I've been wondering, will an HD4870 make much of a difference on a 20" monitor at 1680x1050 over an HD485 to justify $100 more it costs.

It's overall performance is much better than the HD4850, so yeah.

It'll make Crysis actually playable with all settings on "Very High" (so long as you have a fast CPU as well).

If you don't acually give two ***** about Crysis, then save your cash and go for the HD4850.

No, it will NOT make an appreciable difference in all games except those named Crysis. The only difference between the two in 99% of games at that resolution will be perhaps cranking the AA/AF higher. I have personally tested the HD4850 and HD4870 vs the 8800GTS 640mb at that resolution. An HD4870 cannot handle Crysis at Very High (whilst maintaining a realistically playable framerate). On an e6600 @ 3.0Ghz along with an overclocked HD4870 I pulled an average of 36 or so FPS on high, no AA, at 1680x1050. Expect an HD4850 to match about 75% of that performance in crysis. Most other games at that resolution are a wash until you crank the AA/AF which beyond 4x/8x doesn't really matter imo :) Go for the HD4850 and save some dough. You'll have $100 more to spend on the next wave of tech ;)

Cool, I was considering using some of the money to get a better mobo with two PCIE 2.0 slots so I can crossifire in a few months.

Crossfire HD 4870 on my system with a Q9300 at stock 2.5GHz with 4GB DDR3 RAM on a sysem with 2 PCI Express x16 2.0 lanes on Crysis on Very High is usually above 20fps (about 23ish fps), in some spots it can jump up to 28-30fps and in even other spots 35fps. In very intense action it can drop down to about 15-18fps. They really need to optimize that game for Crossfire and ATI's shaders.

Yeah. I think Crysis is even more cruel to Crossfire than a single GPU setup. It really sucks. But then again, Crysis is overrated. Sure, it's beautiful but it's not "out of this world." I've been playing Crysis for the visual eye candy, lol. Not so much the gameplay or story.

I get more fps than that at the same settings as yours with only a single 4870

as long new game with eye candy run better then 280GTX tri sli with 4870x2 il be at peace anyway at thet ime if ot he month august lot of people said wait for nehalem. it gonna worth it.... i hope so...?
speaking off right now i got a dinosaur's :P a 7600GT XXX edition. 1280x1024. im thinking to go to the new level of gaming 1920x1200 : 4870x2 : and nehalem. if it worth it much
off topic tough. just saying so cause no nvidia sli chipset that is sold-apart from intel motherboard the NF200 . if it work well on the motherboard witn nehalem vs ati : ati could not aim a better moment to reach top 4870x2 + nehalem & x58 motherboard
is said to definitely win any. current setup for less money. by lot hmm
280GTX was new of few month and yet ? dieing techonlogy grow fast.

Faster CPU clock alone may be the culprit, since Crysis doesn't scale well with Crossfire. I could be having a problem though, I'll have to look into it.

yeah marloo crysis don't scale well with crossfire. really not well. cause like poeple said 2x4870 or R700 defeat 3-way sli 280GTX also for less money. on 1920x1200
because R700 alone perform better then 280GTX SLI in most of game so .

Yeah I took a look into it, one HD 4870 is actually faster in Crysis at lower resolutions, and the difference between one card and Crossfire at 1920x1200 was only a few frames. They really need to tighten up the Crossfire performance in Crysis, all other games scale well though. Also this is demo performance, not v1.2, so that may also affect my performance.

Well, HD4870x2 promises to scale A LOT better than Crossfire and it also promises to be microstutter-free. At this point, I'm definitely going to switch over to HD4870x2. It's the best bang for your buck for what it can do. We're talking high resolution, no microstuttering, high framerate for a single GPU slot setup, and unbeatable price compared to GTX280 SLi or 3-way SLi. I made up my mind. ;)

Off-topic: Marc, I'm at 4.0ghz now. :)

Since this is somewhat on topic: Can anyone tell me if an HD4850 will outperform a 9800GTX if the HD4850 is at 1440x900 resolution and the 9800GTX is at 1680x1050?

No. HD4850 ~ 9800GTX+ (About equal to, give or take). GTX 260 > 9800GTX+/HD4850.

HD4850 = 9800GTX+ < GTX 260 < HD4870 < GTX 280 < HD4870X2

The 4870 suffers from near unacceptable power consumption though, IMO.
