i dunno much about the hype the sims was getting back in 2001 and 2002, because at that time all i had was my laptop which couldn't very well handle a lot of the newer games, but weren't we basically really, really excited about the sims back then? and by 'we,' i mean hardcore pc gamers? but now, the sims is a target of so much ridicule, cuz all the girls that were playing barbie dress-up games took over that franchise and started making their dream houses and designing pretty dresses and stuff.

we seem to be pretty stoked about spore, but i can totally see it going the down the same path as the sims. the casual gamers will create cutesy little critters, and they'll fluff them up and make pretty houses for them and dress them up in human skin (wait, is that part of the game?). anyway, what do you think? will we get on our high horses in 2010 and ridicule it like we do the sims franchise now?

Personally, I think the original Sims was pretty great.

I bought it and it gave me a unique and pretty damn enjoyable experience while it lasted.

I think it became a source of ridicule because, even though there are about ten good hours in the game (and little more, no matter how much junk you have), expansion after expansion kept on coming out in classic EA style, and people kept buying them. Over and over again, more and more. People kept buying it.

Prolonging a ten hour game for years by buying expansion after expansion that adds crap. That's why I think it became an object of ridicule. It was like a persistent bad guy in a hollywood movie, it just wouldn't die.

Spore, well, Spore looks to me like more or less the same thing - a unique and pretty damn enjoyable looking game.... while it lasts.

If Maxis/EA give the game quality content enough to give it a prolonged lifespan, or just let it die when its time is up, I don't think Spore will become another Sims.

But if in 2012 we're eagerly anticipating Spore's seventh expansion, which adds some more ****ing potted plants, then I think it will very deservedly become another Sims.

well, i don't disagree with your assessment of the sims. i really liked it too, and i was grinding away to get my guy to the top of his career ladder. and then it was like, umm...what da **** now?

anyway, if spore is half the success the sims is, then i think it'll get its share of expansions. it's built for tons and tons of expansions - it's so obvious that it's almost insulting.

Well, I'm excited for it, but it alone.

Not for Spore: Extra Buildings, or Spore: Buty this Expansion.

I can see Spore reaching the level of popularity of the Sims easily. It seems like it will be one of those games almost anyone can pick up and create something in, and share with people that they would never play other games with. I mean, who doesn't like the idea of creating a virtual creature out of pretty much a limitless toolset?

That's quite a compliment, comparing me with mfsa. Thanks.

But no, I'm not him.

I really think the premise is awesome for spore, but the gameplay looks kind of stale from what I've seen. Definitely not a hardcore-gamer's game.

personally i don't think spore will go the same way as the sims.

i mean take GTA for example i still go onto vice city and have hours of fun when i'm not really actually doin... anythin like i just go round blow up stuff shoot ppls heads off :) ect and not do ****.

while spore's free-play is even greater because there just about nothing you can't do in it. but yes i have to agree it is set up for a ton of expansion packs, probs even more than the sims:shock:!!!dun dah daa!!!

It is one of our few chances of defeating GTA: IV for GOTY

Spore is going to be bigger than Ben Hur.

I want to play Spore as much as I wanted to play Sims back in the day. Not too much...

And I think it will sell loads and loads of copies (despite EA forcing their copy protection down our throats), it'll probably have 20 expansions too. So we'll basically have the Sims, WoW and Spore in top 20 positions over best-selling titles of 2009.

Thing is, The Sims' sales include expansions too, which really fudges the numbers. I bet the original Sims has only sold about 14 or 15 million at the most, and most of the rest of the numbers are made by up the fact that most of those 14 million people will go on to buy 3 or 4 expansions each.

Spore will never hit 70m unless it uses a similar expansion model, but I suspect the vanilla game will outsell the vanilla Sims over both systems, given that Spore is also coming to the Wii.

It's never hitting 70 million, though.

im not sure it will go down the same path. An expansion for spore wouldn't quite be the same as a sims expansion. First of all, the sims only had people that u couldn't really customize all that much...I mean a person is only so unique. Spore has creatures that users can spends weeks making and still not scratch the surface of what is possible. On top of that, they can also make their own vehicles, city buildings, spacecraft, and even music. And it is all viewable and downloadable. So in a way, the users are making their own expansions amongst each other.

It already offers so much, so what would an expansion contain? A new stove and some new dresses for your creatures to use? They may contain the same small things like new body/building parts, but unlike in Sims, if u got a new shirt...a shirt is a shirt, no matter how you wear it. In Spore, new parts that can be tweaked and shared seem to be a lot more versatile.

"Casuals"? HArdcore gamers cant like making houses and families aswell? it was a freaking family simulator .. what did you want from it? bad ass houses with guns ? .... thats a very immature outlook on the Game.

Spore has fighting, spore allows you to create both cute and badass creatures, just because its a life simulator doesnt mean its anything likethe sims.

I honestly cant comprehend how you link cute with casual only, what is Mario? or any of the major platformers? what is littlebigplanet? What is World of Warcraft?

I cant possible comprehend how you came to this conclusion? Invaded by barbie girls? so woman like Sims? I dont care... so do I.
