diablo 2 was released around six years before vista, it wasn't built for vista - asking why d2 won't work on vista is like asking why your old key won't work when you get your lock changed
that said, it definitely can run in vista - try running in a compatability mode (does vista even have compatability modes?) or just bypass the error if possible (you might be able to acknowledge the error and play anyway?)Â
checking the official diablo 2 forums would probably be a smart move - specialised forums are always the better place to look for problems, if you've encountered it - chances are many other people have too, which means there's probably an official or unofficial faq/what to do that you can find with a few minutes of clicking
I'm sure you've tried the obvious..but in case not:
Reinstall it? Maybe with a different setup- like how you can choose to install everything including the game videos onto harddrive..or just the game data..and I think there is other options. Try different ones out.
Does it have the latest patch? Get it.
Does it break when you have latest patch?..the same way without the patch- just out of the box? Maybe try other patches..if it works: play a bit, then try completing the upgrade to latest.
Â
Not sure, but if others have the same version of VISTA and are claiming they got it to work fine: chances are you could get it going after some fiddling. Good luck.Â

System Shock 1 was not made during XP.. it was made in the Win 3.1 era.. yet it runs. .:)
Bad analogy..
But I have heard D2 works in compatability mode in Vista.. So possibly DosBox will soon run in Vista :)

yeah, there are exceptions to every rule - some games work fine, some games don't work at all
which is like getting a new lock that is the same model as your previous lock, and while new, your old key still works
i hate being so pedantic, but i like my analogy very much! Â
