The two things in your question are kind of not related... an image being HD and having good quality are not quite the same. HD means high resolution and more pixels; good picture quality is a combination of many factors such as deep black levels.

I'd possible try to get a bigger brand name like Sony, Sharp, or Samsung. Mind you you will pay a couple hundred more but it will be worth it in the long run.

Vizio is normally associated with brilliant HDTVs. With that being said, keep the following in mind:

1. The contrast ratio is not listed - You may want to find it on Pricegrabber. For a TV that size, a ratio of at least 1200:1 is acceptable.

2. Walmart sells a Panasonic & Magnavox 42" that look great. I know this because I've drooled over them in person.

3. Go to Walmart and compare the TVs in person. TVs are like cars. Never make a decision without personally inspecting it.

4. In response to your HD tuner question, one comes built in. No need to buy an additional HD Tuner

Honestly, if you have the $1000 to spend on a large TV, go to Sams Club, Walmart, & Costco to see which TV is the best picture and value for the money. If you're on a limited budget and have $1000 to spend, then higher-end brands will result in a smaller tv, 37-in or 32-inch TV. Hope this helps. GB

Pretend you read the word "economical" and not "brilliant" =]

lasberry hit the mark on this part; DON'T MAKE ANY DESICION UNTIL YOU SEE AND HEAR THE TV YOU WANT UP CLOSE! Find out if it's at Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, Discount Crapola (ok that ones made up but you get the idea) and compare it to everything else you see in the store. I did my browsing at Best Buy and learned a ton of stuff from the sales people there and ended up selecting a TV I had read about online but hadn't seriously considered simply because it was $200 out of the price range I had considered. When you do make your desicion, try putting it off if possible: HD-TV prices PLUMMET around thanksgiving, pre-christmas, post-christmas and superbowl time. I held off on buying a 42" Samsung for one week during christmas time and ended up shaving $200 off the price so it dropped right into the range I had intially wanted. Do the research and pick something that you SEE and HEAR yourself and you will definitely reap long term rewards from it.
