You aren't likely to see any performance gains just from going to 7.

Remember though Vista is a memory hog ... it uses nearly 20% of RAM on my friends computer just sitting at the desktop doing nothing and he has 8GB of RAM someone with 4GB of RAM or 2GB of RAM will be better off with Windows 7 then Vista. I use 15-18% of my 4GB at desktop ... Vista would use nearly double.

Vista will use 40% of your ram no matter how much you have. Thats a good thing. It means your memory isnt just sitting around bineg mostly idle all the time. It will release that ram when another program asks for it so its just as if you had low ram usage.
You're likely to get a performance decrease going into Win7 because drivers for video cards havent fully matured yet. Differences between XP and Vista for gaming performance tends to be less than 5% - an imperceptible amount. In some cases Vista is slightly better ( by about 5%), one example is World in Conflict.
I wouldnt really worry about it.

While I agree Vista manages ram well, so does Windows 7. Though you are wrong about the drivers for videocards, Vista and 7 share the same driverbase, so Windows 7's video drivers are very mature and stable.[QUOTE="nVidiaGaMer"]

Also with DX11 Vista/Win7 will leave XP faaar behind![QUOTE="XaosII"][QUOTE="nVidiaGaMer"]

Windows 7 is like Vista 2.0 imo its faster (in my case) and boots up much quicker then vista did. Since Vista uses that much RAM I wouldn't be able to play a game (Crysis or COD4), listen to music, and download stuff at the same time without running out of memory.

Either way theres no going back to Vista for me ...
how is XP better for gaming than Vista?mfp16To me, it's only better for gaming if you're playing older games. The kind that usually only work on Win9x, but have been patched to work on XP by now. Any machine running Vista is, in all likeliness, competent enough to run modern games, where there wouldn't be much of a practical difference unless said system's short on RAM. (For games that approach the 2 GB barrier like Crysis, only having that much RAM may result in a performance hit under Vista/7. Then again, if you're concerned about RAM usage, I should point out that XP uses more than Windows 2000 did...) Anyway, Windows 7 is basically Windows Vista SE. The core OS is very similar, but it's been optimized, and this time around, given a good interface overhaul, too. (Not like going from Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE, where most people probably didn't notice the difference at first glance.)
