Will pc games every use blu-ray for games as a standard?

I'm sure there's going to be a few HD-DVD/Blu-Ray games, just so they can advertise as "too big to fit on standard DVDs". However it's definitely not going to be more than just a few... PC gaming is going to be 100% digital distribution within 5yrs (we're pretty much there already) for new games. SuperBeast

PC games don't need Bluray and I doubt they ever will.

Unlike console games that run off the disc. PC games run off the HD. You just need the disc in the drive to prove your copy of the game is legit.

Of course the devs/publishers will always offer a physical copy of the game.... That doesn't mean they will be on shelves though.   Matrix for example has packages that offer both the digital distribution and a physical cd/dvd sent to your house for $10 extra.  Pretty much every single new game coming out these days is available for download, while fewer and fewer games are getting put on the shelves.    Like it or not, digital distribution IS the future of gaming.

Actually, some games have come out already on multiple DVDs, I wouldn't mind Blu-Ray at all.GodLovesDead

Not in the near future . That much is certain. First blu-ray has to become the standard and it's not sure it'll ever come to that.

I 50 gb game could still be shipped on regular DVDs because it doesn't matter how many there are, since it's installed on the computer's harddrive and then only one disc is needed to play (if any). 

Not for a few more years, I'd say.

Really, how many Blu-Ray drives are out there in PCs? I'd say that games won't start shipping on Blu-Ray until at least half of computer have that drive for it.  And of course, it will depend on the size of the game.

1 blu-ray disk only has the same capacity as 3-4 DVD's anyway. Gog

I think i read that Crysis requires 6 gigs on the hard drive. It's also in the developers best interest to maintain the size of the games or we will experience some really long load times. Basically what takes up the most space in games is the audio so I don't see Pc games coming on either bluray or hddvd anytime soon.

Agreed. I also like having my hard copy. I have never bought a game that I had to download. Like my Half Life 2 and Episode 1, they are hard copies. I don't want to download my games off steam. The only reason steam is even installed on my PC, is because I have to in order to play HL2 and E1. Here is just one example of why I like having a hard copy. I move to the country where there is no internat accessand I had a serious crash and had to reformat. Now I don't have my games to play anymore. Now I know somebody will say "you should have burnt it to disk", but wouldn't that defeat the purpose of downloading in the first place? I mean the whole reason for downloading is so you don't have them hard copies taking up space. Or they will say "get a external HDD". Well to that I say, I plan to get a nice big external HDD, but not for games, it will be for movies, photos, music and things like that. Things that can't be replaced (talking photos, not the movies and music), a game can always be bought again.

I prefer digital downloads without having the need to go to the store. i wish all games were downloadable since I care nothing for the useless box art that just takes up space. I know people without the internet will get the hard copies but it will be nice if all games had an option to download or get a hard copy.

That could be the direction games are going. EA is now releasing all their games as downloadable

The game Two Worlds comes on 2 DVD's I have heard...to me that says we will see more and more games requiring 2 or more DVD's withing a year or two.  When games start to require 3 or more...will will deffinetly have to start the migration to a larger format.  It doesn't matter about the HD's...what matters is it starts to cost publishers more money to package software when it takes multiple dvd's and bulkier cases and packaging.dnuggs40

Oh I just checked it out...you are right...the game is only one DVD...but the special edition also has a "making of" DVD.  Doesn't really count though :P

Hard copies of games will NEVER dissapear. There will always be Collector's editions with fancy boxes and there will always be collectors to buy them. Also, consider the fact that even if you can download the games off Steam or EA Downloader. If you like those games you will still need to back them up un BluRay or whatever. HDDVD or BluRay Games are also sure to come. Let's consider HD monitors in a year or two and games will have high resolution cinematics. A game will most likely fit on a HDDVD or a Blu Ray. And they will also become cheaper. Remember when the first DVD's came out.. their prices were extreme and not everyone could afford one. But now a blank DVD is cheaper than a 650 MB CD. 

Some people can't afford a high broadband connection to the net and imagine the power bill for the month when you download a 30 GB's game off the web with a 100 kbps connection. People will find it cheaper to go to the store.

Heck yeah, there were games way, way back like Maabus that took 7 CDs (to be on the safe side, let's say just over the size of one single-sided DVD... but back before DVDs were even an idea) before it was common for most folks to even own a CD-ROM drive on their computers. I've never bought a game digitally, and simply don't want and do not foresee myself ever doing so in the future. I see folks that do such things as being suckers (for example, I can get most things cheaper at my local BestBuy or CompUSA than on direct2drive or steam... plus, I physically have a cd/dvd + manual.) In addition, I can just go out and buy something instead of waiting an hour or more (even with a good connection) in half the time or more.

I look at digital distribution and episodic content and just wonder what the heck folks are thinking when they support it. I can only imagine they live rurally out in the middle of nowhere, or else live outside the US where releases may come late or something.

edit: just mentioned games that came out with many CDs before CDs were generally available because these days computers with blu-ray drives are about as rare as up-to-date computers without DVD drives are these days, if that makes sense.
