i was thinking about upgrading to a pentium D because my motherboard didn't support core 2 duo but i saw an id for frys today and it was 150bucks for a X2 4600 plus a motherboard so i was wondering if a 4600 is any good for gaming and if it will last at least 2 years

The x2 4600+ is a good processor, slightly better then a E6300.

It will last quite awhile.

Were you looking at the bundle with the ECS GeForce6100SM motherboard? If so, by all means that's a great bargain. But I remember they had a AMD 5000+ with the same motherboard bundle for $180 too.

Well, the e6300 is much more easy to overclock.

Well, you might luck out and you won't have any problems. ESC just isn't one of the better motherboard manufacturers out there.

I just can't see games requiring C.P.U.'s above AMD's x2 3800 or Intel's e6300, as the minuimum spec, for at least one year, so either way the x2 4600 should last you awhile.roulettethedog
it should last at least 1.5 years as long as you keep upgrading other parts. btw thats seems like a very good deal.

It's not worth getting it now. Not many games support dual core CPU's. Wait for a while. If you MUST get one now, spend the little extra cash on a 4800+ or something a little higher.

Why not just go to a top end Pentium D 960 or a EE edition, should give you ample performance for the near future.

Just because not everyone overclocks does not mean that its not true that the e6300 is much more easy to overclock

If your an overclocker then go for the E6300 but if not then the X2 4600 will suffice
