with dell computers be able to install on a diff harddrive then one that came with the comp itself. I've heard a few people say you can't that there something special on the disc that recognizes the certain harddrive you already have...i just find that highly..wrong..but..just thought I'd ask before i get a bigger harddrive

its usually not a vista install disc, but rather a repair disc.

The oem is designed to detect a Dell bios. If you want to upgrade the hard drive in your dell with a new bigger one, yes you can reinstall vista using the disc.

As long as the motherboard in your PC is the same motherboard that came with the disk you can use it..

All OEM OS's from microsoft are tied to the motherboard you have at the time you install windows. To be able to install on another computer in the future you need the RETAIL version of the OS. It costs a lot more then the OEM software.

Your not wrong but I just wanted to elaborate for others.

There are OEMs and then there are OEMs. The OEMS you buy individualy from companies such as newegg are restrictly only in that they can't be "activated" on any other machine other than the one it was originally activated on. In fact the only difference between those OEMs and the retail are that the retail license can be transferred to a new pc when you build a new computer, whereas the OEM can't, thus you won't be able to activate it....in both cases, the OS will install just fine. The retail costs almost exactly twice as much...if you buy OEM and then buy another when you upgrade, you'll find it breaks even, except that the retail can be transferred in theory an unlimited amount of times..assuming you abide by the single pc rule.

The OEM that dell offers is integrated with a software that will not let it install on any computer other than a dell. In fact, you don't even have to activate them. The bios contains the dell oem license codes. The original poster was worried that his OS wouldn't work the new hard drive because it wasn't from Dell.
