Will developers force DX10 and DX10 cards on buyers soon?

Something I've been wondering about. With Direct X 10 has there been any talk about developers forcing the issue with it by designing games around it (forcing those without DX10 cards to buy new cards that will cost a lot) or have developers come out and say they won't be making a forced jump for some time? Cause if things are going to be moving in that direction I rather not waste money on a somewhat decent card now if it is going to be worthless if developers decided to embrace DX10 without any concern for buyers (don't have much knowledge or confidence in developers to know if they will or won't do that). Thanks.

It will be a few years before its a must to have a dx10 card, for now you don't have to worry about it games like Crysis and so on that use DX10 can still be played on Xp using DX9.

DX10 is in it's very early stages, don't expect it to be mandatory for at least a few more years (2-3).

If you mean 5 years soon then yes....in all truth by the time you need to upgrade everythign will be DX 10 so relax. All our systems hit that wall when nothing but a new system is needed to keep up with even the most basic of computing. I wouldn't worry about it though...all the hype going on now hasn't really been that amazing. Great visuals no doubt but nothing that screams "upgrade or lose out!"

By the end of the year you wont "need" a DX10 card but you sure as hell are going to "want" one.... Stop trying to fight evolution guys, some of us want more realism in our games.

It's not about fighting evolution...it's about not spending $600 on a new card for features that few games will really use. We've all been through the DX hype machine before and most know you NEVER buy first generation cards of new DX features anyhow. The smart thing to do is wait at least till the 2nd generation of DX 10 cards hit next year.

K, keep playing with your DX9 card for 5 years, then. (A touch bit of a long time dont you think?) I will play Crysis and SC and others THIS year the way they are meant to be played. Like I said, want vs need.

I've heard it all before with the intro of pixel shaders and what not in the the past...a handful of games keep their promise to use the features and use them well. The rest drop the ball with poor optimizations, poor use of advance features, and wasted potential. Look how long it took for HDR to catch on and look how half baked MANY games use it.

I'm a PC gamer by and large and will score a DX 10 card late next year at the earliest once a solid generation of DX 10 cards has passed...Crysis dropped off my radar when I saw the gameplay footage. I'll wait without worry...nothing out now has made me see the benefits of being an early adopter for a new DX version...It's great to see more realistic lighting and shadows but...meh. The REALLY interesting stuff isn't shipping for some time anyhow.

Plus in all truth if you want to play Crysis the way it's REALLY meant to be played you'll wait till after the game ships to buy a system or DX 10 card :P

Didn't say they were junk...but I'd still rather wait till the next generation of DX cards before I take the leap given that by then ( a year away is not long to wait) they'll be better at DX games and still smoke the current titles out.

win/win...it's not like I'm hurting at the moment for performance by any means. If I was still on say a 9800pro or something then I'd buy a DX 10 card right now without hesitation.

Besides the only game taking up my time now is WoW and ARMA.

Wrong.

Exactly. Apparently one of the Crysis developers play tested the game on his home rig with a single 7800 GT at maxed settings and it ran fine. That's the "unoptimized" version of the game on top of it. So any half decent rig with a 7 series card will run crysis fine. Maybe not at completely maxed settings, but it will still run and look good.

Personally, I'm with those of the opinion that game play is more important that a few better lights and shadows. By a new comp, and OS for some lights and shadows?! That's just stupid. Well, unless you're the type who can light his cigars with 100 dollar bills. :P

Ha ha! Lucky you! I can't afford to make a pay-phone call most of the time, never mind lighting cigars with 100 dollar bills! (for that matter, I can't afford to buy a cigar!) :P

Yes of course eventually. That's how technology evolves. If manufacturers didn't and always catered to older systems we'd still have EGA graphics... One thing you must learn from any hobby that is technology based is you must adapt or be left behind.
