First off, I am not into desktops anymore so please try not to jump to conclusions about building a PC or AW are overpriced.  AW desktops are overpriced but there are no other 18inch dual card solutions outside of Sager that provide the performance I like.  I'm a fan of mobile technology and know it's a bigger price to pay than a desktop.  However, please keep in mind that at the enthusiast notebook level, the enthusiast desktop level, while more powerful, is also using that power on many more pixels on multiple displays.  The community I am involved with online is heavily into overclocking.  While I haven't overclocked my cards yet, I have unlocked and flashed a custom Vbios to basically have my cards running at a mild overclock and other minor tweaks.  Specs:

Alienware 18

4900mq CPU (Haswell 2.8ghz base and 4.0 turbo boost).

780m SLI (1536 cores just like the desktop 680 but slightly underclocked). My unlocked Vbios mitigated much of that.

16gig ram

18.4inch PLS 1900x1080p screen.

My stock 3dmark 11 is 12,100 (13,900 OC) overall and 15,150 GPU stock (17,000 OC) so I know it's a beast of a machine now.  However, I am just curious as to when I will likely need to upgrade to keep in line with console ports.  Maxwell is going to be 28nm then 22nm so the power draw TDP will be lower and likely just a plug and play option for this machine.  For those unaware, outside of a new CPU socket, the CPU and GPU on AW systems are easily and highly upgradable.  There are people running the 780s in the last gen M18x R1 and R2.  The main problem with the 780s in my rig is that the 330watt PSU is the bottleneck as there is a lot of overclocking ability but after a certain point, only a PSU mod (basically 2 330watt PSUs) can overcome it.  However, I digress...

Taking Maxwell out of the picture, if I leave this rig as is, how long can I game at 1080p with this system.  It's pretty amazing playing Crysis 3 maxed out on a freaking notebook.  While I love desktops, I just am not into building them anymore and do like the semi-mobility of having my machine on the go when traveling or just moving throughout my own place or to take to a cafe for awhile.

Thanks

You will be fine for next gen games. You have a very good gaming Laptop. However, I will recommend against overclocking anything in your laptop. All the components are really tight together and have little room to breathe, meaning there's a high chance for overheating. Your laptop is powerful enough to handle everything at stock speeds. If you do decide to overclock however, monitor your temps closely, since you have a high risk of frying everything inside.

A damn fine (and bloody huge) laptop, I imagine you'll do quite well for at least the next 2-3 years, with decent performance for another 2 after that. I don't think anyone can recommend OCing a laptop though. Damned expensive thing to break after you've voided the warranty. And as mentioned the heat problems would be very rough on a laptop.
