I'm thinking of getting one to replace my 8800gts g92. I have heard that a 4890 is about the max for a PCI-E 1.0.

No, Heck even the 5870 barely shows any improvement over PCI-E 8x.

According that that article on poweruptech the 5870 will run nearly 100% on a PCIe x4 2.0 which is the same as PCIe 8x 1.0. So the 5850 will have no problem. Apparently we are just now hitting the bandwidth boundary of the old AGP slot???

There was no need to switch to agp when they did.
