I'm currently running Win XP 64 and also running Win 7 RC and love it, I'd prefer to just buy the upgrade Win 7 and upgrade my XP but want to know how diffiult that is? Also of course its much cheaper to just buy the upgrade. I want to get the Win 7 Ultimate edition since thats the version the RC is and i do really love it. I also wanna know if both versions 32bit and 64 bit are on the same disc or do they sell two different sku's?

Thanks!

I don't know if this is of any use to you: "XP users who are performing a clean upgrade to Windows 7 are advised not to enter their product key when prompted during installation. Rather, they should move on to the next step and only enter the key once full installation is complete. The method "works around this issue to activate Windows 7," notes a support bulletin published by the IT department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where numerous students were apparently having trouble with the issue. For its part, Microsoft has not published an official solution to the problem-possibly because any fix might allow a user to illegally install an upgrade version of Windows 7 onto a PC that's not eligible for an upgrade. The temptation is strong, given that the upgrade version of Windows 7 sells for $119, while the full version is priced at $199. I agree.... To the poster, You will have to buy a retail copy of W7 and do a clean install.

Umm, that won't solve anything. He can do a clean install with the upgrade edition, or an OEM edition... Getting Vista would be a viable solution if he was that attached to his XP installation, as Vista can upgrade an XP install, then he could then upgrade the Vista install to 7.

LEGALLY: - Clean install with upgrade edition is only viable if the XP version he has installs QUALIFIES for upgrade (in his case, I don't think so) - OEM only installed if system builder, or comes with system. - Upgrading to Vista then to W7 is stupid, it will be bloatware and make W7 run like a dog. Chances that the double upgrade will work are slim as well.

Bloatware with an OEM copy? I don't have a f***ing clue what you are talking about. I could see if it was like a dell version or something.

I think he meant the UPGRADE path...not the OEM version. He meant that if user installs Vista, with years of use.... and then on top of that he upgrades to W7, it won't work as smooth and fast as a clean install, which I agree with.

Nobody is going to care or look if there windows xp is "legally" ok with the upgrade edition, if such a thing even exists. In the past, an upgrade version made your previous license OS that is being upgraded, no longer valid. The average person is just not going to know there particular xp cannot legally be upgraded. And pretty much everyone uses the OEM edition as a cheap "full" windows version, its basically sold as such.

I haven't done the upgrade path, but I remember from Win98 to XP Upgrade, it would ask for the Win98 ORIGINAL CD. So maybe for W7 upgrade it asks for original WinXP CD and input legit Windows XP key. I'm just stating the LEGAL way it's MEANT to be done...

Some people don't want to clean install. I know I'd rather have done an upgrade. My XP install was like a month old and I finally had everything I used on it. Now I'm still re-installing stuff in 7 hahahah :)
