I bought pc parts that include the i5 6600k and gtx 1080 ti and i am a complete noob to the pc gaming scene. Since the i5 6600k is overclockable, i am guessing that it won't bottleneck the gtx 1080 ti at the correct clock speed? If so, then at what speed should I overclock the i5 6600k to make sure that it doesn't bottleneck the gtx 1080 ti, if I want my pc to almost match the same performance as another pc that uses the most powerful cpu paired with a gtx 1080 ti, assuming that I only use my pc for gaming? Also, how long will the i5 6600k last me in the future without bottlenecking, if i only use it for gaming?

The more games utilizes 8 threads you can encounter slight bottlenecking. The higher the resolution the more gpu bound you become. Meaning cpu becomes less of an issue.

@04dcarraher: I am planning to game on 1440p because I want to achieve higher than 100 fps on ultra settings. Are there any games that utilize 8 threads or will there be in future?

@melis002:

There are quite a few games nowadays that can use eight threads. Some do it well others not so much. In the future we can expect more. Right now and for awhile yet your i5 6600 will be ok.

Once you start seeing 100% cpu usage and gpu usage dip into 90's percentage wise with multiple titles then it time to change the cpu.

@04dcarraher: I'm just concerned that there could be more games in the future that utilize 8 threads because of AMD leveling the playing field in the cpu market, since all of the Ryzen cpu's have 8 threads and are relatively cheaper than Intel.

That goes from game to game, and should not be the definitive factor of upgrading. I know for a fact my 4790k will fall in love with the 1080ti it will be a match made in heaven.

And by the way don't overclock..... it's not worth the 5 frames per second max. It"s just a number with higher temps and thermal throttle.

@Travis_Odell:

Once you start seeing those usage issues as common place its a good indicator of a bottleneck.

Overclocking can yield more than a 5 fps difference.Especially when a game relies on single thread performance.

As long as you have proper cooling, temps and throttling is not an issue.

@04dcarraher: You will know what the bottleneck is when the frame rate hits under 60fps. However that could be a shit port, all my other games work just fine and this one sucks i must upgrade my cpu cooler, my overclock is super clocked. My fans must be at the highest, my memory must be melting, my harddrive must be at it's fucking peek. My eyes are rolling into the back of my head lol.

@Travis_Odell:

You will know if your bottlencking if tests are done with a stronger cpu or one that has more threads is able to drive the gpu to higher framerates.... dipping below 60 fps is not tell all be all neither if you have 120/144hz screen you will see it long before you hit 60fps. But yea one game not performing well can be poor coding and it can also be because its cpu needs are higher than cpu that you have can tackle. any i5 from haswell onward has some life in them still but we are nearing a hardware/software transition as we did back in 2008/2009 where more cores and threads are needed for optimal results.

It's always going to bottleneck a bit in some games if you are looking for high framerates(100+) regardless of OC. I'd try to get a 4.5ghz oc, that will minimize it a lot.

You will be just fine. I still stand by don't overclock it's good enough as is. And if your overclocking your not gaming.

@melis002: I run a 1080ti and i5 6600k, in bf1 cpu is 100%, gpu is doing 70-90%, ghost recon wildlands cpu is 100% and gpu does 50-80%

My i5 is running at 4.5GHz 1.290 vcore.

Yea it's pretty hard to get bottlenecked, unless you're shooting for extra FPS past 100+.
