I know it has a new combat system and other new things but will it really be that much different in the MMO genre? How many people plan to buy the game?

I'm looking at it closely. The biggest problem I have with the game is that I was an original player of Anarchy Online and it's first 6 months after launch were a complete disaster. Worst MMO launch in history by far. I'm still being blissfully ignorant and waiting for my apology from un-fun-com on that one.

I sure hope it will be. Otherwise I'm gonna give up completely on the MMO genre for a long while seeing how there are no other MMO's out there now or in development that interest me in the slightest.

I don't know if it will be spactacular but has some chances of being "different".That's the only MMO I'm having hopes for.Well, I also have for the world of darkness MMO and "secret world/dark days upon us" but both those will take a long time to be published

It looks good but then I remember that's also on consoles and then the bad taste in my mouth kicks in.

for the past 6+ years nearly every big MMO have said they will have console ports, but only a very few actually go through with it. So hopefully that idea will die quick. I don't see how a console MMO would work either. How would they fix bugs, exploits, add expansions, etc?

The same way PC's do it. Download an expansion or a patch. Both PS3 and 360's have hard drives. The few 360's out there without hard drives simply couldn't play. It's the way Final Fantasy is on the 360 now in requiring a hard drive to play to allieviate said issues.

yea, but I think they learned from that experience.

Not to mention they have been doing small scale beta testing for over half a year now.

I think Age of Conan will be the fantasy-based MMO we have all been waiting for.

Strangely, rare are the MMOs completly "ready" at launch.. there's always a couple of bugs that made it through the beta tests.. You usually need a couple of months to have a real good gaming experience.

It will be different at the very least. MMOs are never "spectacular" at launch. I'm not particularly interested in it myself, though.

Surely you can't compare it to Vangaurd and SWG in later years.... I haven't played AO so I don't know how bad it was but Vangaurd was pushed too early and SWG game mechanics have been changed too often

Lets just put it this way. Two common occurrences for the first 4 to 6 months of anarchy online were:

1. You'd average at best about 2 to 5 frames per second in cities, meaning that navigating walking around a corner and not running face first into the wall would take about 30 seconds or longer each time. Once they did get the frame rate up into the 7 to 12 fps you still had several months of walking around town looking at your feet and looking up once in a while to see where you were at.

2. The forums were filled with people that had there machines screwed up so bad by that game that I think even funcom released a statement saying reformat your entire machine.

These are two of the most problimatic issues they had, beyond that there were many many more. Which is really kind of sad because when it worked the game was pretty darn fun for its time.

I played SWG from the beginning for a couple years, it was not even in the same league as AO for stress factor of "how on earth did they release this unfinished piece of crap" syndrome. Never played Vanguard so I wouldn't know, all I can say for sure is that SWG, everquest, everquest 2, wow, ultima online, City of Heroes, Guild Wars and LOTRO

Continuation of above post as for some reason it's not showing the rest.

< all the games I played from launch forward, have been A+ launches compared to AO.

Pretty much. I plan on trying the game when it launches, but if it doesn't amaze me, I'll be peacin' out on the MMORPG genre for as long as I can. I'm surprised I even have hope for the game, but it just sounds and looks so cool and what I've been waiting for.

I think AO was an extreme example of what typically plagues MMOs upon release. I will be honest; the fact that the same dev is making Age of Conan does worry me a bit, and I certainly wont be buying the game release day (I will wait for player reviews), but I like to feel that the industry as a whole has learned their lesson. Despite this, I feel Age of Conan will be one of the most complete out-of-the-box MMOs released.

MMOs in general are released frequently with a lot of bugs. Remember the first few months of World of Warcraft? Bugs, exploits, not to mention the 20+ minute ques to log into games. But now look at it; its a screaming success. The same applies to other MMOs such as EVE Online, Tabula Rasa, Pirates of the Burning Sea, and others.

And people need to realize that, while the MMO genre is more than ten years old, its hasnt really become the well-established genre it is today until a few years ago. There is still a lot developers need to learn, and I think that as gamers it is our duty to be patient and tolerant of bugs. I don't like it, but so long as developers make the post-release effort to turn a game into what it should be, we should endure a couple months of hardship. I think if we are patient, provide feedback, and do things of that nature the MMO genre will turn into the greatest assortment of games we can play.

I agree with the above poster - to a point. I played WoW on launch and I saw all the bugs and the long wait to get into the game. It bothered me, but not near as much as having to fiddle for hours on end with a screwed up machine just to get back on the internet. There are acceptable things to happen like small bugs and exploits, what happened in AO is not of that caliber. And the fact they charged like $15.00 a month to have to redo your system is absurd. And then when it did get fixed they offered all new subscribers like 90 days free or something stupid.

They never mentioned anything about giving back to all the early subscribers for all the pain they made them pay for. Actually I guess I lied, for all the day one subscribers they delayed payment a little while until you could at least log into the game that would then ruin your system. Not that it helped at all, we were then subjected to months and months of bugs so large you couldn't not notice them even if you turned off your machine and went to sleep they would haunt your dreams because of how bad they were.

Honestly I rant about it so much because it's the biggest up yours any company in the industry has ever done in my mind. And that even includes all the crap EA has pulled in there lifetime. Funcom to this day owes everyone who played that game a huge apology, and when you think big I'm gonna tell you bigger.

I remember people on forums saying things like "yeah I picked up the game today and couldn't wait to get home to install it and play. I got home and installed it, then turned my computer off because I had to have diner with the family and when I went to turn it back on it wouldn't boot".

"Now not only do I not want to play this game, I can't do my homework as the computer is broke and my dads pissed at me".

Anyway, I'll stop ranting as I would go on for days. Gotta just breath.

Funcom "can" make a great game I believe. I also think they "can" make a game that would appear to be great but is a total turd. Which AoC will be, I'm waiting to find out as well.

I have high hopes for AoC but considering its for consoles too I can't help but wonder if it will made less complicated for the console players that have less buttons to press.

I don't expect it to blow me away, but I will most probably play it for a couple months. I'm jonesing for an MMO, and sadly, that seems to be the best one coming out for a while. If only Bioware would hurry on that secret MMO they are working on...

I'm sure as far as stability goes, it'll be quite good. There has been tons of beta testing lately, including this coming weekend.

I'm hoping it will be but, every MMO I've ever played is just an xp grind. Fun for about 5 minutes unless you happen to be obsessive compulsive about leveling up.
