There is absolutely no reason to upgrade to win8 for games .

In Sleeping Dogs there have been Windows 8 glitches where large chunks of art are missing when the settings are under high. So not only do you get no performance benefits but you have to worry about whether there will be bugs in games that came out prior to 8.

Same here, including Sleeping Dogs. Don't upgrade to Windows 8 with the expectation of increased performance in games because you aren't going to get that, but Win 8 works well enough that you don't have to worry about staying away from the upgrade if you game.

Don't do it for the sake of games. You won't likely ever notice any major difference. I'm on day 4 using Win8 on a my spare PC and I still am not sold on win8 at all.

As I've said before on other threads, the benefits of Win8 are quite minor and most you will never notice unless you really pay attention to small details. Do it if your copy of Win 7 is getting slow and jammed up with programs and you need to reinstall an OS anyways, don't do it just for games, you won't notice the results.

I have to agree with the others, stay with win 7. I actually have win8 on my new computer and, while at first I though it was garbage, I kinda like it after hours and hours of customization, because it looks like Win7 now, thanks to ClassicShell. Btw, if you ever want to try it, you can get win8 upgrade for 15 $ relatively easily, just do a google search.

It's not just the touch screen thing, you get other features like Live Tiles, MarketPlace Apps, Faster Boot and Shutdown, Better Task Manager and Memory Management and more. But if you're just into gaming on PC, then no need to go to 8.

New computer pre-built will probably now come with Windows 8. If you build it yourself, you can go either way, 7 or 8. If you can still find licenses for Windows 7 (I haven't checked)

But is there any reason to get windows 7 instead of 8?

Depends if you want the classic Start Menu (Windows 7), or the Metro Menu (Windows 8). Windows 8 has a few improved features, like faster boot up and shutdown times, the App Store, Live Tiles, Instant Restore Feature etc, but these are mainly used for Social Networking, Email, etc etc. Either of them will play games exactly the same.

Okay. I remember when Win8 first launched there was this big uproar but it seems to have died down. For any kind of media center/home PC it would be fine, and for gaming it works the exact same. I was just wondering if the fracturing of UI and program functionality between Metro and Desktop was a big issue.

You'll hear humans ALWAYS uproar when there is change, instead of actually trying to learn something new and then decide if it's for them or not (and I'm not talking about computers specifically). The difference now with Win8 is that the "DESKTOP" is just another APP, that's what people don't seem to get. Yes, it's an awesome app since it's the same old desktop we are used to, but like a MAIN App. It's a bit hard to get used to it, specially with a mouse and keyboard, but don't believe it's so hard like some people make it out to be. Like I said before, you make ur decisions based on YOUR NEEDS.

There is no real reason to upgrade unless you're one of those people that just HAVE to have the latest and greatest thing to feel satisfied.

Games will run the same as they do in Win 7 for the most part. A waste of $40 if you ask me, just spend the money on Steam.
