Nobody knows...

I believe the 9.3 million population will just continue rising.

But nobody knows what will happen in the future...

It can't fail simply because of how big it's been and how much profit it's made. However like all games the population playing will decline but i don't expect it to happen any time soon.

Most of that is China though so it doesn't really count, i think it would be something more like 3 milllion in the western world which is still the most outt any mmorpg.

However the WOW community sucks and i'd rather go for quality.

99% of the mmorpgs sucks arse lol they're all the same and the genre has really been dead for the past few years with crap release after crap release and same old same old.

I think EVE and WOW are the only 2 mmorpgs that have grown throughout their life.

WoW is very accessible - from visual to mechanics - which is why it has such a massive following. It will only be toppled by WoW2.

The only real reason I quit was because raiding got tedious ... only pvp kept my interest and Blizzard isn't exactly well known for providing amazing pvp content (or really supporting it) which is odd considering.

Of my circle of friends from WoW ... 90% are moving to WAR when its released in hopes of a better pvp experience.

For that to happen a new MMO will have to have...

1.Massive hype. Being based off a popular series or lore (Like DnD "The lost realms".) would help a lot.

2.It has to have the same low and even lower requirements. There are tons of players who don't even meet the minimum specs and run it on dial up. These people some of many, many working man and woman that live in small towns(but by 'many' I met when they are put togehter. :P)who may had join to get more socializiton. (Not every town has cable, some don't even haveDSL.)

3.It has to be even easier and yet, more addicting. WoW your character is always getting stornger and you are always lerning something new.

4.Beat WoW on solo content. There are also a large amount of players who play WoW because it's solo frinedly. Why? Just because. Even though they are playing alone that have comfort knowing other people are there. So mostly people who like to play alone but not feel alone.

5.Larger spam of leveling. I met countless people who loved the leveling but hated end game. So they re rolled and when they were done playing all the classes they quit.

6.Stronger socializiton surport. Believe or not there are many people who would pay monthly to only walk in vitural bars to play gumbaling mini games and chat all day.

Anyone agree with me?

Please no! If MMOs are the future I'll just trash my computer!. This genre cant be compared to any of the FPS, RTS or RPG genre wich are the true kings of computer gaming I think FPS is the king right know, but I like more RTS anyway..

They might aswell be, with the increase focus on having more players in mulitiplayer, wouldnt it just make more sense, that your FPS mightaswell be a MMO?

and I say MMOs are the future because its very hard pirate MMO games, sure you can pirate the game disk, but inorder to play online you need to pay.

give it, I dont know, maybe three years and maybe...just maybe, WoW will fall, unless, blizzard(Activision Blizzard now) finds something new to add the the game that will bring more people in, Ive heard that the game's population has been declining, but the future is undecided, anything could happen, and dont even dare consider World of Warcraft 2, god help us all, if WoW 2 ever turned out great, you might as well bend your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.

PS - Dont consider World of Starcraft...or even World of Diablo for that matter.

Both genres can be combined with MMOs. There's already MMOFPS and MMORTS. Online is the future.

Whereas it is fairly obvious, MMO's are here to stay, I wouldn't say it is 'the' future. As MMO's are now (although this could change ofc), they all basically demand massive amounts of time to be spent trying to acquire new gear, fame and glory and what not. This simply doesn't appeal to alot of people.

Further, whereas over 9 million subscribers is impressive, it is still only 9 million players out of god knows how many. That is, MMO's are still just a sub-genre of gaming suited for a special type of gamers.

As an EQ vet, I can say with confidence that, eventually, it will run its course, and dim to brown dwarf status, though as long as Blizzard keeps supporting it, it will last for quite a while still. Eventually, the next big thing or the sequel will come along.

I think it will "fall" of course. It's amazing it's still the king of MMOs in my opinion. There are many others carving a nitch for themselves, but they don't seem to break 1-2 million subscriber base. (actually I just pull that number out of my ass) Something has got to replace it just because of the graphics and the fact that most of the game has stayed the same for years. They release patches and expansions, but you still have to basically do the same things over and over to level up a character. And it's nice to have new end game instances, I'm sure, but it will always be a grind. Something will have to knock it off just because people will get fed up with doing the same thing over and over and want to start fresh, even if it's not a gianormous change (which EQ to WOW was not IMO). Still, that being said, I think it will be around forever. They'll always have enough people playing to keep a couple dozen servers running. I hope they cut the fee though. That's the one thing I never liked about WoW. Their fee was way to high ($13-15/month). I really don't believe you should ever have to pay more than $10/month for an MMO. I realize there is inflation and all, but WoW is just gouging because of their kingly status.

I've not read any replies to this thread. I haven't done this because I'd like to make a prediction made from observations in other topics.

My prediction is, there's going to be at least a few people b***ing about both the MMO genre being; too much money and/or a grind fest, and/or WoW in general.

SonKev

Actually Vivendi owns Blizzard and have done for some time now. They haven't been bought out from Vivendi by Activision, instead they've merged Blizzard and Activision together. In actual fact I think it was something like Blizzard had invested double in the merge deal than Activision, and it was a multi-billion dollar deal.

Basically expect to see the same games from both Blizzard and Activision but under one name. WoW will be unnafected btw, it has its own divisions of Blizzard which is what I never tell the people whining about WoW taking all of Blizzard's time from other games it could be making; ie Warcraft 4 or Diablo 3 or whatever.

But what about the people that died in China from lack of sleep and nutrition? Ahh I guess you're the nutritional expert and doctor though with the psychology certificate. Nah I can't lie, you're just here to confirm what I predicted a few posts back. That stereotype is a little worn though? What's the matter? Can't come up with a new one?

lol, biggest fanboy i have seen around. Everytime there is something related to WOW, you must jump in and defend it. Its a game, and inanimate object, no need to feel so emotionally bound to it. No matter how small the insult is, you are offended as if the comment was directed to you.

All you do in life is work work work and then you die. So why live? Because if you base life off of 8 hours a day 5 days a week it makes a pretty bleak perception. Judging an entire game level 1-70 based on the fact that you felt the need to rep/raid grind despite the fact it wasn't fun doesn't make the game ****, it makes your decisions poor. When it isn't fun anymore, quit, but that doesn't mean that WoW 1-70 isn't a brilliant game. If the game really ****, you never would have gotten to the point that you grind grind grind.

I don't predict Wow dying for quite awhile, but I do predict the same monsters, getting bigger, with more imaginative names and colours, set in exotic lands that look amazingly like those you explored 100 levels earlier.

It won'tbe even close tothat soon unless they do a really good job on Warhammer Online or Age of Conan *crossing fingers*. The hype is smaller right now because they just started releasing information about it. Plus there are players like me that thought the last expansion was poorly made and expect the same from the next one. If they prove us wrong, people will come flocking back.

The best example for this is Ultima. 10 years after launch it is still making money and people still love it. WoW became the biggest MMorpg in history and 4 years later it is still going strong so at the very least there will be servers left in 20 years with people still playing.

P.S. World of Warcraft is simply an incredible game that did it all right where 99% of it`s population could care less about what some grumpy seen it all done it all gamers in some gaming forum thinks of this game. And that is a true testament of what wow is, and who wow is for.

No, I dont think WoW will fall, or it wont until WoW 2 comes out. Blizzard makes great games for the masses, they make games that even people with crappy PCs can run. I dont think WoW will ever be dethroned. Thats not to say there wont be any good MMOs, though.
