I just noticed that EA games are on Steam now.

I always thought EA wants their EA Online store to be like steam, or at least to be a store to compete Steam.

but I guess they gave up and surrender to steam.

my question is "When will blizzard games be up on steam?"

Blizzard, I believe, also opened the online store to download the games and set up accounts , etc.

but I don't know if Blizzard can keep being stubborn and deny that putting their games on steam is not productive.

Its bound to happen.

Digital Distribution is the future

And steam happens to be the most popular DD platform.

It could happen, but then again, maybe not. Blizzard already offers digital downloads from their store, though I don't know how good it is.

I certainly hope they do, but in all honesty I don't know if it will happen. Anyways its only a matter of time until 90% of good PC games are available through steam... its getting closer and closer with each passing month.

He didn't say he hoped Steam to have a monopoly, he said he hoped Blizzard games arrived on Steam. And they don't have a monopoly, there is Direct2Drive.

I doubt it. Steam takes a not insignificant chunk of the profit. Some are willing to give this up for the exposure that Steam gets them and to not have to worry about the distribution themselves. Blizzard is the last PC developer that needs exposure, and Blizzard seems to have gotten their act together with their own digital distribution. I think maybe part of the reason EA is doing this is because of all of the people that griped about their current online validations methods (Spore). Also, EA's own digital distribution had rather horrible policies. I'm not sure why they wouldn't simply change them instead of going to Steam, but then they're EA and I can't say I necessarily understand everything they do, successful company or not. Anyway, Blizzard in a lot of ways makes me think of Nintendo. While they've stuck to a few core franchises for many years now, they've always been trailblazers within the genres of games that they do. Everyone else does what Blizzard does, not the other way around. For some reason I can't really see it happening any time soon. I'm just not sure what they would really get out of it. Maybe years from now they will, but not now. I could be wrong.

I read in an article saying that Blizzard will keep doing their own digital distribution, but probably sooner or later. Starcraft 2 on Steam would be cool though.

Well steam works where when YOU use it... you want AS MANY games as possible on it. The more you have, the service simply becomes more and more convenient and practical.

And in the age of the internet, its practically impossible (actually I'll just say it IS impossible) for steam to be the only DDS out there. Certainly its the only really good one of its kind (although D2D isn't that far behind in new games released) that has a great company backing it up (valve) with a great set of expanding tools. In fact there are 2 DDS services out now that work DIFFERENTLY than steam that still work well. Take Gametap which is a service that gives you access to a lot of game... and GoG which specifically caters to cheap good quality old games and is founded by another company I really like (Projekt CD.. aka developers of Witcher).

And how can you really dislike steam and valve? They've been on the forefront of the push towards DDS, while at the same time being a company that really shows dedication to their playerbase and craft. Valve has spent the last 4-5 years constantly improving and working on steam, and its only been the last year or so that their work is really starting to show off and a lot of companies are jumping on the bandwagon.

You didn't mention Stardock's Impulse service, so I have to give it a shoutout. It doesn't have nearly the selection that Steam does yet, but it's pretty nice. (Stardock has done digital distribution for quite a while, but they fairly recently rolled it over to their new Impulse software.) Of course, Steam is the established name, the games exclusive to Stardock are decidedly more niche than the ones that got everyone using Steam in the first place, and a lot of the bigger name games they have are also on Steam, so they have an uphill battle if they hope to get anywhere near Steam in terms of users.

They have a monopoly on the download yes. But its not like Valve is getting control over the games, the developers are responsible for the upkeep of the games you bought through steam. Honestly I like the one stop shopping. And steam give you REALLY good deals, like right now STALKER for 5 bucks.

Steam is great for weekend deals, and things like Stalker for five bucks. The problem is full priced games (new releases especially) but as long as it remains optionally, its fine. I mean paying $50 for a new release on steam, when you can get the box version for the exact same price is not cool, but until the box disapears you can't really complain, but it seems ppl want that to happen, and want steam to be standard. With most boxed games, you can sell it after your done with it and get enough to buy another older release, but with steam you are stuck with your games until you or steam bites the bucket.

I think the reason why games still cost $50 on Steam because they need to pay for their own bandwidth on it. Why do you think games are even taken off once in a while? :P Bandwidth aint free nor cheap!

Nor are game boxes and DVD's. I would say digital distribution would be far cheaper because you don't have to make the box, burn a DVD, and then ship across the world and still I often find games at my local store cheaper than steam.

Perhaps the ONLY thing about steam I don't like is how they don't at least slightly reduce the price compared to retail outlets. There is quite a bit larger profit margin for DDS compared to brick and mortar companies. Sure bandwidth, creating steam, having people broker the contracts between valve and other companies takes money... but its nothing to creating CD's, boxes, manuals, shipping them to stores, and giving the stores a pretty huge cut (part of which goes to stocking, store rent, taxes and employee salary).

On the plus side they give awesome deals as long as you are patient. $5 for STALKER FTW!

BW IS cheap. Delivering a 4GB game one time, cost pennies. Compare that to shipping, creating the box, manual, and printing cds...

I'm sure that a large part of EA's choice to put their games on Steam is their current financial situation. Ie: Not good. They are laying off 10% of their employees after all. So the more avenues they have to make money, the better. Blizzard on the other hand is rolling in money from WoW subscriptions still. So I doubt we'll see Blizzard games on Steam any time soon.

Really?! Just PENNIES?! Then why are they charging $50?! Do they at least come with a PDF manual with color? Okay, but how much bandwidth cost to run a server for a video game? If not so much then I wonder why MMOs still have monthly fees. :|

I'd love a monopoly that sells games for 90% off on special weekends. Half-life for 98 cents. Stalker for $5. I love steam, but it's also nice to have a box set now and then.

I expect they will soon, Blizard arn't that concerned about profits as WOW brings in enough but if they ever want to raise quick funds they can always stick thier back catalogue on steam for a low price and it wouldn't cost them anything. I know Blizzard prefer to do things solo but Valve isn't a company that would intefer they'ld just allow them to use their distrobution platform for a fewf cents per game.

So does EA but they still put their stuff on there. Hopefully publishers see the sales they're getting on steam and decide to distribute their new stuff in Europe. I heard there was talk about movies and music a while ago, maybe when they've got these new publishers fully on board and world wide then they can move on to new medai, it should be easy for them too as they have already have conections with Activision whose parent company also owns Universal Music, as long as thier bad history dosn't hold them back.

Costs are quite often set by the companies that sell over steam. They set prices high so it dosn't drive down disk sales and upset other retailers, not a good thing to do as they have other platforms that they make gmaes for and have to sell through them but also because a physical box and disk in a highstreet store or major online retailer is valuble as marketing, steam only atracts gamers.

Blizzard is not EA. Blizzard isn't struggling financially in the way EA is as far as I know. Also, EAs downloader by all accounts is garbage. I've never heard anything about Blizzards pro or con, so I don't know.

They can't, because it'd run the risk of pissing off said brick and mortar people, who still make up a decent majority of the sales over time. at least traditionally - i have a feeling things like this UT3 sale combined with its lower sales in the past are breaking the paradigm.

I don't care blizzard comes to Steam or not. All that matters to me is who's giving my game at cheapest price! I didn't buy GTA IV off the Steam ($50) because in my country retail price was $10. :P At the end of the day I must profit.

I really like steam, and it's nice having all of my games managed by one single piece of software... rather than having different online game services for different games (EA download manager, Impulse, Steam, D2D, etc.) And I really like how steam works right now, and how they seem to pay attention to the customers, but...

If all games hit steam there will be no competition, and in the future (probably not as far away as we think) digital distribution may be the only way of getting games. Imagine if the only place to buy videogames was a single store. They would be like the cable company.

As far as I'm concerned, Valve is a highly responsible company. If they continue to operate by there tradition of fondness and pure dedicated, Steam is a thriving service that simplifies PC Gaming. In other words, it's brilliant.

Apparently all of you who keep saying that Blizzard won't put their games on Steam due to their own digital distribution method either are not aware or ignore the fact that they have WoW on D2D. Fact of the matter is that Valve is really only missing three major pubs; Lucas, Microsoft, and Blizzard. Nobody EVER thought EA would arrive and so I don't think we should say that these three won't join Steam.

Obviously there is some reason that their subscription-based game is the only game they currently distribute digitally through third party channels.

[QUOTE="FelipeInside"][QUOTE="Rotinaj32"]I certainly hope they do, but in all honesty I don't know if it will happen. Anyways its only a matter of time until 90% of good PC games are available through steam... its getting closer and closer with each passing month. -CheeseEater-
WHY...WHY do you want this to happen? I don't want one company having the monopoly of all downloads....

As far as I'm concerned, Valve is a highly responsible company. If they continue to operate by there tradition of fondness and pure dedicated, Steam is a thriving service that simplifies PC Gaming. In other words, it's brilliant.

Valve I like... Steam I hate. If I have to choose between a system like Steam to get my games or a company like direct2drive, I will go to D2D every time. No front-end BS just to get and play my games.
