I've posed this question to myself in the past. I'm nineteen years old, and I've been playing games regularly for over fourteen of them. I can quite easily say that I will always love gaming, so it will always be among my top hobbies (AKA choice 4). But this has got me wondering, just how long and how much do you think you will continue to enjoy games?

Will you always have a great love for games, or as life takes its course, will your interests slowly be drawn elsewhere? Are you someone who has a never-ending obsession that borders on unhealthy (you know who you are), or are you just a casual and/or younger gamer who sees your current interest in games as just a phase that will end quickly? Maybe you feel you will always enjoy games from time to time, but you won't have the passion for them that you have today.

Understand that when I say"lose interest," that doesn't include not having as much time for games once you've obtained your life's steady job and/or got married and had children (unless you lose interest as a direct result of that :P).

I don't see myself losing interest in games. Ever. In the same way that I don't think I'll ever lose interest in film, television, music or literature.

I'm 23 now, I've been gaming since I was 4. I love games more now than ever, I think - and really, I don't see that chnging. I have much less time to game these days, but I don't enjoy it any less than ever. In fact, with recent releases like The Orange Box, Hellgate and The Witcher, as well as numerous other games coming this month, I think I'm enjoying gaming right now more than I have since 2004.

So long as the quality is there, I will be too.

Hmm, tough q. I can see that my future work, family and chores around the house (kids, dog and so on) might eat up most of my gaming time, but I do not see myself losing interest in games as long as devs try to push boundaries a little. That's why I respect Cryteks and Biowares out there. If EA ruled the gaming world, i would lose interest a long time ago.

I've been gaming since the vic-20, as well. But, I'm an adult now. I have a good job and other interests that are more important. But...I think I will always play games. I don't watch much tv. I don't play games all the time either...I play games in place of tv when I just want to relax and get away.

I've always been a huge gamer, but the older I get, the more I find myself getting bored with games. I remember thinking so many games were incredible, but nothing really "impresses" me anymore, and I tire of the new games that I buy rather quickly. I'm married now, and I think once kids come into the picture I'll probably be at the low end of "casual". A mixture a not being able to afford new hardware, losing time to play, and just not having the interest. I think the "graphics war" is turning a lot of people away, because the actual core parts of a game are being pushed into 2nd place. Graphics don't make a game, and that's why we're not seeing anything that has that "Wow!" fun factor anymore.

I tend to go through phases with gaming where I don't play much for a couple of months and then I'll go a couple of months where I play games for at least a couple of hours a day. I don't see me ever completely quitting games though, unless of course there is something cataclysmic that happens and electonics no longer work. Even then I'd just go back to pen and paper RPGs, board games, and card games. :)

Issnt this like when movies first came out? everyoen thought that sooner or later people would get tired of watching movies?

I see Games as a kind of an evolution of the entertainment buisness, so Id say No, I vill never stop playing games, there will be times of my life when I will play less, but I will not stop. It is an exelent way to fet new impressions, provoke feelings, and get a story told. just an evolution from when our forefarthers sat by the fire telling stories.

As long as gaming as a whole doesn't eventually end up devolving into MMO-only games, and we still have quality single-player titles, I don't forsee myself losing interest. Gaming is lots of fun and is far less expensive and destructive than many other hobbies I could be indulging myself in.

Well, I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of fairly devoted gamers :). A little disquieted that a plurality of people seem to have a gaming addiction, though :P.

Hell ya! Im in exactly the same boat (tho i dont have hellgate...yet!). Just got the Witcher as well and I havent had this much fun since, well, since Portal.

Honestly, I will play games til I die. People my age (20s, low 30s) were thefirst generation to actually beraised around video games, so I feel its a part of who we are. I can easily see myself forming a guild for World of Starcraft 3 with my roommates in the retirement home in 60 years. Or maybe a sweet Counterstrike clan! And I will still be playing Deus Ex then too!

I don't think I will ever get tired of videogames, Yes my type of games had changed with the years (RTS & FPS), but I never stopped playing and I'm 37, so no I don't think that in a few years I will lose interest, Thank god I found a girl that shares my hobby ( aaha right...) and is as Crazy as I 'am, Because, if I hadn't, I could have been playing 20 straight hours of wow daily, like those korean/chinese guys, thankfully that hasn't happened.....Yet.

I'm 24, I've been playing games for a long time now. Since I was 5 or 6 or something. I don't see myself ever stopping. I mean, at this point it is really like asking someone "will you ever stop watching TV or movies"? Of course not. It is entertainment and I love doing it.

I dont even think of video games as my hobby anymore. Its just who I am, like others have said, its like watching TV or a Movie. Just in a better form becuase we get to interact with it. I laugh when people say a video game is a bad influence on kids when in reality, I am more tempted to go replay something in real life after watching a movie than if I were to actually be doing in a video game.

About a year and couple of months ago I got into competition games(mainly DM Dueling) and I love it. For a while I was playing 8-12hrs a day, 7 days a week, just training and learning all that I could. Ever since that I just cant think of what I do as a hobby, its just something I do like eating. You crave for it when your not doing it, but sometimes you can get too full and stop for a while. But not after long, your eating/gaming again.

You have an "online" life and a "real life" life. It's all about what you think is more important.

That my friend describes exactly why I (and others) love video games. We were raised with them, we took video games as a form of entertainment since we were kids. And thats the reason why I dont see myself loosing interest on them.

I'm 32, and it's rare that a game really grabs me. It's fun when it happens, but it doesn't happen often. I imagine it's going to get phased out of my life. Lately, I've been reading and watching sports more than anything. It doesn't help that I sit in front of a computer 40 hours a week already. I don't even have kids or anything yet. Once that happens, I may be out of gaming entirely.

Any hobby that distracts the human man from any form of violence is sufficient. As many things,if we haven't had such hobbys,we would obtain a violent attitude.I'll just say that videogames nulled human instincts a long time ago, just as other "hobbys"...

Well,i would leave this to a more philosophical person.Im not as bright as some people.

as a college student, i find myself playing less and less games throughout my college years. mainly due to the fact that i dont have enough free time to play. but when i do get freetime, i dont know what to do with myself and i usually end up watching a movie or actually working ahead on homework (eep).

I am starting to grow out of it, but trust me, i LOVE playing games... just no more time... =\

That's great! Did you manage to get an imported copy? I don't know exactly how much was censored for the US copy, but I can tell you that you may be missing out on a butt naked green skinned dryad walking around if you didn't get an import copy.

I heard reports of 80 hours of lifespan thrown around by developers, which i took to be the usual double it and add ten that developers tend to do when talking about their big games, but I'm late into chapter 2 and I've been playing it around twenty hours so far - unless chapter 2 is disproportionately large, the witcher could well be an eighty hour game.

I think it's probably the game of the year right here. If only for hot naked dryads.

I think you'd. When i was young every game was so interesting & fun to me such as contra, ninja gaiden, double dragon and many many more. But now it's hard for me to even find games that really interested me. I think i'd keep playing, just not as much as i would enjoy when i's younger.

This is true too. Mainly when I lost interest for a couple months nothing was exciting - every now and again I'd play C&C3 or Dawn of War, but now -especially this month- there are so many huge-name games coming out it's going to be almost impossible not to find something.

I was honestly losing all interest in gaming, the new consoles look like crap and as forthe pc, i was still playing the same game (cs) for like the last 5 yrs. That changed when i got a new pc. I'm not a graphcis whore , but like... being able to play with more then 5 fps sure makes a difference.

Doubt it.

My interest certainly wanes now and then. Actually, I haven't really been gaming much lately (haven't even played an hour in the past couple days,) but I don't think I'll ever stop turning to gaming as a major source of entertainment.

For a while now, I've had the opinion that PC games and games in general are gradually declining in quality, whereas the fancy graphics and effects are considered more important then gameplay. It's been a while since I had a game that really made me feel like the time I spent on it was worth every single minute.
Time isn't really on my side lately, neither, not that that's really strange or a problem. I was expecting to be gaming a whole lot less within a short while, as there were very little games that interested me.

However, then I bought a new PC, I had been saving for it for a while, and I though I might as wel buy it and enjoy what I can, and then I could still see if I was gonna drastically cut down the gaming.

Now, I'm actually looking forward to games that didn't really interest me before, the Crysis demo for example was kind of a surprise to me, I hadn't expecting anything from it beyond great visuals.
In other words, I feel like my interest in gaming has been renewed, and although I still haven't found THE "next gen" hardcore RPG, I'm pleased. You could say I'm becoming (or already am) a casual gamer.
I still don't game that much now, usually only during weekends, but it's still a lot more fun then it was a month or so ago. Funny isn't it. :)

As for the question wether or not it'll stay like that, it most likely will.

Im kind of in the same boat..How ever did you ever try bioshock..Its got a great invention and great story..Even though the game is short its still one of the best gamesoof the year..

Now to start on the topic

Hell no..Ive been playing games since my father bought home pong...Than it was the atari from there i went to the commodore sixty 4...Dont any one tell me this isnt a pc when it was the first pc either...Was bye far better than any pc games made today, ill tell ya that much...It had innovation..Had stuff i still miss today...Does any one miss them card board cut outs you printed with, the hot keys intact on your games i do..

Any how ill never stop buying games..Im married now, im sure children are on the way some day..Even when ive got my kids..Ill sink a hour in there of gaming now an than..Than when my kids grow ill be back to playing again...Ill than inroduce them into the gaming world...

Have games changed yes..So have the people..All i here no is graphics this graphics that...Than there are those who say they dont care about graphics...Than go out an buy that graphical game...When are you kids going to realise today that graphics do not make the game...Gameplay makes the game..Thats also what the reviewers of gamespot have gotten away from...

Conan for instance they bashed this game...Yet its one of the better games ive played this year..Could the camera angle be better hell yes...Its still one hell of a game...

Hellgate london full of bugs im playing..This has what ive been looking for, its a great game..They innitiated stats into there game...

Oblivion where do i start..Where it was a great fun game..I hated what the devs did...Freaking scaling system...Ive yet to pick it back up cause of this stupid system...Hope they dont make a mmorpg like they been talking...There is to many mmorpgs..That dont have enough high lvl stuff to do...How many mmorpgs. have you done of late that get boring, after a certain lvl...

Well will i always game yes..Question shouldve been answered as this..Will you always game or will you look twice at what game you purchase...Ive been reading more on games of late that ive been buying..Mad doc this year from bethestha did this to me..Made me a better consumer...Ill look at gameplay now more than graphics..

while i hate to think about it sometimes - yes, it is just a matter of time till i totally give up on games. while that may still be a fair way in the future - once i'm married and have kids i can't c me playin a lot of video games. guesses are i'll probably slowly start to phase out in year 12 and eventually by the time i start working have almost utterly given up on the sport(and yes it is a sport, if chess counts i'll be damned if video games don't)

I'm already starting to lose interest. I remember 3 years ago I gamed for hours a day. Now I can't even break the 2 hour limit in one session anymore. I don't hype games like before either. You gotta grow out of it sooner or later.

A couple notes for most of you younger types. I've been playing video games since 1979, started on a Commodore Pet, Atari, Coleco, RCA console, Commodore 64/128, Apple, first IBM models etc. I've bought 4 'IBM compatibles' as we used to say and now own a 5 year oldAlienware that I'm about to replace with a 'home built' quad. So I've grown up with the whole video game revolution and that puts some perspective on questions and comments like these in this post. I have to laugh when I hear people are getting 'bored' with video games. Typically this means they have too much time on their hands. Because along with all the gaming I have kept myself busy in other areas. Too much of a good thing is, well, a bad thing. Secondly, I also get a laugh at all the people who lament the 'good old days' of gaming. Talking about how early games were so innovative, and they were so much better. The innovative thing is easy to see, of course they were innovative, there hadn't been anything like them before! The technology is maturing, and with that comes some redundancy. However, we get the good as well, great graphics, bigger games, more options etc. While I have fond memories of many old games, I wouldn't care to play them much considering the limited time life allows for such things. As for games getting 'dumbed down' that is a typical result of mainstreaming any pop culture activity. The good news is that more people are drawn to the activity, and some of those are incredible developers. More mundane games actually means we'll get more great games as well, you just have to sort through them. Gone are the days when you could pick up nearly any title and find something new, but hidden in all the numbers are many gems. I for one will play video games as long as I can, or more specifically as long as the games interest me and that has not slowed at all, although my tastes have certainly changed. Lastly, I do not lament the 'good old days'. Because while they are certainly 'old days', they were not actually that 'good' in terms of games.
