I was thinking of getting a 280 or 290 series card but was told to wait til the next gen cards are out and the older ones are cheaper.Pvt_r3dI havn't seen the future but my estemate is that the price will not drop so mutch on the gtx2xx cards in a near future. This is based on many diffrent factors. (A) The stock on the gtx2xx cards is very thin. (B) Nvidia has stopped most production of the gtx2xx (if not all.) (C) Even tho the HD5xxx kicks the gtx2xx cards by quite a big margin in all aspects Nvidia still keeps the cards high priced. (D) Fermi (GF100) has no products directly in the performance segment of the gtx28x cards and will not be compeating there since it will most likely be much more expencive due to reports of very low yeld and the expencive cost of the GPU chip. (E) As a indirect factor of "(D)" the demand of gtx2xx cards will still be quite high even when the GTX470 and GTX480 is released, since many people still want a Nvidia card no matter the cost. (F) Demand and amount of chips alivalable wont affect the price to a mutch better situation than what we have today on the gtx2xx cards, but the performance of the gtx2xx cards will some time haveto make it either obsolete or adjusted but thats not in a near future.
Ayo forget the 285 and the 295. When the next gen cards come out, pick up the 5870. The MSRP for the 5870 is around $400 right now, when the new Nvidia cards come out, the 5870s will receive a pretty substantial drop in price.mr-sheep
I agree with this and it's what i'm doing. A 5870 will last you years.
I was thinking of getting a 280 or 290 series card but was told to wait til the next gen cards are out and the older ones are cheaper.Pvt_r3dIf you can find a new GTX 280 (hard to find now and if you do, they tend to be WAY overpriced) it's an alright card. The GTX 275 is the better, younger brother of the GTX 280. It costs a bit more, but it runs a bit better. The GTX 285 is still a pretty high-end card, but you're looking to drop $330+ or so on it, same with the GTX 275. The GTX 295 most likely won't drop in price anymore, but it's hard to say on this card for certain. You won't find these prices on these cards going down. The production on them has stopped (except for maybe the GTX 295 and possibly some GTX 285). The GTX 280 pretty much ended when the 275 came out, so they're really tough to find at a fair price. ATI won't drop prices right off the bat, at least I don't think they should. Nvidia will have a low supply of their new GTX 480/470 cards that will fly off the shelves and they won't be able to keep up with the demand for a bit. Once they can keep up, then look for ATI to start shifting gears - throwing out more of their high-end card (HD 5970) at a better rate and pushing pricing down on the 5870 cards and under; as long as Nvidia's cards that are similar in performance are priced to compete with ATI's. Cards that will probably see a drop in prices to clear out shelves would be the GTX 260 and GTS 250, along with any remaining 9800GT. However, that's still just speculation. In the end, I wouldn't hold my breath for any price drops on the GT200 cards nor any of the new generation cards, right off the bat.
