retail shelves anywhere. Epic screwed up big time, the digital certificate was set for an extremely early date. All copies of the game were unplayable untill a patch was released by epic. Instead rereleasing new retail copys, they decided to just simply stop making the PC version.

The only places that you can find Gears of war on the PC is from a source like Ebay or the game for windows live digital market.

Your illusion that the game sold great is false

All the inital copies being sold. Not being able to find any new copies of Gears of War PC. Bidding frenzy on ebay. But do agree with Jango that the Epic botched the PC release by not releasing more copies. But there is a healthy demand for it.

The game came out in Nov 6, 2007, if anything the fact that it can't be found in a store speaks volumes for it selling poorly. When a game sells poorly there is no reason for a publisher to continue to manufacture copys and ship them out to retail to just sit there. I can also find tons of copys on ebay for 5-10 dollars with only 1-2 bids...

The pc version of Gears of War was a bug ladden mess. Most notably when you exited the game it erased all your save games making you restart from the beginning every time you played it. Epic whines about piracy to distract people from the fact they can't fix basic bugs.

Getting the game to start was already a hassle. There was something wrong with the .exe file and involved manually fixing it. The "patch" they released fixed it for some, but not for all, including myself. The game would crash randomly and then the good ole screen-tearing even with vsync on. >.> I played it on the 360 well before the PC version, but I was curious and wanted to see how it would look and play.

Yeah, and there was no digital copy to be found in 2007. How dumb can you be? They basically cut off 30/40/50%(dont really know what it was back then) of their potential sales base. I would be curious to hear some sales numbers. If it really sold as poorly as they claim, tell us some numbers.

Fortunately the original game apparently sold poorly on the P.C.. This caused Epic to realize that the P.C. has a strong immunity to bad games and hence they stopped trying to infect us with crappy shooters.

I'm amused by the amount of fanboyism in this thread :P

But speaking seriously, I believe it has to do with Microsoft's policy to secure more Xbox 360 exclusives (so that people buy more 360s).

Considering it had more multiplayer modes, more players, more maps and a map editor on the PC, if one was more um... gay than the other it wasnt the PC version.

A year late, no dedicated servers and being released the same day as COD 4 had nothing to do with it right? We're getting Bulletstorm which is total crap. It would have been successful if it was released same time as 360 version and had dedi servers. Your lying to yourself if you think otherwise.

This problem is not exclusive to Gears of War for the PC. Dirt 2 on the PC had the same problem where my autosave files were no longer detected, now I have to do all these crap to make it work again. The problem is with Windows Live. It's a piece of crap platform.

It's $5-$10 dollars now but what are the prices when the bidding starts to end. I wouldn't be surprised if it reaches $15-$20. At least when I brought it last fall there was bidding frenzy for it. It easily reached close to $20. And the fact that it can't be found, doesn't that mean that it sold well? I seen plenty of copies of old games lying around at places like Best Buy that hasn't sold yet. At my local Best Buy store they had 25-30 copies AT LEAST and they sold every one of them. That probably doesn't even include the ones they replaced after it sold out. That's just at my local Best Buy store, how about all over America and the rest of the world for that matter?

Is there even actual numbers of the sales? Looks to me they sold all the copies they made which is not bad.

Well I didn't have issues like you did except for the save game gone missing which I fixed by renaming some saved files to get it back. I downloaded all the latests patches before I started playing. I played the game in FULL HD 1080P with 8XEQAA and 16X FSAA on my HD 6950 (flashed to a HD 6970) with no graphical issues whatsoever. It looked great at 1080P at those settings. That's one of the reasons I would like to see Gears 2 on the PC so I don't have to buy a Xbox 360 and play it on Xbox 360's lame 720P resolution with crappy FSAA. Other than the save issue which I blame it on Windows Live because the same crap happened to Dirt 2, I think it was a well done port.

Yet Epic took no responsibility for this, they just blame piracy and call it a day... Id be curious how many it sold, never even seen an educated guess by anyone.

Epic sold all the copies they made for Gears of War. It seems like there is quite a demand for the PC version of Gears of War. Because X360 fans cried and PS3 laughing about X360s main/major "exclusives" werent exclusives and was "hurting" X360 sales and hype.. In the end they saw they did wrong and went back to original formula with GoW3 and Fable 3 etc find their way to PC. OR all this fuss about these games was a clever marketing to hype PC gamers with first games ( fable/GeoW etc ) so some of them might jump to X360 (buy one ) for next sequels.

Wow, didn't realize there was so much hatred of Gears by PC users. Honestly, Gears of War 2 (and soon 3) and the Halo series are the only the reason I still own an Xbox. As for why it didn't do well on PC, Microsoft an Epic put together a buggy port and didn't care about the PC version at all. Also, the game required a Live Gold membership to play online, which many PC gamers didn't have and weren't going to pay an extra $50/year. It's really a shame Epic has left behind its roots on PC, even though they're bringing Bulletstorm to PC. I only hope that they don't screw it up.

:D I have a purchased retail copy of Gears of War for PC sitting here right next to me - never knew it was in such high demand. *Contemplates clicking through to Ebay :P
