  • The next-generation Intel® Core™ Duo processor is based on the innovative Intel® Core™ microarchitecture, so it runs faster and is more energy-efficient for cooler, quieter operation

  • Memory Stick media slot with support for Memory Stick media with MagicGate functionality; Secure Digital media slot
  • i.LINK (IEEE 1394) port and 5 high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast digital data transfer and easy peripheral connectivity
  • Built-in high-speed Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965AGN LAN (802.11a/b/g/n); 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T Ethernet networking interface with RJ-45 connector; V.90/V.92 high-speed data/fax modem

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition operating system with Service Pack 1 (SP1) preinstalled; software package included with Sony Click to Disc and more; 60-day trial version of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 also included

That's probably more than you guys need to know, but i don't feel like deleting the excess crap about wifi and monitors jsut incase anything is important besides processor, graphics card, etc.

Thats really overpriced. You could go to avadirect and customize a desktop with a dual core, 8800GT, and two gigs of ram for probaly less than a $1000. Theres even a laptop at bestbuy that has a 17 inch screeen, 8800M GTS, 4gigs of ram, 320gb harddrive....ect for $1099

so whats a good gaming pc then that will run most games pretty well without breaking 2000$, with the exception of alienware because my mom won't go for it because she thinks it will be for gaming exclusively and nobody else could use it for anything else because all you could do is play games, which ive gone through 1k times with her and she still won't go for it :(

but those are for the most part, way expensive. just give me a good example of what would be a recommended setup for most games, as far as graphics card, ram, and the processor/ghz. and please dont give me a link to your current setup and say its the best thing since sliced bread, biased people do that way too much on internet forums and its really not helpful :(

That computer you listed is using laptop parts so I don't know which one you want so i'll list both. If you want a laptop then get something like this for $1099 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8780198&type=product&id=1204332501169 and if you want a desktop then customize this pc http://www.avadirect.com/product_details_configurator.asp?PRID=9554 avadirect is a very good company that offers a great 3 warrenty which most companies charge alot extra for. I customized a desktop with a crosair 450w for powersupply(very reliable and will allow good upgrade options), 2gigs of the cheapest ram, 160gb harddrive, E4600 processor, and windows xp SP3 all for $651. All you need now is a monitor which runs for $200-$300 for a good quality one and a video card which you can pick up like a 4850/9800gtx for $200

I don't see why people get the $2,000 computers.

I'm currently running CoD4 on a Dell Dimension 4300 with a 1.6GHz processor and an NVIDIA GeForce 6200 PCI (I think) graphics card.

Excuse my computer language by the way. :D

They have a 9.5 customer rating on reselleratings, let you select quality parts so there less trouble, and from what ive read/experienced have great customer support with a 3 year warrenty that most companies charge hundreds extra for. There basically one of the best pre-built companies you can buy from and lots of users on this board would agree so there most likely your best bet.

I dont buy their pre-built stuff, it's way more fun building it yourself, but yeah their customer support is amazing, you can get them to look at ANYTHING software or hardware related, the only thing that sucks is their hours

Yes I know its more fun building, trust me ive built plenty of computers..... I would of mentioned building but he said he just wanted a computer so that to me doesn't include a list of parts and most people espically if they don't know alot about computers would rather spend the extra $100-$250 to buy it already made that they know works, even if building isn't that hard anyways.

and company's such as Alienware use their fancy chassises to entice people into buying their overpriced computers (but I've got to admit, their cases are really nice)

Now that I've dived into it (haven't built yet, but I find myself more enthusiastic about the project of finding parts and putting them together than the actual prospect of a new machine), partly on mastershake's advice, I think it should be noted to the original poster that he can save a lot of money for much better performance if he builds it himself. Even Avadirect has a (from a hazy guess) markup on the machine I'm building that adds up to several hundred dollars. And the big box sites... Forget it. I still know next to nothing and even I find myself looking at the Dell configurators and wondering how anybody can be expected to buy a computer without knowing if its motherboard has full 16 x slots or what kind of cooling system it has.

And if you're looking to spend around two grand, you're talking about more than 150, 200. Depending on the company, you're likely to save 400+ with better parts, no preinstalled BS and the fun of comparing configurations with strangers on the internet (and it is fun-trust me). The only thing that still worries me is not having a comprehensive warranty: If I screw up, there's nobody to blame but myself. Even so, if your folks will let you do it, I think it's well worth it on economic/performance grounds alone.

That said, if you do want it prebuilt and you want gaming power for a low price, Dell has a couple big specials going on right now. If somebody in your family is in college (or graduate school, I believe) or on college faculty, you can save an extra two to three hundred bucks. An XPS 420 with an 8800 GT, 24 inch monitor and 9450 quad core is sub-2000 right now. Drop the monitor to the stock 19" and the processor to the very respectable dual core or 9600 and you can get it below 1500. I know there was a dual 8800 GT deal on the 630s last week. It might still be available. That thing should run Crysis without any trouble. There are also 420s with deeply discounted 24" and 27" monitors available.

(Note: Even with the academic discount, the machine I'm going to build from better parts costs three hundred less than the 630 at which I was looking. That's what finally convinced me to do it myself.)

The main bottleneck is your video card. Its a 8400, which makes you think: okay its an 8000 series which means its new but its basicly not much better then a real gaming card of 3 years ago. So drop that and try to get a 9600GT. If you still have money after that try to upgrade the processor to something of atleast 2.4ghz dualcore.

Why DDR3 when it's 100$+ more expensive than DDR2 and offers no significant advantage over the latter? Why a keyboard for 80$?

Probably because since he can afford $2000 mark, he put in extra good stuff.

I doubt he wants to build though, he'll look at all the work and think it's hard and buy that over priced piece of junk he listed.

But that PC that the above poster listed through parts, is pretty damn awesome..... and will last quite long.

That stuff you're looking at at best buy.. won't even run current games that well at all...

A lot of people bash Dell but you can customize one on their site that will beat those specs for under $1000. Find a decent online coupon and it will be even cheaper. Also customize and compare on Dell, HP, Gateway, and other online pc builders to see which one will give you a better price. A decent gaming pc can be built for under $1000 easy.
