Why would my sound stop working?

I don't think I went to sites that had viruses, I went to a gamestop one. And a little later, the sound stopped working. Can someone tell me what I should check?

Could you give us a little more information? Do you have a sound card on your motherboard or an external sound card? Did you check all the volume settings some times you have to go into the control panel and check.

also have you recently added a video card to your system, i had a similar problem when i added one to mine when i uninstalled the onboard drivers it also removed my sound and ethernet port drivers aswell

I don't think I have an external sound card. I don't know much about this stuff, but I use speakers that my brother left behind. It just stopped working all of a sudden, and changing the volume doesn't do anything except make a few staticky sounds.
