Why would anyone spend $600 on a Blu-Ray player when you can just buy a PS3?

Why wouldanyone spend $600 on a Blu-Ray player when you can just buy a PS3 for the same price? Iwas just at Best Buy and they had a stand-alone player for $599.99. Wouldn't you rather buy a PS3 that also allows you to play next-gen games?

That's the crux of Sony's strategy.

The only downside I can see is that the PS3 doesn't support IR, which means you can't do any programming with a fancy Logitech remote or anything. That and I don't know if the PS3 uses significantly more power than a standalone Blu-Ray player or something.

So is a stand alone Blu-Ray disc player costs the same as a PS3? Haha thats weird.

Well like someone else said, not everyone wants to play video games.

It's not that weird, these people need to make money on their hardware, the ps3 is sold at a loss. All i can really thing of are high end AV users that want the best, not the most cost effective. and lack of IR would be a huge downer for many I'm sure like DJ_Lae suggests.

Well I thought that a PS3 would cost more since its a blu ray disc player and a video game console so it would cost more than a standalone player. But yeah, I do understand what DJ means.

Even the 360 was sold at a loss despite not having an HD format. It's just the standard way they release consoles that are cutting edge and last long enough. Most money is made back from game licenses and when the console price production goes down over time.

When the PS3 came out, the cheapest blu-ray player was still like $1000. I paid $500 for a stand-alone HD-DVD player. It was practically a mini computer, with like a 2.4ghz P4, a stick of 1gig of ram, and so on. The 360 HD-DVD add-on wasn't out at the time, but when it did, $199 was a heck of a deal vs a $500 one.

Now that prices are equal between the PS3 and blu-ray players, a normal consumer will probably go witht he player since it's easier to use without having to go through a PS3 interface. And even still, the war won't kick off for either format until both are at $150 and lower, which then will put the PS3 out of range for most people looking for a player. When the first DVD playe came out it was like $1200 or more, and took a lot longer to lower in price than these new formats..

i had the same question concerning one of my parents' co-workers. i know they might not want to play games, but its got a bunch of other things you can do - save pics, vids, music, show slideshows to guests/family, internet for the lazy... i dont see why either. the guy had bought a standalone claiming it outdid my ps3 O_o. not wanting to waste my breath, i was like "ok"

i also hear of people that get nice HD tvs and want to watch the HD movies but they aren't really tech savvy so I think the PS3 kind of scares them off cuz they think it will be too complicated to operate and the stand alone player would be easier to use (i don't know if it really is simpler, just that I've heard this as a reason from a few people)

some stand alone units do a better job than the PS3 when playing films, and home cinema buffs will prefer this. What Hi Fi mag gave the PS3 a 4 star rating this month though, stating that its a very good and capable player that supports HDMI 1.3a and full HD playback at 24fps/1080p. So PS3 is very good, but not the best, and if your not a gamer as well then theres your answer.
