Hey guys, so I have a Q6600 OC'ed to 3GhZ and I'm planning to get an HD 6950 to play the upcoming Battlefield on High settings and I was wondering, will my CPU be a bottleneck? I'm using a 4870 1 Gig right now and I get bad framerates even on low settings oon BF3 Beta.Oh and also is it worth the upgrade from a 4870? Thanks alot.

BTW I game at 1680 x 1050

You'll be fine, although once you get past 6000 series mid range cards in the next several months I would imagine the q6600 will start to show its age.

i doubt it, but at that level of card a newer cpu may demonstrate its benefits better... but oh well.

In some games, the CPU may bottleneck a 6950, but most will be fine. My CPU bottlenecks my GPU in BC2. Also in BF3, Caspian Border. 100% CPU usage with like 50% GPU usage (@1440x900), but this is not the best example, as it was Beta.

i can't see how a q6600 will bottleneck a hd 6950 and i certainly can't see it a q9505 bottlenecking a gtx460

i mean this article proves a hd5850 won't bottleneck an i3 530

Nope you'll be fine I even have a Q9300 with a gtx 460 1gb model and 8gb of ram and every game I play at high settings runs super smooth!

Ya I mean Ive had Athlon X2 6000 with two 8800GT's running BF BC2 and performance was just fine, But a Q9505 (let alone at 3.6 ghz) bottlenecking a GTX 460 come on. There is only two things that can be happening defective hardware or its in your head thinking its a bottleneck.

Lol that's really weird. I'm currently running a stock Q6600 with one of the original 4870's that only has 512mb of memory on them. I also play at 1680 x 1050, and the beta runs at a solid 40 - 60 fps on low settings for me. Having said that, I'm building my new beast in the next 2 weeks so I can run the game at high/ultra ;)

I have a q6600 and upgraded from a 5770 to a 6970. At stock, my cpu was working at 100% on the bf3 beta while my gpu was only pulling around 70%. After an overclock to 3ghz via bsel mod, it now runs at nearly 100%. So yes, he will still be bottlenecked at that res with a 6950 but only slightly whereas at stock, the card's performance would severely diminish. I also play at 1680 x 1050.

I have your exact setup, Q6600 at 3GHZ and a 6950 , works brilliantly.

I went from a 5770 which had framerate issues in BF3 ... justr wasnt good enough, now with the 6950 I dont see any of that, the game is as smooth as butter. BUT.... if you want ULTRA .... we will have no idea how that will run yet. but High looks great.

The difference isnt huge, but i can definitely confirm that a stock q6600 will bottleneck that GPU slightly. Overclocking my Q6600 to about 3.2 Ghz made quite a noticeable improvement in DX 11 games while lowering my CPU utilization.

still a q6600 is a lot stronger than an i3 530 and that doesn't bottleneck a hd 5850, the hd 6950 is stronger than the hd 5850 though. The fact that it happens with battlefield 3 is because is so taxing on the cpu because of the poor optimization. (and also bad company 2) The outcome is the same though but overall i wouldn't call this a bottleneck because this doesn't occur this much with other games. BC2 and BF3 don't do such spectacular things in the cpu department that it needs that much cpu power. Gta IV is also a great example, it uses too much cpu for what it does.

Just telling you what I found. It's not a big bottleneck, and really. sometimes it sways back the other way. In BC2, CPU usages is usually 80-100% whereas my GPU usage is usually in the 80% range.

Are you sure? I'm getting 22 fps in GTA IV, 25 fps in Crysis, and 16-30 fps in Witcher 2 with a stock Q6600 and 6950.

Fully Utilizing a CPU and bad optimization are two differen't things. PC gamers want games to push their rigs, but once games do just that, they start calling bad optimization.

that must be impossible i got 40 fps with my old i3 530 and hd 5870 (that's basically the same as a hd 6950 especially for dx10)

you can't compare 2 hd 6970 with a single hd 6950 Besides, that i7-920 is the weakest i7 desktop cpu (or one of the weakest)
