Will we ever have a reasonably priced monitor with deep blacks??

Before you say it I will tell you that I cannot afford to buy plasma and I also dont want my PC display to have a poor pixel density so plasma TV as monitor is out of the question for me and I think I am being reasonable in saying that.

Anyways by reasonably priced I dont mean $150 but more like less than $500. Unfortunately even with a budget of $500 there is nothing I can purchase that has deep blacks. If they made new CRT's I would totally buy one even with all their drawbacks, picture quality matters alot to me and it annoys me when I play metro 2033 on my IPS panel monitor.

My 4 year old 17" CRT monitor does a better job at metro 2033 and doom 3 than my top of the line IPS panel LCD.

I mean with TV's you have plasma and the LED TV's have infinitely better blacks than the PC LCD's, why is no one bothering to make a monitor that takes us to the next level?? We are having super amoled in mobile phones, NGP will have OLED, does anyone plan on catering to the monitor market?

Technically...the Kuros are monitors not TVs so its already here :P

It won't happen for awhile. Best there is really are IPS panels but still isn't as good as other TVs that can cost as much. (400+ range)

NGP is going OLED because Sony is a major supporter and developer of OLED. It'll be the next step for monitors no doubt though. We can't get any better with current LCD technology. Just doesn't work.

LCD really can't get much better at this point. LED backlighting improves a lot, but, still has a ton of issues. Their poor motion can never be fixed with the way they work. Manufacturers need to invest in OLED. I mean, the screen on my Fascinate has deeper blacks than a Kuro...OLEDs are fantastic.

Nothing to rip apart :P The blacks of an OLED are absolute, but current OLED tech is consistently suffering from inaccurate colour and over saturation. Poor primary and secondary colours are to blame. Though aside from those issues OLED is still a work in progress and I would expect it to improve once companies get serious in the TV market (ie larger OLEDs). Considering Pioneer pulled back and Panasonic is taking ages to get to work on Plasma tech, OLED seems like the only solution in the future.

Yes you can TC. It's called the BenQ BL2400PT.

That monitor after calibration will achieve 0.05cd/m² blackness. More or less as good as LGs 950 series plasma or Sony's HX series LED or Panasonic GT20.

You can buy it in Norway for around 1800 NOK which is just over $300. Extremely fair price. In the US it should be $250 or less..

other specs:

24 inches

LED backlit

VA panel

8 MS response time

great colours

1920x1080p resolution

I should have mentioned one thing, my monitor's blacks arent as bad but the viewing angles on blacks make them much worse than they are. With default brightness there is this purple thing on the corners, lowering the brightness reduces that but the contrast suffers.

VA panel offers inferior colours but I am willing to accept that for better blacks. What I just dont like about VA are the viewing angles.:(

I am a sucker for viewing angles and this just doesnt cut it.

And secondly the white level is much lower on the benQ than my dell, another huge compromise.:(

Many dell 2209wa owner's run it with 0 brightness, it significantly improves blacks but I dont like it as the "vibrancy and pop" are clearly missing by lowering the brightness that much. That's why I use dynamic contrast and just "bear" with the noticeable brightening and darkening of the screen.

There are quite alot of people in the world who can afford it.

For all your big shot enterpreneurs, celebrities, sports stars etc it's change money and obviously sony is selling it at an insane profit margin so even if it sells very little they would be able to recover the overheads incurred in making it.

But it's only 25 inches. Most of those people you listed don't know enough about computers to realize the benefit of such a monitor. They would probably opt for using a 50" 1080p HDTV over this monitor simply because to them "bigger is better". Only Silicon Valley big shots would be interested in buying this, and there's not enough of them to make that thing profitable.

Main customers for that will be commercial users, TV/film, graphic and photography. Probably a $10,000+ profit margin and it acts as a trial run for the improved and cheaper next gen.

/facepalm dude. Sony is one of the biggest in the professional industry.

Sony has some SICK SXRD projectors with 4096x2160p (see Kipnis Studio) that could any where from $100,000 - $1,000,000. The price of this OLED monitor is penuts compared to the best displays sony has to offer.

the 25" 1080p OLED was DESIGNED for the broadcasting industry. Trust me, they'll be eating these up (I can assume 1 company buys like hundred of these...)

95% of the sales will come from professional studios but there's definitely going to be dozens of graphics artists/designers who demand the best that will buy it.

If I had a seven figure income I would buy them in a heartbeat!

Actually in most cases very few of these sets are sold, some are more like a concept which have gone into production. Though the target market are always larger corporations as they can afford this type of equipment. Companies will spend a lot on a few devices, but in no way will they purchase hundreds of them when in only a couple of years they can be purchased for a fraction of the price. Also no one will be jumping to Sony's OLED displays are suffering from primary/secondary colour issues, that's unacceptable for a professional studio. They'd be more likely to lease equipment than purchase.

Yeah, but the color issues can be fixed. The technology just needs a little bit of work. OLEDs have near perfect motion, incredible contrast ratios due to bright whites and extremely deep blacks, good viewing angles, and they're very, very thin.

There is actually an Eizo monitor with even deeper blacks than the aforementioned BenQ (0.05cd/m²)

The Eizo FS3231 has a black level as low as 0.04cd/m² which is equal to the 2010 TV of the year Panasonic VT 20 plasma. If you want a deeper black level than this Eizo you're going to have to get one of the below:

*Sony XBR 960 CRT

* Sony GDM FW900 CRT
* Sony 17/25" 1080p OLED
* Pioneer Elite Kuro series plasma
* Pioneer 9G Kuro series plasma

* Panasonic GT30 plasma

It is -43% off in Norway. It costs less than my 2009 Samsung XL2370 costs today. TN panel that is.

In other words, its priced roughly the same as the high end TN panels. Not sure if you're US or not but I couldn't find a US price on it.

Searching that monitor on google gives only 3 results.:?

Surely if it was so good that wouldnt be the case.:?

I cant even find what panel type it is....

And since eizo monitors are normally so expensive I assumed it will be as well....

Its price is £190 in Norway where the consume prince index is roughly 40% higher than the US or 20-30% higher than the UK depending on exchange rates. Usually Norwegian prices are equal to UK prices when it comes to electronics. Its sometimes lower some times higher, it depends on the Sterling. Example: £199.99 iPod would be 1995 NOK 1 GBP = 9.4 NOK at the moment.

The amazing deal can be found here

However in the UK it costs £311... Still a good price for what you're getting.

Most TVs are VA panels - they have awesome blacks/contrast ratios, but absolutely terrible response time/input lag compared to a TN or even an IPS. On average, it's kind of a wash.

Ya but they dont give you the same immersive feeling as you cant sit too close because of the pixel density.

Secondly they are expensive, when I'll have the money I'll definitely get a TV as a second display. Man I wish I had a plasma, I would love to play metro 2033 on it and ofcourse watch movies. When the blacks arent so good, the black bars are soooo annoying.

So while you be playing your PC games sideways? Is your chair only half a fot above the ground? Are you 3 metres tall? If no to all, why would you be bothered by viewing angles ? :P

Because I watch movies on my PC monitor, it is my primary mode of watching movies until I can afford to get a big TV.

Plus many a times friends come over to play games where we have several people watching and one person playing.

I want my monitor to be a proper multimedia thing, with bad viewing angles that is just not happening.

There can be more than one person looking at the monitor and I also watch movies on my monitor where I am definitely not dead center infact I keep changing my pose.
