The world of WildStar has changed. Carbine Studios on Tuesday re-launched the PC MMO as a free-to-play game and pushed out its biggest-ever update, which the studio is calling WildStar: Reloaded. We talked with Carbine Studios about the business model transition and the release of the new-ish game.

Now that WildStar is free to play, will you be checking it out?

You can start playing WildStar for free right now by signing up for an account at the game's website.

I would try it, loved the gameplay hated that there were not audiologs / voice acting - that was in beta, I hope it's better now

There was minimal voice acting in the final product (before Wildstar Reloaded).

Don't know if they added more but I've heard they have revamped the starting areas a bit to make it easier for newcomers.

I'll play another MMORPG when someone ties me to my PC chair

Or better yet, they change the pay model to pay the players.

Hell, if they want players, they should just add a gambling system, like CS:GO, so they can peddle gambling to minors, like Valve. People love to gamble.

Funny how you have an issue paying for a finished MMO product, but have no issues paying for Early Access for a game that is eventually going to be free. Logic fail, lol.....

It's a logic fail if you're greedy and your idea of gaming is "I want as much games for free as possible". Perhaps you operate on that level, but I don't really identify with that mindset. I'm more about supporting developers who want to bring more to the table (free games included). As for the developers trying to saturate the market with crap - they fortunately have people like you to rely on to support the cause.

Also, I don't have an issue specifically with paying for a finished MMO product. It wouldn't be relevant even if I did - the point of this thread is Wildstar is F2P. I have an issue with playing it. All popular MMORPG's are still scraping the bottom of the WoW-barrel.

Actually, my post wasn't meant as an insult or as a "dig" at you but thanks for responding like that.

Anyway, Wildstar is one of the better MMOs. Very well optimized, loads of content, super fun gameplay and a very particular artistic style. It just lacks in story and solo experience.

To compare WS to the mess that is DayZ there is no point. WS in it's alpha state was still a better product than DayZ in it's 179th Beta version.

If you're going to get sensitive about it - saying you display a bad taste in games isn't really any different than you saying I use bad logic. If I said "bad taste in games, lol...", it's the same thing, just a bit more half-assed.

You can sit here and argue that apples are better than oranges all you want. I'd rather watch grass grow than play an MMORPG these days. They dull the personality - it shows.

I have heard of this game, but no, changes are small I'll ever play an MMO again.

I rather put time into other games/genres.

If there was one MMO I would get, it would be Guild Wars.

Played it on release... good gameplay, boring grind, boring world .. (the jokes were bad...) ... brutal difficulty wall for the majority of the players... overall, an empty tedious experience

House system was good though... shame FF14's devs didnt have the skills to actually make an engine/system like that... but hey... invisible walls.. shitty movement....

I never thought it would happen, but I think I agree with @KHAndAnime for once ... modern MMOs are absolute turds.

I believe they have improved the difficulty wall to make it more accessible to most players.

It's funny because when Wildstar came out everyone was complaining that MMOs were too easy.

This is so true. WoW is too casual etc.

I tried it. I made a character and then pressed finish and it froze. Tried again and it did the same thing. Uninstalled after that.

Played it the first two months when it first came out, don't think I'll go back to it. I did love the art style and the housing system was amazing but everything else was just awful.

I haven't decided, but I'm leaning towards no. The reason is that I tried the game briefly during the beta, and while I enjoyed the concept, and am a real science fiction geek (with a great disappointment with the relative dearth of good science fiction mmos vs. non-SF mmos), I was really turned off by parts of it. For example, I got thoroughly frustrated and mad in the beta because of a section of the game where, in order to progress to another area in the world, you had to do some platforming, and I completely lacked the hand-eye coordination to progress beyond that section. Granted, the game controls probably have improved, but I play MMOs mostly because I don't need to have the best eyesight or coordination or reflexes to enjoy them.

Furthermore, I have found that I get bored too easily with modern MMOs. I hate the end-game in almost all of them, because they tend to be too focused on raiding, with scripted encounters (which, to me, is boring, and turns what used to be a 'game' into an exercise in synchronization and rhythm and military coordination and acting like nothing more than a cog in a machine. I had enough of that way back when I was a senior Everquest cleric in a top-tiered raiding guild (in retrospect, it was more like torture than fun, but I was an addict).

So I almost certainly will skip it.

I think you'd be more of a fan with something like Star Wars: The Old Republic especially with the new expansion pack coming out. I'm almost in the same boat as you. I love MMORPGs but I dislike the traditional endgame content which focuses on raiding. Knights of the Fallen Empire is going to be episodic content that you can play alone or with friends with the first few chapters being available very soon this month. I think Bioware is really stepping up the presentation since it looks way more cinematic and interesting then what we've seen in the past from SWTOR storytelling. But to each his own.

Honestly, I am not a star wars fan. Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed the original trilogy just fine, but I'm not a 'fan'. I read a lot of SF, but when it comes to movies I'm more of a 2001 guy (that was MY Star Wars). Or "Blade Runner". Or most recently, "The Martian" (imho, one of the best SF novels AND movies in recent years). Star Wars wouldn't even make my top 10 list. I just don't find the Star Wars universe to be either believable or compelling, and its themes are too.... fantasy-like. Luke is special because he's part of an elite family -- that's conservative/reactionary to the point of monarchy. That's a typical fantasy trope. And don't even get me started on "The Force", or Darth Vader's 'redemption'.

Not interested. I've started playing Guild Wars 2 now that it's gone f2p. Me and some friends figured it would be fun to play an MMO together for a change.

That why I love it. While the Martian is by far one of my all time favorite books I just love how imaginative and fantasy-like Star Wars can be.

I generally give an MMO more time before I judge it; there is often so much content, and the first few levels tend to hold your hand, so you don't experience the true meat and potatoes until you're a few hours in.

Wildstar is the exception. I just can't do it, man. So boring. Maybe its the fact that the art direction and overall feeling of the game is identical to WoW (it's WoW in space, and that is not an exaggeration). This comparison, by the way, is coming from someone that generally despises MMO comparisons to WoW.

And the whole attack indicators was neat at first, but soon it's just annoying. Dodging enemy attack vectors gets old fast, and lining yours up every single time is tedious at best. And the world is so busy, it looks like it was built by someone with ADD. There's like a million different colors, a billion different things to interact with, and all kinds of craziness going on. It just gets old, overwhelming, and annoying really fast.

I don't think it is a bad game, but I did not find it fun or enjoyable.

I agree with your post, but this isn't WoW in space.

The art direction has similarities, but it ends there. The gameplay is totally different.

The attack indicators are needed later on when you fight lots of mobs and bosses... it can get pretty hectic.

I'd like too but man is the client garbage. It crashed every 10 to 15 minutes. Once the game was running it was fine. It was the install that was the problem. And based one what I've been reading a lot of people are having trouble installing the game. To make it far more annoying I have the DVDs. 3 DVDs full of game data. Its probably around 70% of the install size but the developers have decided that the convenience and speed of installing from the disc is just too much of a good thing for returning customers to have. Its pure digital installation now. Its going to take months to install it at this rate.

And no its not on my end. I would have seen similar problems with other things and I don't. Its only with Wildstar.

It's because everyone is downloading it and the servers can't keep up.
