Great, however I was just discussing it with a mate, he reckons that the ATI 5770 for the 3rd monitors requires a monitor with a native displayport? and that this adaptor wont work? Fact or Fiction? :P

Your friend is telling the truth (surprisingly :P). You will need one monitor to be a displayport monitor, because the 5xxx series cards only have two clock mechanisms for monitors, which is why one is a displayport. You will need an active displayport adapter in order to use a third non-displayport monitor. Something like this would work for you.

Ah darnit.... thats pretty pricey! , and I cant seem to see any 24' monitors that have a display port for under £200 -_-.... guess 3 monitors is out of the window for along while :P

Not at the moment with current HD 5 series.

Current HD 5 series require a active display port, powered by USB, adapter if you want to use a non-DP monitor. Dell has has the professional series monitors that sell for about $210 USD a piece at 21.5".

I know a guy on the Extreme Overclocking Forums that has three of these for his EyeFinity setup and he loves them.

Wait what? Why wouldn't a displayport > dvi cable work?

I mean I saw people using mini dp > dvi on the hd5970 review.

the 5770 has 2 DVI ports, both are in use, but you cant use the HDMI slot that comes with it, only the displayport as a 3rd :P

For EyeFinity DP IS required, which is why most people need ACTIVE, aka powered, DP to DVI adapters. For just regular monitors you can use DP to DVI, but if it is over 1920x1080 it has to be powered, that's if there are only ONE or TWO monitors. If you have THREE than go to the EyeFinity part of my post. Because now you have ONE resolution in Eyefinity essentially.

This is what anandtech used... http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3679&p=6 Though instead of mini, make that non mini. 1920x1200, not 1680x1050.

But they wanted 2560x1600 so they got a box.

They probably changed the design of the 5970 and powered the DP on-board, not the manu, but ATI.

I believe that is for running two monitors as a clone, ie showing the same thing. I could be wrong, but I don't believe so.

I don't think so, because if it was powered then I am sure that it could output 2560x1600, and not a max of 1920x1200. On the other topic, that cable will only show a clone.

Right ok, did some more research, found this: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1339901.html Now from what I read there, the 5XXX can only support 2 Digital Connections due to its architecture, however a VGA to DP works as a 3rd substitute... the downside being you cant get HDCP compatibility (I dont know what that is, but if you do, good :P) so Blu Rays wont work on that monitor but apperently normal computer resolution & games will? So I found this... not exactly as much as I would like to pay .... but still: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/184666 But the one review says: "although i never got this through ebuyer , id had it lying around for ages , i bought a lower end xfx card to try dx11 , as id got an array on monitors i set this up for eyefinity , great it worked ok , i only had up to 1440x900 resolution this was fine , i hope this can be of some help to you if your lookin" The english is pretty bad, so I cant tell if he means HE only has 1440x900 monitors, or that the adaptor will only support that? .... -_-
